Yes i have also bought into the deal at christmas for the last 3 years and am holding off on a number DoW purchases, waiting for the christmas deal again.

Today i received the mail of the holiday gift and i can say only one thing: i'm very disappointed.
I bought every 3 last years Days of Wonder games by this promo and i was always very happy, but this year i buy nothing.
I think that the gift of Ticket to Ride Steam will not be appreciated by most.
I repeat, i'm very disappointed!
Days of Wonder this year failed!

Did you see that they also released a free book of scenarios for Memoir '44? Maybe that is more to your liking?

Of course nobody will force you to play online, but I would point out that many (maybe even most) of the people who play Ticket to Ride Online still play or started out playing the tabletop version. Just because you don't like it doesn't mean other people won't like it!
But I have to agree that it's a free gift...and even if I didn't like it I wouldn't be calling it a fail!!

Don't get me wrong Giacomo I understand your point of view and disappointment. I think that the economical crisis must have something to do with it, hence the shift towards dematerialised content so that they still could offer some of their clients a gift.
The only thing that made me jump was the word failed 
Let's also praise their charity gesture.

The MarshallUK, I had the same question but since it's basically license I assumed I can just gift it. And I did. I don't know if the folks I gifted it to have set it up yet but if they have trouble setting it up i'll let you know.

If you gift the Steam code to someone else, then (s)he just has to create a Steam account (it's free) and enter the code to play the online game.
If he already has a Steam account, it's even easier - (s)he just has to enter the code in his/her Steam account to play.

Yesterday evening i went to club and discuss about this year Christmas gift of Days of wonder and all, and i repeat all, my friends of the club agreed with me that this year they don't buy nothing from Days of wonder, because the gift of digital account don't like them.
In my opinion (and i'm a marketing specialist), the choice of this year will reduce the sales compared to the same period of last year. This is the reason because i wrote fail.

Thanks for the information.
Well I figure if DoW are gifting games to charity, maybe that coupled with the knowledge that my friends son will get hours of pleasure out of the steam ticket to ride app will be gift enough for me. This may sound cheesey and god knows I am not Rockafella! The board games I have recieved in christmas offers in the past have been a great boost to the pressie pile, at a time of year when money is at its tightest. I guess maybe this year thinking about kids who are worse off than mine will give me a warm glow and and yuletide joy Merry Christmas everyone
