I've had M44 for a few weeks and have been using Vassal for some computer solitaire play, but I haven't seen much activity on the Vassal server. I'd be interested if you want to give it a try.

Sure, be game. Hopefully others will follow suit. Might be sometime next week though, unless you want to play late in the night (Mountain time here).

where do you get the vassal mod for this game? I was on Vassal.org, but never saw a memoir44 module.

Thanks for the heads up on this.

I will be checking it out and while I realise there are lots of American players in different time zones, if there are any UK / European players interested I would be up for playing M44 online once I have worked out how to use Vassel.

Cheers

I mean the message board inside the Vassal engine. It's not a web forum. Once you start Vassal, load the M44 module, click on "Show server controls", then click "Connect" and "Check messages". I posted a couple of messages.
(Strangely on the first the sender is missing, but it's me).

By the way I'm from Italy, so Holien we can arrange an European game.

Of course I will be happy to play with American players too, just we should find a convenient time. Very Happy

@ Holien

I would be in. But I also have to get used to the interface first...it's a bit fiddly. Really looking forward to the official Memoir '44 - Online. Very Happy

Also, would be nice if any of our "French" speaking M44 players could do a small little tutorial in English for Vassal. Did run the pages through BabelFish, but I think something is getting lost in translation.

Caboose,

What do you need translation help from French? The vassal module is available in English and vassal itself is an English language based program. Once the module is completed, the game play is pretty intuitive.

Yes, scenarios have been completed at this French website:

http://www.jeuxdeguerre.com/index.php?p=11&t=35&id=1 6

but the M44 scenarios can be created from scratch in just a couple of minutes and saved.

I've been too busy the last week to play online, but I'm still interested in playing, even late Chicago time to match your Rocky Mountain Time.

Please note that you can play games on Vassal via email. This eliminates that time differential when playing from different countries, etc. When it's your turn, you open a log (from the FILE menu), make all your moves and combats., and then end the log when you are finished. You send that log file as an attachment to your opponent. Your opponent opens the log file and steps through it. It shows every move, dice roll, online comment, etc. Your opponent does the log thing and sends it back to you.

Please don't ask if it's easy to cheat.

By the way, there's a problem with the terrain counters. I noticed the problem when I put together a scenario and then saved it. When I opened it to play, some of the counters (sandbags, markers, bridges) ended up under the terrain pieces so they were not visible.

The workaround is to pay attention to the actual printed scenario map. A second solution would be to fix the module. But everyone would have to run the same module version, and I don't know who did it originally or if it's maintained. I think being a maintainer would be another one of those thankless tasks.

I think the fellow who did the initial module can be reached via PM on BGG.

Hmmmm

I have downloaded Vassal and the M44 pack but can not seem to get it to work.

I have downloaded Java and get the Vassal window but can't get the module loaded as it does not have a Vassal extension also can not get into any of the other games.

I am surely doing something wrong but have yet to work out what...

Well Mark, I can't get any scenario to load ever, so obviously something is wrong.

Also I noticed on the french site they have version 1.3
where as on BGG , it is version 1.2. Anyone know what the difference in version is?

I think the french version has some cards with text translated in french and some added images.

You can see them if you unzip the module and look at the gifs.
Although to use the mod you dont have to unzip it but only let it have the extension .mod as far as I have understood until now.
Basically, after you download the file, you have only to rename it.

Furthermore, when you load the french module appears a message log " - Memoir 44 version 1.2.0 " so I believe the core is the same.

See my previous post, did you unzipped the module?
Just rename it, to have the extension .mod
so you can find it when you push the button "Play module".
As soon as you get into the game, read my msg and send me an e-mail, we can setup a game! Smile

Caboose,

I'm surprised you're having difficulty loading scenarios.

First, after you start Vassal, you play the module:

memoir44[1].1.2.0

which can be downloaded from boardgamegeek.

This is a zipped file, but you can run it directly from vassal without having to unzip. After that loads you can load a scenario or start a new one.

Are you playing this module?

I play this module without having to rename it with the .mod extension. Memoir44[1].1.2.0 appears in the play module window without this extension.

Hi That was the bit of the jigsaw I needed. I unzipped the file and had three items from the zip.

The images and Info and Buildfile. I tried renaming that to a .Mod extension with no joy.

Just clicking on the Zip from the Vassal software did the trick.

More on this on Thursday night.

Razz

Just need to work out how to load up a scenario?

You don't really "load" a scenario, you "build" one. You go to File and select New Game. When it asks you to pick a side, you should pick "Observer." Don't pick the Axis or Allied side now; I'll explain later.

Then pick the map you want and use the terrain and piece windows to put all of the terrain hexes, markers, units, etc., where they belong on the map. Once you're done, shuffle the cards and save the game. The cards don't automatically shuffle.

The next time you play, you can load the scenario you built from the File menu. Since you set up the scenario as an Observer, every time you load it, you will be asked to pick a side. If you had set up the scenario as a particular side (Axis or Allied), it would assume you always wanted to play that side. There doesn't seem to be a way to change sides after that.

I guess I should say I don't have a lot of experience with this; I'm just starting, too. But I was attracted by the whole thing and spent some time playing around seeing how it works best. I ended up doing two other games (Carcassone and Trias...two tile games) and that taught me a lot.

But I could be wrong about the whole thing.
