TTR - championships? Tue, 22 September 2009 17:31
I often see players who are grouped into teams. (AT, TIC etc.) Do you guys play championships or something or how does this work out?

Dear Michaa...

If you go to Ticket to Ride discussions and there T2R Competitive Play table you can read all about different kind of competitions around TTR.

But the answer is yes. People play for World Championsships (SPWC), National Cup (NC) and in several other tournaments.

I'd like to say 'thank you' for this great event ... but ...

Austria not included either - may we play in Germany?

I'd like to know ...
How were the countries where Championships are held determined?
Obviously not number of online players, online tournament players or the like.
Is it maybe just an issue of finding somebody to organize the event? In that case let me know, I may be able to help or find somebody who can.

Why is participation restricted to residents of the respective country?
I consider it strange that people who aren't lucky enough to live in the 'right' country are simply excluded.
The idea of a World Championship is that everyone can take part.
Otherwise it's not a World Championship but a German-Polish-American-Spanish-French-Benelux Championship.

Best regards from Vienna, a little town in the Alps, with approx 2 mio inhabitants probably to small to host a TTR event Rolling Eyes

We structured the Championships around the same concept as World Championships in sports - that participating countries would identify and honor a National Champion who would then represent that country in the World Championships. In such a format it would not make sense for someone in Switzerland or Austria to represent Germany.

For this first year of the championships we were not able to conduct a National Championship in each country that we would like to - primarily because of the amount of planning and local partnerships that are needed to prepare and organize them. Unfortunately this will leave some good players on the sidelines, but in future years we plan on expanding the National Championships to include additional countries.

In addition, we hope to be able to organize online tournaments (with prizes!) that won't have these country-based restrictions.

Stay tuned!

For countries that we could not cover this time around, it's never too early to get started planning for next year (assuming this coming year's Championship is a wild success Very Happy).

If you think you and/or some friends or game associations you know would be well set-up to help us organize a National championship in your own Country, please contact MarkoPolo or Adrien via private messages.

Neat idea.

Is there much possibility you might add a North American tournament (the qualifying round it seems) in the Midwest? I'm from the St. Louis County, Missouri, but a tournament in Chicago would be nice and reasonably accessible for me. I realize you already have 5 tournaments scheduled across North America, but it's a big place. It seems you have 7 tournaments in Germany - much smaller than the US+Canada.

Also, while it probably wouldn't help me much, given my location, a US tournament in the New York City area would also seem like a good idea.

Love the idea, but for us in the US to show up at a National site is extremely difficult, these other countries are the size of our states, so an online entry would be really nice.

Maybe next year a GenCon event would be possible for the Midwest.

Is the qualifying tournament (in Los Angeles) multi-player or head to head? The final round says head to head, but the qualifying and semi-final rounds don't specify. -

Tournament Format:

Qualifying Round of 3 games that will include both Ticket to Ride and Ticket to Ride Europe - at end of Qualifying Round, players will be ranked and the top 8 to 12 players (depends on number of entries) qualify for Semi-finals.

Semi-final Round: 2 games of 1910 variant. Top 2 players qualify for Finals.

Final Round: 2 Finalists play head-to-head, best 2 out of 3 on original Ticket to Ride to determine winner

......Benelux...

So if a dutchie wins, he is then the Champ from the Benelux??

Why can't then Germany, Austria and Switzerland also have a combined Championship?

Not happy with this structure at all. Find it not fair to say the least.

And why Poland and not Austria or Switzerland, there are many more players from these countries.

Well yes Jac and others, I agree,

if BeNeLux is combined why not Germany-Austria-Switzerland and maybe Spain-Portugal and others. There should be somehow a possibility for everybody to participate.

If not then why call it "T2R World Championship"?
How would somebody feel after becoming "World Champion" knowing that so many great players were not even allowed to try to qualify.

Online Tournaments would really give the possibility that everybody could take part.

And I am saying this even though there will be one tournament just around the corner from where I live.

I went through several messages and sites but did not find a clear answer this far.

Is it possible to participate World Championships also from Finland some how?

Or are these rules made just to keep us out from the competition because Finland probably is the best TTR country in World (in relation to population that is)? Smile

Well main problem is that your reasoning lacks logic;

Canada and USA is not a country, its the major part of North America. So If you equal North America with a country then europe is a country

Be-ne-lux is not a country. it was a trade union in 1944 much like EU is today. So if you consider benelux a country then EU is a country

So you can either change the rules that says that this is a competition between countries or let it be open competitions in different countries, like US Open

This is obviously not a tournament to find the best TTR player in the world. We already try to do that online with our tournaments (and I highly doubt there is some player sitting out there that doesn't play online that is better than any of the top 20 online players).

So this is really just an advertising gimmick. A pretty cool one, but there is no real reason to make it completely fair, rather just enough to make it seem "fair".

I think there is arrogance in this statement that would turn me off about playing online if I'd never tried it. To me saying that there are no better players in the world than the ones who play online would be like saying there are no better soccer players in the world than the ones who are in the English Premier League. Preposterous!

Re:TTR - championships? Wed, 23 September 2009 14:35
Maybe it sounds arrogant, but I see a valid background for Drake's statement.

a) if somebody plays the board game well (and therefore frequently) he will problably notice the web code in the box and there's a high probability that he'll try it - so most of the talented board gamers show up here sooner or later

b) the more games you play, the better you are (normally). As an online game can be played in 10 minutes, whereas a board game takes a lot more, we can assume that online players have played more games, thus having more experience

c) the more different opponents you play (and the better these opponents are) the better you are (normally).
Sad but true ... Austrian soccer players wanting to improve their level of play do change to the English Premier League or the like because they simply don't have the same level of skilled opponents at home.
Chances are high, that the variety of playing styles and skills you meet online is not available at home or at local game clubs.

Exceptions are certainly there, and somewhere there will be some very talented players who have never played online.
But for the majority I guess the statement holds true.

I went to a game club in my area that touted TtR as their favorite game. So I went once and I massacred them in multi and I hate multi. Then in 2 player I did one of my favorites, showed them my tix and still blew them out. I tried explaining why they shouldn't keep drawing tickets all to blank stares. Never went back and this is what I would expect at most of these events.

Re:TTR - championships? Wed, 23 September 2009 19:39
We understand the disappointment of players living in countries currently not represented in the tournament. But please keep in mind that:

- this is the 1st time we're even attempting an event on this scale; as such we have voluntarily kept it small (ie limited to the countries we announced). Once we have proven we can run things smoothly, we will look at expanding this to additional countries.

- the selection of countries was not based on the number of online players for that country (this is an off-line tournament, not an online one anyway), but rather on variety of practical criteria such as our own footprint and presence in these countries, capacity to run things there, level of involvement of our distributors (which is why there is a slot for Benelux - we have a single distributor for that region), etc...

- we all agree that online tournaments are a good idea. If/when we run some, they will be open to players from all around the world in as much as we can (ie we will still have to abide by local legal restrictions, such as age limit, etc... if any of course).

But for now our focus must remain squarely on making this first Championship a success. Thank you for your understanding.

.........then have at least the decency to call it a

Benelux - US - ............... Championship

cause WE BELONG also to the world.

And just possibly you could/should have asked some of the top players here (i.e. Dea who offers) for help, and ADVICE in running such a tournament. Cause some of these people have a vast experience with such tournaments, what you certainly seem to lack.

Hey,

well I think at first we have to say a big thx to DOW for organizing this event. I think its not really common to promote a game in that way with these efforts after it was published before five years.
I think this announcement is a positive sign for all online (and offline) players that there will be further events, improvenments etc. . Our beloved game will be live on and we can look forward to many other interesting news.

But, and here I have to agree totally with dea, Jac etc., it is really not a world championsship if only seven countries/regions have the chance to qualify. I can totally understand that it would be too much efforts to organize a national championship in every country, particularly because it is the first time you are doing this (with TTR), but there should be at least one chance for each player to qualify for the world championsship. Maybe you should think about the possibility to organise at least one online tournament for all "rest-of-the-world"-players Razz . The winner of this tournament would be the "online representative".

Again, thx DOW for organising this event(s).

I love this idea! It's a mix between the personal face-to-face aspect of what DoW wants with their tournament, and the inclusion of all online. The winner could get an expense paid trip to the finals along with the other national champions. My guess is at least 200 players would participate online for such a prize, and if done right a real winner would emerge. There's even a built in seeding system (ELO). Smile How about it Dow?

True. Those who can make a regional in person will still go because their chances are better in person than online. But at least by including an online presence, DoW could truly call it a 'world championship' without reservation.

I too think this is an ingenious idea Chris. DOW, I really think you should consider this option, excluding any player who has the opportunity to join a local in person tournament. Thus, allowing any country outside of the 7 chosen countries to participate, making it truly a world championship.

Plus, I am sure if you asked for some help with organization, there are several, if not hundreds of people who might be willing to help put this together. Then, you have less work to organize something, but you are also creating a true World Championship, excluding no one.

This is truly an idea that has plenty of time to materialize, and plenty of interested individuals. I believe I would be excluded being from the US, making me have to find a way to travel to Denver (being my closest location and same time zone). Though it would be much more convenient for me to play online, although the competition may be much more fierce.

I would highly suggest trying to make this happen. You have the man power, you have the location already decided (online, worldwide), you have several interested individuals, get it done!
Plus, there are many that can make it easier for DoW if you just ask for help.
