Vassal players? Fri, 01 April 2005 19:14
I'm looking for folks interested in playing M44 via the internet using the Vassal module posted at the BoardGameGeek site. You can email me at lazarus_wfbjr[nospam]yahoo.com (replacing the [nospam] with an @ symbol, of course) to arrange a game.

You will have to download the current version of Vassal from www.vassalengine.org, as well as the M44 module from the files on the M44 page at www.boardgamegeek.com in order to play.

I'm on the Vassal server right now looking for a game. If it shows me away from the keyboard, just send me a wake-up and I will return.

I tried to post this yesterday but it never appeared, so I'll try again today.

My brother and I have spent significant time updating (and we hope improving) the original Vassal mod that appeared on BGG. Eric says we can tell people about it.

The map and units are from the original post. We scanned and improved the cards, added a few features to make play be email better, took out what we thought were confusing things, etc.

If your are interested, you can check it out at http://www.hilinski.net/vassal/m44/Memoir44.Ver_3.2.a.mod . Our original version had a "chart" button that included a player aid that was at BGG. However, that aid was on a webpage that sported the copyright emblem, so I did not include it in this version. It would be easy enough to do that yourself if you so desired. If you download the mod, please check the HELP | QUICKSTART menu for some basic information.

Hi,

I'm looking for a player for a VASSAL-match tonight (about 19:00 Central European Time).

If someone's interested please drop me a message.

BTW, I think the new version has vastly improved over the previous ones. Great work! Kudos to the authors!

So long

I am posting the version with the chart included. It occurred to me that the chart was taken from DOW graphics in the first place.

Please download http://www.hilinski.net/vassal/m44/Memoir44.Ver_3.2.mod . There is also the Arracourt scenario posted there at http://www.hilinski.net/vassal/m44/Arracourt .

See the quickstart in the Help tab when you run the mod for an explanation of how things work.

By the way, the game will work well as a play-by-email game as well as online eface-to-eface. When my brother and I play eface, we are both on 56k modems, and the response is acceptable. With play-by-email, you record a logfile at the beginning of each of your turns, close the log when you are done and then email that log as an attachment to your opponent. Your opponent loads your log and steps through it one "frame" at a time until your move is completed. Then he/she does another log file and sends that to you.

One "rule" needs to be in place for the Ambush card, however. When the ambush card is played, the players ignore any attacks that may still remain in the log. The Ambushing player interrupts the opponent's log, plays the card, does his attack, and then the opponent must complete his original turn anew from that point.

Re:Vassal players? Mon, 11 April 2005 00:20
chilinski,

I have played your M44 Vassal module and it's very nice. I do have one suggestion for a tweak. Since a player's turn ends with the drawing of a new Command Card, I think their should be a message displayed that says when this occurs.

We have posted the Vassal module for Memoir 44 on the Vassal site. http://www.vassalengine.org. It is also at boardgamegeek. Therefore, I am removing the link on my own server, since I don't want to have to update multiple locations in the future.

The suggestion on drawing a card is noted for a future update when we come upon fixes/improvements.

Bilben and I had two games last night (my first real opponent as well). It was great fun.

I think that DoW had better start upgrading their servers now, becouse if the official online version is half as fun as this one, it is going to generate a lot of traffic.

Anybody keen on a game look for me online.
Cheers

Re:Vassal players? Mon, 18 April 2005 23:23
The 3.3 mod we uploaded contains 22 scenarios ready-made plus blank beach and inland boards to make your own. "Bilben" (Bill Bennett) may be adding more scenarios, which for now will show up as standalone saved games. Just load them as games and play away.

If the card-zooming is annoying you (it did me), do this:
pull down file/edit_preferences and click on "general". Then check the last option "Use CTRL-space to view stack details." This will disable the zooming, but you can still see a zoomed image if you select it and hit control-space.

If you want to play by email, here's how it works. In general, you save a log when you do your turn. You send the log file to your opponent. He loads the log as a saved game, steps through it with the step button, and then creates his own log, which he emails to you, etc.

A log file is a snapshot of the current game state, and then it appends each move you make. When you load a log, it loads that game in its current state, and each time you hit "step", you see each move your opponent made.

To begin a log, pull down "file" and create it. Usually we name them with an incrementing numbers such as "Toulon_05.log." (The file name extension is NOT important.) Don't forget to turn on the log! If you are logging, it will say so in the window title. When done, it's a good idea to write "done" in the chat window. Then pull down "file" and close logging. Send the file as an attachment to your opponent. When you load a log, you repeatedly hit the step button, which is on the left side of the toolbar, until it greys out or you see a "done" message from your opponent.

You can play a PBEM game from two locations (work and home), but it's very important to use the same password in both locations. The password is key to unlocking the game as one side or the other. The username is meaningless except for ingame messages.

One more thing I forgot to add.

If you visit the vassal site and the Memoir 44 page, you might want to add yourself as a player. It might be a good way to find opponents, and you can also email the list members to see if they can and want to play.

Re:Vassal players? Mon, 18 April 2005 23:55
Hi shilinski,

Thanks for V3.3 and the tip about the card zooming.

Is there any way to invert the board for the axis player?

It is not a show stopper, but after playing several games as the Axis I find it difficult, whilst contemplating a tricky situation, to remember to mentaly transpose the cards. It is easy to build a plan for the left flank only to realise that you have to play the cards on your right flank.

I have had the game for 5 months and only played 6 times, three of them on your MOD.

Thanks again

Cheers

There is no way to rotate the board as far as I know. That's why an "R" and "L" are printed on the boards sides -- to help players remember which flank is which.

Stan and I looked at this when we started working on the mod. There is an option to make maps reversible. However, that option only appears when you do a New Game and select the base map (inland or beach). If you pick an orientation, it stays that way through the remainder of the game. You cannot change it on the fly.
