Small World 2 - not possible to play with buddies AND bots? Sun, 15 December 2013 21:25
Hello,

I'm more than a little disappointed of the digital version of Small World 2. Ticket to Ride offered playing online games with buddies *and* AI opponents in the same game, SM2 doesn't.

In addition it also doesn't seem possible to add random online players to a game. Or rather, the whole concept of "game rooms" like they exist in Ticket to Ride seems to have been thrown out of the window, sadly. Why the heck is that?

Anyway, I'd like to know whether I can expect these features to be added anytime soon. If not I'd like a refund - my use case with these type of games is simply that I play with one (yes, one) person regularly and we usually add two bots.

Near as I can figure out by reading between the lines, DoW seems to consider TTR as a competitive skill game, while SW is meant to be a casual only for fun affair. I got most of that impression from how there is a competitive play forum for TTR, but not one for SW. So while they feel competitive rankings with strangers makes sense in TTR, they seem to think it's not in the spirit of the game for SW.

Either that or their opinion of ranked matches with random people changed between putting out TTR and SW2. Either way they feel that quick play is for a fun only, no stress game and playing with opponents you choose is where the competitive play should be done. It's completely backwards to me, and I have no clue why they did it right on TTR, but changed it for SW2.

Would just like to say I agree completely. They set the rankings up to be less competitive. If anything, I'm more competitive when playing with strangers and I'm more than likely just trying to have fun when I'm playing with friends. Also as a side note, I have played a lot of TTR, and a decent amount of small world though not near as much. I find small world to be a much more competitive game. With TTR, i felt like at a certain point a player could max his strategy (not much of a way to have played the game any better) especially with this base game, though the expansions worked on helping this. Small world clearly does not work like that, there are TONS of different winning strategies and it just overall seems more competitive because of that.

This level of competitive feeling you have for Small World might be EXACTLY why DoW decided to make the competitive system linked with Buddies!

If you are more likely to be competitive with strangers, people might also be more likely to be rude or get hurt feelings. Like you pointed out, SW is much more aggressive than TTR. In TTR there are plenty of angry people because of Blocking in the "fair" games (let's not get into that discussion) but imagine the frustration of when people target each other!

There could be accusations of "King Making" or "Picking on me" or being "Mean"! So far there haven't been any, but I believe that part of the reason for that is because Quick games aren't ranked, so people aren't as invested. And the Ranked games are usually against someone you know (even if you only know their name) and it removes some of the frustration.

Actually, I think it's a brilliant move on the part of DoW. Cool

You make some good points. I guess the most frustrating part is not being able to get a ranked game going whenever one pleases. Rudeness surely comes with ranked random matches, and the only ways I can think to avoid that are a system like this or not having chat, but that is something most games have just put up with. The disadvantages of this system would be possibly exploiting the rankings much easier, no guarantee of being able to get a ranked game going, and losing that competitive random aspect that comes with pick up games and can be a lot of fun. The advantages would be exactly what you said, which admittedly are things I appreciate, but I think I would still prefer a traditional ranking system

It's understandable that in the end you would prefer what you're used to. There are other players who feel the same as you...

I'm sometimes amazed at how intense the TTR forums get with people accusing each other of cheating, being elite, being rude, or being more aggressive than someone wants. I'm impressed that none of that has happened yet over in the Small World forums and I think some of it is due to this system of Ranked play.

Playing a Ranked game doesn't mean you're actually playing against your friends...it simply means that you've added them to your buddy list or they added you. Rarely do I get to play with people I actually know face to face...so even though it isn't totally random, it's also not just your friends who will boost your score on purpose. Cool
