biggest scalp Wed, 25 June 2008 21:18
Now the discussion is on ratings again, I would like to launch a special competition. The competition is about the biggest scalp.

Here are the rules:

- You need to win a game (1 point).
- In that game, your opponent should severely curse at you. You should post the cursing here (1-3 points, to be voted for by other participants). A screenshot proof gives you 2 bonus points.
- You are not allowed to verbally trigger the cursing (VERY important! but if he/she starts, you may feed him - without cursing yourself!)
- Your opponent needs to have a significant rating (1400-1500 = 1 point, 1500-1600 = 2 points, 1600-1700 = 3 points, 1700+ = impossible)
- If your opponent gets so frustrated he leaves the game, you get 2 points.
- Big victories may have some relevance too: if you win by 40-80 points, you get 1 point, with more than 80 points difference you get 2 points. Bonus point if your opponent ends in minus!

Have fun! Any comments on the scoring?

Re:biggest scalp Wed, 25 June 2008 21:29
I will start with a real life example to clarify things.

I played a Big Cities game against fleche (1566). I had Mon-Dal, Dul-Dal, SSM-Mia. After the starting phase I had 6 red, 6 purple, and 5 black and he had Pit-NY and Nash-Atl. He took 5 blue and 6 black and I blocked LR from four sides. The conversation had started with my "hi, have fun!" Then it was quiet for a few minutes and then it came (not an exact transcript, but it comes close):

f: du [bip]
b: sorry, it was biped away. Can you repeat that please?
f: tu [bip]
b: ai, that missed me again. You could use spaces, then I can read what you're saying.
f: This is the last game between us!
b: why? I am enjoying myself.
f: vas te faire foutre

then I walked out of the room to get viewers to see the spectacle but when I got back, the poor chap had left. After two minutes of waiting, I somehow figured he had enough and finished the game to a 112-56 score.

Now the points are as follows: 1 point for the victory, ? points for the cursing, 2 points for his rating, 2 points for him leaving the game, 1 point for the point difference. It would have given me two extra points yet for the screenshot, but I think 6 plus 1-3 is not bad.

Any others?

I like it - nice idea Bassie.

I agree that there has to be a minimum cut-off (1400+?), plus no deliberately joining "fair play only games", etc.

What about special four player rules? Presumably no deliberate playing together, but here the potential for people to get annoyed is SO much greater Twisted Evil Perhaps you should get bonus points if you set up a double block and the completer of the block gets cursed Laughing

Sorry to spoil your fun before it starts, but this is an obvious violation of our Terms of Use policy.

"You shall not upload to, distribute through, or otherwise publish through an Days of Wonder website any content which is libelous, defamatory, obscene, pornographic, threatening, invasive of privacy or publicity rights, abusive, illegal, or otherwise objectionable that would constitute or encourage a criminal offense, violate the rights of any party, or that would otherwise give rise to liability or violate any law."

Cursing or coercing others to curse is abusive and objectionable, so please do not do this. We really do not like taking away playing privileges.

If you really want to swear at people buy the new XBOX Live version
which has microphone voice support and you can curse at each other all you want.

Thanks,

Dear Mark,

As I was posting this, I did not realise I was violating the Terms of Use of Days of Wonder. I think I can say I treat all other players with respect. But if anyone wishes to curse me because of some futile game maneuvers, I can't keep myself from making fun of this funny behaviour. Besides, in my posting I carefully avoided the occasional non-competitive player who doesn't know any better and I did not make the cursing any worse than it was.

On top of this, I have no interest whatsoever to curse at any opponent. So if you allow me to do a suggestion, please direct your words at my opponent, who was the only one who cursed.

All this said, if you think this violates your Terms of Use, I will obey to your directive. I never meant, past, present or future, to interfere with the intentions of Days of Wonder, which I very much appreciate and respect. I will therefore neither post to this thread any further nor will I encourage others to do so. I apologise for any inconvenience this may have caused. I trust this settles the issue.

Kind regards,

Bas

Bassie,

Thanks for the response. Sorry, it was not originally clear to me, until I just re-read it, what prompted your original post. And of course others might also not realize it either, which is why I felt the need to step in. If you knew how many complaints we receive about online behavior you'd understand why we are sensitive to this issue.

fleche is a joke, his "specialty" is Big Cities which is the second most blocking map, next to Swiss, that there is. My only game with him he cursed me and left as the blocking crushed him 96 - 35. After that he would leave whenever I entered his games. Some #1 Big Cities player. It'll be nice when those rankings become more than just who plays the most, as it is a very fun variation.

IMHO I cant bear players who complain after been blocked (its a strategy the same as to connect towns). I was blocked so many times but I took it like a better challenge..
One time (I dont remember the name anymore) I blocked one player (europe map, not one of my favourite) and he started to insult me in a heavy way... for every insult I received I always answered with Laughing
I made him crazy.... we went on in this way till he abandoned the game

Laughing

hail hail blocking

Blocking is the main cause of upset, but not the only one. Please lets not forget these other evils...I have had players object to me putting too many long tracks (this behaviour even had a technical name which I can't now remember; no it wasn't "skill"), finishing too quickly (I mean how unfair is that?!), ticket fiending, not ticket fiending (in Swiss), and of course just being too lucky (the favourite complaint with "tops" Laughing)

Hi all,

i can offer a win vs a 1600+ player (Wuschel 33), he left after saying i was playing too slow, i guess the minus 30 ticket points were the real problem (ok i made 2 dots in that game). The point gap was more than 60 points. Unfortunately he didnt curse me, which cost me the points for that disciplin. (or can we say, calling ME slow is as good as a curse?)

So its only 1+3+2+1 makes it 7 points.

"content which is defamatory, obscene, pornographic, threatening, invasive of privacy or publicity rights, abusive, illegal, or otherwise objectionable that would constitute or encourage a criminal offense."

So, exactly which term does this thread fall under? No one's being defamed, unless the statement is false. No one's privacy is being violated. There's nothing obscene, pornographic, or threatening here, and no criminal activity is being encouraged. What exactly does "otherwise objectionable" mean? Objectionable to whom? Personally, I find it highly "objectionable" when I title my game, "Blocking ok," and then someone joins and complains about my blocking. Why don't people lose their playing privileges for doing this?

Hi,

No smileys from me in this post I am afraid.

This thread is, frankly, objectionable. When the community reaches a point in which the senior members (WhiteTrain, 145 postings) start publically attempting to humiliate the junior members (Wuschel, 0 postings) then we have reached a very sad state of affairs.

WhiteTrain may well be (angry/bemused/insert emotion here) that Wuschel left the game. Wuschel may well have an alternative point of view about events that makes perfect sense of what occurred. We are unlikely to hear it here however. Why not? Wuschel is obviously not someone that posts in the forums.

Wuschel is, however, someone that obviously enjoys TTR. Just look at the number of games. Someone that has also obviously been enjoying it for quite some time. One incident, the merits of which are really quite irrelevant, is not sufficient for a public denunciation. Please don't post any more of these incidents unless the player has a history of poor behaviour.

I think Bas made it quite clear that this thread was not meant to be developed any further, so the very least anyone wishing to 'continue' it or something very much like it, should do, is open a thread of their own .....

I wonder where the humiliation is ?????? I just wrote down what happened. And how will you develope a history of bad behaviour if noone starts to post it here. Shall i play him again and wait if he does it again? Or shall i watch all the other games of him?

What begging are you referring to Ace? Have you been begging for games again? Laughing Laughing Laughing

And just so you know Ace, there is NO difference in the amount of points you get whether you win by 1 or if you win by 101 and your opponent has negative points.

A win is a win is a win. That is all. Doesn't matter by how much. You would think you might know that by now or at least try to figure it out before posting and saying something completely wrong.

Lastly this thread has nothing to do with how much you beat someone by so the fact that you posted your win here was baffling to begin with. Perhaps you should read the begINNING of the post again? Laughing Laughing

gotta love ya Ace. You crack me up sometimes.

Baron
