The Russians started off well, with some strong dice throwing up either flank, whittling down the Axis units to singe figures, whilst gaining a few medals at the same time.

The Axis held their nerve and kept advancing, with the score set at 2-2 the Russinas called for air power, and found a few targets ... 4-2

The Axis kept their relentless pressure up, especially down the flanks, and the use of an Armor assault down either side was successfull ... balance was redressed ... 4-4

An Air Power card for the Russians merely brushed away a few figures, but was fortunately followed up with a Recon 1 on the same section, gaining a few medals ... 6-6

The final prize was in sight for the Allies, in the shape of a few weakened, isolated German infantry units on the Axis leftflank ....

But not before a disastrous throw for the Axis on their SECOND TFH card .... 4 flags and a tank I believe ...

A Russian Infantry Assault pushed the Allies ever closer toward the Axis infantry, again, met with more stubborn resistance.

A few turns later Artimon played a vital Infantry Assault card of his own, mustering his worried looking troops, looking to pull a surprise and gain the 2 medals he needed for victory ... it was a long shot,, and he needed to commit his two single figure units to try and bring the battle to a close ....

In only collecting one medal, he hoped that the Commissar had not anticipated such strong resistance, however a Move Out command resulted in a great finale as the Russians took out the two single units to win 8-7

It was a dramatic finish ... soldiers fighting in the fields, it felt like hand to hand combat,the men desperate for their lives, I was reminded of the scene in Saving Private Ryan (different location I KNOW) when the final fight by the bridge reached desperate measures and soldiers were resorting to throwing their helmets at each other in a bid to survive ... this was how it felt for me as the bid for the winning medal took on epic responsibility ... those two points for the Allies are precious right now!

Well, these battles are turning out to be epic. Great description JayKay! You ought to write a history book! I'll pat myself on the back and say this scenario plays out strategically different each time. I can write 'em but I can't play 'em. I'm 0-2 so far. I thought I had John on my right flank but a banzai charge with a single armor unit wiped out a full armor unit and reduced another to 1(48% hit rate on armor overall). That was basically it for me. There was no attack left to generate, just counterpunch and hope for the best. He played defensively when he had to, and offensively when necessary. Well played John!

I'm working very hard to make the upcoming scenarios as interesting as possible. So far it seems to be working out well. I have a few I've not finalized and would need some of you (from both sides) to play to put the finishing touches on. Let me know by P.M. when you might be online over the next couple of days. We have a few weeks as our next one, Stalingrad, has been completed. Thanks.

An epic struggle, lasting 35 turns ... 1 hour and 15 minutes. Most of the battle took place on the German Left and Center.

My side's mobility was limited by a shortage of good movement cards for my Center and Right sections. However, when the Russians finally came up my Left flank, I was well prepared for them. Within a few turns, two encroaching armors and an encroaching infantry had been eliminated, and another infantry went scurrying back to the Russian camp. This was the part of the fray where three German infantry units fell, as well, but the HQ was saved.

Two other casualties were a Russian tank and infantry that had taken up positions in a small forest in the middle of the map.

The Germans finally won the day with an Armor Assault that eliminated a tank in the middle and an infantry in the woods on my right.

The German war effort was aided by above average dice, while the Russian rolls were approximately average.

Well done S1812, the Evil AXIS capture a pt and now it is 9-5, but still chances to close the gap further in the coming battles, ALLIES 2 pt victory still out there!!

SAC Helcat, to quote Jeronimon, commiserations!! 35 turns, 3 Airstrikes for S1812 and none for you, plus he had a very good draw of cards the entire game, you did well to get 3 medals. Your ART let you down early and often and never really zeroed in on their targets. Add to that S1812's patience and well the results tell the story.

Only Round 2 of 10 and will glady follow you for the remaining 8 rounds until will get those EVIL AXIS TROOPS! Very Happy

After my oh so close and disappointing loss in the last round Evil or Very Mad , I am pleased to announce to my comrades that I have delivered another point to the Russian side for this round Very Happy

The report.....


In the early going I got the first kill-a center infantry which was hit 3 times and fell back off its hill only to be done in by a long range arty shot. But then I lost a tank on my left as it was blasted off the hills with but 4d-ouch!! I then started an advance on my right and halved one of the infantry there which fell back with a flag. I also moved up my Combat Eng into the woods.

A German 2-2-2 then started a march on my left while the German left 2 fig infantry fell back to the center baseline to get away from my forward tanks while the panzer rolled forward and opened fire-getting a hit on my armor. In my turn I split my MOVE OUT orders to attack on my left and right with not much to show for it. I had AMBUSH in hand but whiffed on a 3 fig Elite Inf that had moved behind the hills attack my 2 fig infantry which was wiped out. My other two left hill infantry were then attacked by the Combat Eng infantry and an Elite Infantry all ordered by INF ASSAULT.

I played my own INF ASSAULT and had to do so on my left which only ordered 2 units but they take out an Elite Inf and the game is tied 2 to 2. A German three attack CLOSE ASSAULT wipes out one of my left infantry and gets 2 hits on another. My right Combat Eng is also hit twice. I then play my CENTER ASSAULT and order 5 units. I shift my center hill Combat eng into my left and it along with my arty take out a 3 fig Elite inf near my baseline. One of my tanks moves onto the hill and makes a huge kill on a 2 fig panzer on the opposite hill.

The Germans continue the attack on my left but with only 2 infantry. They take out my last hill infantry and damage my Combat Eng. My left Combat Eng finishes off a sandbag infantry and one of my center tanks gets 2 hits on a Combat Eng on the hills on my left. I have ARMOR ASSAULT under the chip and hope to have 4 tanks to order in my next turn. With the score 5 to 4 in my favor the best the Germans can do is hit my left-center forces with a RECON AIR POWER and get 2 hits on the three targets.

My 4 tank ARMOR ASSUALT goes in although one tank just parks in the left woods to be in reserve just in case. One tank fails to kill off the 2 fig Combat Eng on the hill. I was counting on that kill. But my right tanks do better-one moves onto a 2 mine with no damage while another moves next to a 2 fig panzer. I kill the panzer and my OR attack also does the same to a center baseline 2 fig infantry and my lead goes to 7 to 5. I also have a 2 fig tank next to the HQ hex and a LEFT ASSAULT under the chip-I also had BEL but figured the HQ may be occupied by the last of the German left units-an Elite Inf hiding in the woods.

My left tank in the open is blasted off the map with 5d but my right units are untouched and my 2 fig tank rolls into the HQ hex for the win.

Well, my opponent really had me on the ropes on my left in short order and if not for two timely card draws-CENTER ASSAULT and ARMOR ASSAULT-I may very well have been badly defeated here with the elimiation of my left forces and the exiting of a few German units.

Only three of the panzers ever saw action while my tanks played a major role even though they suffered from a German hit rate against them of 62% (with 13 shots) to my 35% on 17 dice-ouch!!

Total shots 63 (44%) to 53 (49%) in my favor while the Infantry rolls were pretty even-46(48%) to 39(46%) in my favor.

Personally, I'm living in an alternate reality where we slaughtered you guys in every battle, so I'm laughing at your reports from Pravda, which have been reprinted above. But yes, Artimon was our 2-point player in this round, and I am confident that's all he allowed you to score against him.

We will let you have an extra unit in the next round, so you won't feel so disadvantaged after such terrible losses.

I just wanted to say that if the 2 point player loses, the oppponents only get 1 point, not 2. You have to win the 2 point game to get 2 points.

Tank Commander, congrats on your victory over JJ ' Nauts, to both a well fought battle.

Looks like it was a case for your Right flank knowing what his Right flank was doing! You were able to hold off his assault, he ran low on cards, you developed your own assault, you reached HQ, he wasn't able to exit, game over well done!

9-8, AXIS, a Lucky91 victory and 9-9 ALL and we are back to RED SQUARE 1! Very Happy

Job well done to the ALLIED victors this round and to the AXIS for the stiff battles.

Congrats to Dugrim and the AXIS, for the win and maintaining the lead, 10-8, going into the 3rd round, SN Rattenkreig, a long battle from the looks of it!

Lucky91, some unfortunate misses when you might have been able to swing things your way and perhaps stall his advance, in the end, too big a dice advantage for Dugrim, 96-74, somewhere in that range, having to fire on the same units a few times before you killed them were shots you could have used elsewhere.

On the plus side, SAC Helcat and I welcome you to our 0-2 club! We will have to change that next round and not make it such an exclusive club!! You're welcome to join us on our side Looney!

Well played Dugrim, a brave effort Lucky 91.

If my counting is still correct, the Allies have won this round 6-3. Meaning that we have made a great comeback from our first defeat. (With your general still not quite on track (-;))

Using some elementary calculus, the overall score is now:

Allies 1; Axis 1

Victory points:

Allies 8 - Axis 10

Still to be confirmed offcourse by the organiser of the tournament.


@Team Allies: I thought Stalinggrad North Rattenkrieg would be the next scenario and we are entitled to place a infantry unit of any type at the bottom row of the battlefield. If you have any suggestions what and where to place, preferably argumented, you can post them in the tread

@Gonzalan: We will be there when we are most needed.

Round 2 has some strange result :

The Allies gained 5 victories with an average of 6,5 medals, but the Axis gained only 3 victories with an average of 6,9 medals.

Just a thought ...

Congratulations to Dugrim on his glorious victory! The difference between the Russians getting an extra artillery and an extra infantry in the next battle is huge. His name has been put in for the Knight's Cross of the Iron Cross.

Indeed, to the bitter end we will be there and who knows, maybe we each go 8-0 from here and it starts at SN Rattenkreig!

As to the INFANTRY, just a matter for which flank might need the extra support and hope the avoid those dreaded STARS! Must be on the baseline....ENGINEERS come to mind extra dice since they ignore terrain restrictions an urban battle?

I have to say I am glad that our esteemed Dugrim managed to get his point, because an extra artillery would have messed up the dynamic of Rattenkrieg very much, in my humble opinion. An extra infantry is just another way for us to score a medal.

My thoughts regarding the extra infantry:

1. I agree with gonzalan that it should be an Engineer unit, for the reason he mentioned.
2. I would place it on our right flank, between the tank and the SF infantry, for the following reasons--
a. Placing it anywhere in the center makes a nice long row of 5 (if we place it toward the right) or 6 (if we place it toward the left) units, spanning either the Right flank/Center or Left Flank Center--susceptible not only to regular Air Power Attacks, but Recon 1 cards as well (as Blitz rules are in effect)
b. I think that the right flank needs more help. The rules for the Tractor Works, Red October Factory and Barrikady Factory all state that ANY unit that occupies one of the hexes gets a medal (it appears that it does not have to be the majority). Of the 3 complexes, the vacant hex that is most exposed to the Axis advance is on our right.

I would agree with this placement suggestion, and also that the unit should be an Engineer unit.

@Team Allies: I thought Stalinggrad North Rattenkrieg would be the next scenario and we are entitled to place a infantry unit of any type at the bottom row of the battlefield. If you have any suggestions what and where to place, preferably argumented, you can post them in the tread

Yes, we had a very good round Smile but I look forward to pounding the Axis in a later round like they did to our side in Rd 1 Laughing . But for that extra panzer we may very well have done better in Rd 2 Rolling Eyes. Now we get the extra unit and while I would have liked the guns better I am sure we shall make good use of the ground pounders. Go team Red Cool

JAParker 11-12 clorofila (35-38 figures), 41 turns, 55 minutes
(yes, that exciting!)

Allies Hit Rate: 45% [49% vs inf, 40% vs arm], 77 rolls.
Axis Hit Rate: 45% (48% vs inf; 42% vs arm, 38% vs arty), 84 rolls.

This was a very tough game and, as sometimes happens, just a few turns before the end of the game I thought I wouldn't have a chance: by turn 38, John played a TFH and reduced an armor and an engineer to 1 figure each; score was then 10-8 for the allies, who had very few wounded units. I retreated both units and went banzai with a full-health special infantry, keeping an eye on the BEL card that I had from quite early in the game. The banzai move worked (luck number 1) and I destroyed John's last armor (10-9). The turn after, John had a Armor Assault (so make that luck number 1 a luck number 2 as well) and since his last armor was gone, he selected his last arty to put an end to my 1-fig Engineer: 11-9. With an exposed infantry, 2 one-fig units and 2 two-fig units on the board, I had no other choice but to use the BEL against his artillery, followed by occupation of Barrikady Faktory (aiming for total of 3 medals): «4 dice plus a frozen river behind it, maybe this goes well». It did, and the frozen river was not necessary, since I got 2 grenades (luck number 3).

Very intense fighting and victory could have went either side. Thank you for the great games, John!

Just one final question: am I wrong or Air Power was replaced by a second Artillery Bombard card or something? I played 4 games over this scenario and I don't remember an Air Power card coming up. It is possible that the card was there, but the odds are against it, hence my question.

Good game for both players. Congrats to Clorofila.


But I have one question. If I understand the scenario correctly the allies start with 5 medals. In the replay I saw only 3. And they were from the wrong side.
Were there only 3 and was there an error with the replay? Or has the scenario been changed?

Eric can you clarify that?

The allies did start with 5 medals. I guess that the battle replay feature does not handle so well with Eric's objective medals for both sides.

Andre and JA,

Great game! Can't get any closer than that.

The rules are using a standard deck. Air Power is available but just didn't come up in your games.

The replay function is weird when it comes to objective medals. Even during replays it might not show some objective medals when they are earned. I don't know why it doesn't show them, but as Andre stated, they are on the Allies side when the game starts.

I do not think that it has to do with Eric's scenario or rules. I have noticed that when an objective awards more than one medal (such as the two medals for Ponyri, for instance, or--in the case of this scenario--the Red October and Barakady factories--) the replay will only show one. That is why the Allies appear to start with only 3 medals instead of 5 in this scenario. I did start with 5 for the objectives and kept them throughout--unfortunately (for me--fortunately for him!) André eventually got 2 for the Barrakday factory and thereby won the game.

It was a hard fought game against a very worthy opponent who made the most of his opportunities. I enjoyed it very much--although I would have enjoyed it just a little more if I had won! Congratulations to André.

Congratulations, clorofila, on that beautiful win! May it be the first of many for us in this round!

As for Air Power, I can reconfirm LooneyLlama's response. I have held Air Power in this scenario.

And JAParker's answer about medals, of course, is correct, too. The replay function shows one medal per objective, no matter how many medals that objective is actually worth. I believe this bug was reported long ago, with respect to Ponyri and Red Barricades Factory.
