Shipping September 30th Mon, 23 September 2013 22:28
Well we are 5 days away from the launching of this game. As a pre orderer I am very excited and will be watching my mailbox diligently. Also I made a space on my game shelf. How excited is everybody else?

My order is still on hold Sad

But I am really excited too. I am hoping it arrives before my planned game night on Oct. 11th. I think my gamer friends are going to love it!

Also, I should mention that I have read the rules about 5 times and am already devising some strategies/tactics I want to try. I'll be nice and share:

1. Get my 3rd level Ivory temple tile as early as possible so I can reap the rewards all game long

2. Get all three toolbox tokens in play as early as possible (use 1st progression of shovel branch)

3. Store up progress level 3 of Compass and Shovel. On one turn pop the Compass after you complete a 5+ Pathway. One a subsequent turn, pop Shovel during a relic run on that long Pathway.

4. Or if #3 isn't going well, scoop up a bunch of toad relics and use Machete level 3 as often as possible Smile

I know there are plenty of other good combos for maximizing VP, but I want to try these first. Also of note, I don't feel the 1st Level Ivory Temples are all balanced. My comments on them:

#1: Max of 9 VP, but most likely to only be 6VP as you will probably have spent your 2nd Level Ivory tile

#2: Max of 10 VP, but since you may not be able to predict the end of the game, your last turn will most likely have to be going to base camp to resupply instead of doing other actions to earn VP

#3: This one seems OP to me. The Max depends on the # of players, but let's say in a 5 player game, one player collects all 8 toads and 2 of something else, then they get 7x5 + 5 or 40 VP. It goes well with my strategy #4 to focus on toads. Even just 3 of them =10 VP and once you have them, you don't care when the game ends.

#4: Max of 10 VP. Another nice one as it goes well with strategy 3 and once you have all 10 out, you don't care when the game ends.

#5: Max 12. Easy one, I plan to always have all 3 Toolboxes in play.

#6: VP is variable. It depends what you can do on that last turn (Maybe a big relic run and pop Shovel #3 Smile

Alrighty Naga02 as you requested here is my feedback on your strategy ideas.

1. Yes this can help but no ivory temples are good enough to make it worthy prioritizing them, also some of the levels of ivory temples are one time use.

2. Having two toolboxes in play was always pleanty for me, I never used my 3rd. I found myself using the build a pathway power or move two pathways more then anything else. One player did manage to max out both the score double point and the score points on your longest road, they then hit a nice relic run, added the points from the road then dropped a bomb on us by doubling his score for the turn. This was a game changer but essentially he spent so much time progressing his toolboxes he didn't do much else in the game.

3. I think you get an idea how this would work from my previous example.

4. If all you can get are toads then definitely do this.

I will say the strategy I noticed that emerged in my group of friends in a 4 player game was building toads from the ruins as fast as possible since the roads are a a necessary but limited resource. Once the ruins are depleted your only hope of getting more is the level 2 toolbox and that is expensive. Build roads first and worry about rearranging them later. Moving multiple roads and then executing a relic run is a good way to surprise your opponents. Going for purple temples is rather a waste of time since all levels are relatively the same rewards, stick with blue and lots of roads, massive relic runs will get you all the points you need.

Hope this helped you figure out a good strategy, let me know if you have questions.

Hi Graham,

My game arrived yesterday and I played a 3 player game last night. Some things I learned or wished I did better:

1. I agree that exploring temples early is not nearly as useful as exploring ruins. I wish I had placed more pathways early on, especially near the base camp and on water trails.

2. I also agree that three toolboxes are not really needed unless you do have a lot of water pathways. I did get 3, but never had all 3 on the progression table.

3. I learned that running out of rations with no quick route back to base camp really sucks.

Similar to your game, the player that won ours was able to pop a longest path with 6 pathways and do a double VP on a big relic run on a later turn. She actually played my strategy #3 better than I did, which is why she won.

I think I will try the toad strategy next time I play and make sure to have several pathways near Toolbox tokens so I can keep progression up.

Also, I wanted to see if you are in agreement with a scenario that came up:

A player with no rations does a move past a face-up toolbox token. They have one tool box at the bottom of the progression and finish their move on a temple. The player moved his toolbox up to the first level Machete branch, then used that toolbox to allow them to explore the temple with no ration cost.

The rules say you can use a toolbox anytime between actions, so this would be between the move and explore actions, so I am pretty sure it is legal, but wanted to see if that came up in your game at all.

Yes that is how I was playing the game regarding the toolboxes.
