When you are using another player's route with your Train Station, do you have to use cards and your plastic train cars to fill in the route? That is, do you have to put your plastic cars parallel to the owner's or do you get to use the route totally for free?

You get to use the route for free. The station is often used because you don't have the option of building your own route.
