In my experience the elves are very powerful as they can't be killed. Am I in error about this?

The elves can be very powerful, it's true! The benefit is that you always have the same number of tokens, but you can still get stretched too thin. At a certain point you will get more points by letting them go into decline and choosing another race. Razz

I'm not a big fan of the elves. Sure they never die but they have a harder time conquering territories.
I prefer races and abilities that let you get more coins.

The abilities that let you conquer areas more easily or give you more coins for conquering certain areas or just starting with a ton of race tokens. All these abilities in my opinion are better then the elves never dying.

Unless of coarse the elves get paired with one of these kinds of special powers but that doesn't happen too often in the games I've played. If it did I'm sure all the other players would gang up on the elf guy.

I enjoy the elves, like I enjoy most of the races, but only when they are the right race to take. I find that elves are pretty lackluster as a starting race. They are slow out of the gate and have the potential to look better than they are, leading to some big point blowouts. However, I love the elves as a second & third race, something that I'm looking to preserve points with. If I have a strong in-decline race, like the Priestesses or the Trolls, elves are a great race to defend with.

But CarriCommander has a valid point as well, points in this game matter far more than longevity. And while the elves have a lot of longevity, it can be difficult for them to amass large numbers of points.

I would agree with you. In the game that I was talking about, the Elves were not my first race.

I don't know pillaging elves out of the gate are just wrong. I was in a game that a buddy pulled that first turn and stayed with the the rest of the game and won. Mostly because if there was a race near him he attacked it, and he made sure there was.

The other players should hound down powerful combos.
Your buddy would have had even more fun with pillaging Skeletons.
"Temporary alliances" have their use.

It seems to me that the dwarves and elves tokens should be switched. Dwarves should get 6, which makes them equal to other races. Elves should be few in number, but are mostly immortal, which would put them more in balance.

I especially like some of the Tales & Legends cards which seem designed to be "elf-killers", such as Rats!, which disables racial powers, and "Handle with Care", where conquered regions lose 1 additional token.

That would make Dwarves way too overpowered. I've always been of the opinion that 4 armies is the right number for the Dwarves.

As other people pointed out, Elves are good as a second or third race that you take to the end as long as you have a defensive in-decline race. Elves are terrible at getting a lot of points or defending territories, so as a starting race or a second race without a strong in-decline race, they aren't effective.

Also, Elves are better with more players, because the chances of you being attacked multiple time increases, and that is when Elves actually use their power.

Personally, I really don't like Elves. I want to go into decline but the Elves keep speaking to me: "No! We can keep going!" and i say "Dang it, why can't you just die like a normal race so I feel compelled to decline you?" Hahaha, but that's just my personal quirk.

Many people consider that the Dwarves are underpowered.

Indeed, Elves can last indefinitely on the gameboard and conquer other races as they please, but that doesn't make them extremely powerful. If you're not scoring many coins in the process, you're not going to do very well. This is true regarding any seemingly powerful race, special power, or combo. In Small World knowing when to pick a race or send it into decline is often much more important than how powerful it is.
