Really suits 8 year children? Tue, 16 July 2013 14:22
Hello,

After watching the Will Wheaton TableTop videoshow on YouTube, he was able to allure our atenttion into this game.

My question is if this game really suits children of 8. As a backgroung, they easily can play Memoir'44 and Ticket to Ride.

Thanks

The rules are really easy to pick up, however you can play the game in two ways:
Aggressive, this I wouldn't recommend it is IMO wayyy more fun but can make small kids feel really depressed as they have no chance
Passively, I would recommend this for young kids as they get to develop higher scores and can attack as much as they want. However as they get older they will find more aggressive games more exciting, but that's just my view Smile

Probably depends on the 8 year-old in question.
I've been playing SW with my now 9 year-old sister since she was 7. She was able to grasp the basic rules immediately without any problem. Did she understand the nuances of all the race/special powers and their combos? No, but neither do many long-time players. Despite having never won a game, SW is still one of her favorite board games (she also loves Ticket to Ride and Settlers of Catan, both of which she wins regularly).
That's my experience; however, I also know 20 year-olds who can't grasp the rules of SW. Age is probably not the most telling factor when it comes to readiness for Small World.

You may, definitely. LOL

Funny that. Seriously, both answers given are good ones. I just wanted to add that generally publishers list the low-end ages at 8, then 10, then 12 for their games.
If the game is not specifically a child's game, here's what that rating should tell you...
8 years > An 8 year old should be able to play this with adults, assuming they are patient and helpful, and (as was suggested above) not overly aggressive. Also, an advanced 6 or 7 year old should do as well. Children 10 years old should be able to play this without adults after they have been taught the game. Children 12 and up should be able to learn & play this on their own. This is a family game.
10 years > A 10 year old should be able to play this with adults, assuming they are patient and helpful, and (as was suggested above) not overly aggressive. Also, an advanced 8 or 9 year old should do as well. Children 12 years old should be able to play this without adults after they have been taught the game. Teens & adults should be able to learn & play this on their own. This is a game older kids will like to play--even without their parents--and could maybe beat them fair & square.
12 years > A 12 year old should be able to play this with adults, assuming they are patient and helpful, and (as was suggested above) not overly aggressive. Also, an advanced 10 or 11 year old should do about as well. Teens should be able to play this without adults after they have been taught the game. Usually only adults or sharp teens will be able to learn & play this on their own. This is essentially a game for adult thinkers.

IMO Small World falls into the "10 and up" category, but I have played it many times with surprisingly sharp 6 year-olds, and with a few pointers they do fine against the other kids.

I hope this has been helpful.

Almilcar, welcome to the foreign soil of this Small World forum!! It's good to see you over here. Very Happy

If your kids like Memoir '44, I think they will like Small World as well. It has a much lighter, sillier feel to it, but still has a lot of strategy as they try and figure out how to use the race they picked.

I've taught Small World to my niece and nephew (12 and 7, respectively) and they both love the game! My nephew hasn't figured out the best way to win yet, but he has a great time playing nonetheless.

I highly recommend this game since it's my second favorite game of all time (next to Memoir '44 of course). Cool
