Hello Memoir '44 fans,

This is Jesse Rasmussen (rasmussen81), writing from school while my 3rd grade students are in the middle of D.E.A.R. time (Drop Everything And Read). I wanted to write and let you know that my Memoir '44 History Club students have been workin on creating a scenario.

We studied some information about Hurtgen Forest and then met with a US Veteran by the name of Tom Myers who faught in Hurtgen. We wrote a historical background together and then the 4th Grade students (9-10 years old) designed their own scenarios! Smile

I made some suggestions about how to make the battle more historical and about how to balance the sides, but the product they created is completely their own. One student, Francisco, was able to edit his scenario and the final version is online at the Jewell History Club User Page. Very Happy Other students will make their scenarios public as they are finished...

If you play any of these scenarios, please take time to write an AAR and maybe give the battle a rating, but be gentle since they're young and this is their first try. Razz

Thanks for looking. Below is a link to our blog and our user page.

I believe all of these battles will only require the base game to play. I'll make sure students see any AAR's you guys post on their scenarios and I know that even just a few ratings or AAR's will mean the world to them because it'll mean someone other than me played their battle!

Thanks for all the support and encouragement I've had with this club. Very Happy I'll let everyone know when other scenarios are available to play!

I already set up the battle for tomorrow, and an AAR shall come and a rating. Be patient! Smile

The background talks about "the dreaded Germans". I guess part of teaching history is the lesson that "some of the good guys were bad and some of the bad guys were good"?

Memoir '44 could spark some interesting discussions in your class!

Very true, and we've talked about how the German people weren't (and aren't) bad simply because some of them did terrible things. It might be good to have that conversation again. But in a way, the term "the dreaded Germans" would apply to any German soldier...from the point of view of an Allied trooper. They dreaded running into any of them! Laughing

Hi Rasmussen81 and Francisco and all of Jewell History Club.

I played Francisco`s scenario twice yesterday. One time as allies and once as axis.

I greatly enjoyed the scenario. Good work Francisco!

This scenario gives both player some challenges as to how to use the available units and terrain.

The axis player must chose how to use the tank units. In this scenario I would say the range of movement and firepower from range are key thinks for the axis player. Going to close to the allied units with the tank makes in vulnerable. The tank units also has to attack units in the open, because terrain reduction is heavy in forrest.
In both my games the axis used the tanks alot and they were the deciesive part of the german forces.
I don`t know how the battle would have looked if tanks were used little or eliminated early.

The allied player is the underdog in this scenario. They have to keep a constant look out for tank units and use terrain as best they can. Eliminating or weakening the tank units is key for the allied player. By weakening the tank units it can make the axis player think twice about using them.

Any Memoir player that would like to show they can play this game should give this scenario as shot as the allied player.
It is definately possible to win as allied, but it is a struggle.

In both of my games the Axis player had good right section cards at the start and the allied unit in Schmidt was an easy medal. I don`t know how much damage that unit could have done if the axis had poor or mediocre right section cards.

I like the fact that this scenario isn`t totally balanced, but if you want more balance maybe giving the allied player one more card or take away one for the axis could do something?

So I would say this scenario was a good scenario.

Thumbs up to Francisco! Thumbs Up

To Jesse: You obviously do a good job with this history club!
Be proud of what you and they have accomplished!

Thanks for that great note, ad79! I'll make sure to pass it on to Francisco and the other kids on Tuesday when we meet again. Very Happy

We've run into a little snag with the other students completing their scenarios because of the system change. I'll have to re-teach the kids this new program and install it on a bunch of computers, which I don't know if I can do yet. But my goal is to have all of the scenarios up and available by the middle of next week.

Have a great Friday everyone (or I hope you had a good Friday, depending on what time zone you're in) and have a wonderful Easter!

Hi everyone,

Jesse (rasmussen81) Rasmussen here. The Jewell Memoir '44 History Club is over. We still have a month of school left but students have sports they want to participate in and I have yard work I have to do. We'll start back up again next year but we're finished for now.

A few more students finished their Hurtgen Forest scenarios and they are now uploaded on our User Page. I can't guarantee a balanced scenario but I know that the students would be thrilled if you took time to play one of their battles.

Enjoy and thanks for all the support this year!

I plan on playing at least one of the Hurtgen Forest scenarios next weekend at a convention that I'm going to. I thought the con was this weekend, but alas, no, I must wait one more week. I'll let you know.

Wow, a student scenario will see table time at a Convention?! Surprised

Be warned...this is their first scenario ever designed. They're 10 years old and it was play tested once. The advice from their friends on improvements, may or may not have been taken. In short, these might won't be very polished scenarios.

But if you still want to use one of them for the convention, more power to you! Cool Enjoy.

If you were wondering where I got the cool new Profile picture for the History Club, my brother-in-law made it! Cool

We're trying to come up with a good design that looks similar but will work for me. I'm stuck trying to find a center icon that I like... Rolling Eyes

No problem Rass, I'll probably play at least one, if not more, of them with my best friend before the con. I'm printing out these scenarios now. I may try them solo first. I have a lot of alone time since I'm disabled. So I play solo games until a friend comes over that plays M44.
