I do think the Russian right has no other choice than to hunker down and suffer the slings and arrows.... I would not recommend moving from from that cover and sandbags you mentioned earlier except under the most unusual or favorable conditions.

Also, I do not believe that that anyone stated the Russians could not win. That IS always a possibility with any scenario.

Now much more important than strategy:
When is the next overlord on Vassal?

How does January 12 or January 19 look for everybody?

If we could play one in January, what scenario would the People like to play?

(By the way, if I'm coordinating, I think we're looking at January 25 or 26.)

John, you are probably right on your assessment of 67-33. I was thinking of 65-35 myself as well.

I still believe that the main weakness of the Russians is not the superiority in material of the Germans, but the fact that the russian troops are so spread out while the German troops are nicely grouped to attack each defensive position one at a time.

So regrouping russians is the thing to do. Maybe even retreat some of those most forward defensive positions.

I also think that your evaluation of the Russian right/German left is somewhat clouded by the game we played. In those 2 sections, germans have only 1 tank unit, one elite infantry unit, 2 artillery out in the open and a bunch of regular infantry.
But in our game, the russians lost their artillery in that section immediately, and all the strong German armour moved from the centre to that flank on turns one and three.

When Zalamance spoke to me on turn one, he told me: I have very few cards for you, so I moved my armour to the flank. If he would have told me that he had plenty of cards for me, I would have kept them in the centre and the situation on your flank would have been very different.

Here an example of a possible first turn for the Allies (where each FG gets a probe). Of course, this doesn't take into account what the Axis has done on his first turn:
http://i40.tinypic.com/2lav6kh.png
I think this already improves the Allied position somewhat.

By the way, I would be avaiable to play on:

Jan 12
Jan 26

But not on Jan 19 or 25

January 25 is no option for me. 26 can do. If you can't coördinate on the 12 or the 19, does it mean you can't play either?
Because I could set it up, welcome players, give tutorials an half an hour in advance, …
You'll just need to give me a quick tutorial on log files etc … (what's the use, how to do them, …)

As to what scenario? A fun one.
I saw that the 4 scenarios of the battle maps that are not out of print are not in Vassal. Is it because they are classified and we are not allowed to put them in Vassal? Because there are some fun ones in those.
Else: I just sent you my last creation. I tested it and it was very very tense. (15-14), and a lot of fun (plenty of combat cards because of an optional house rule that you also get one if you took initiative)

Edit: here is the map of the scenario. If you look more closely to sections 3-4-5, you'll recognise it.

I looked online and didn't save their names, but I was looking at Overlords by composers I recognized, mostly with multiple reviews and AARs, and mostly with 3 stars.

Hi Guys,

I could play any of those days mentioned earlier.

I see that Quit2 also has a Stalingrad Overlord scenario. I think it looks good. I don't know if he know this but Sam selected mine to be played at the World Board game championships. It was very intense and went down to the wire, though I don't know if I want to play it again. I played it often with my sons.

I do have one already posted online, 'Crossing the Volturno Line'. I am in the final testing stages of another, 'Operation Queen and Clipper'. Both of these involve the overall commander utilizing off the board reinforcements. This wrinkle really can change the outcome of the game and the commander is forced to decide not only what cards to deploy but who gets the reinforcements. A lot of pressure on him. Also, the opposing commander has to be aware of a counterattack at any time. It really is a fun special rule.

I also have Tarawa and Iwo Jima for those who want a beach overlord.

I'd prefer playing an official scenario. Currently I'm off on Sundays and am available early Saturdays.

I bought:
-Rats in a Factory (40% Allies with Urban Cards) &
-Capture of Tobruk, (41% Allies) but haven't played them yet.

I enjoyed playing:
-Rzhev OL (40% Allies) (variant using Winter Cards) and
-Peleliu Landings (45% Allies).

Last year we played some OL, and I wouldn't mind switching sides for:
High Stakes at Bruyères (50% of 12 AARs) and
Offensive on Saint-Ló (54% Allies of 19 AARs)

The SFTF OL I'd like to play some more is:
-Klisura Pass with Italian High Command versus Greek's Big Gun. All 3 games ended 12-11 VPs.

At 4.5 hours a go, Overlord isn't something to do every weekend.

Any of those you propose are fine with me.
And I agree that every week is too much. But once a month?
And if that's too much for certain players, I'm sure we can find enough candidates to make it a rotating group of players where some people sit out from time to time.

Actually a great idea. A monthly OL event. Perhaps a list of interested players (with days & times listed of when they can game) can be posted.

As for me, currently work Sunday-Thursday and will going into the coming year at work, usually work 10am-6pm on Sunday, could get in some game time on Sunday or just adjust my schedule, they are rather flexible with that and go in later.

Think the last one was done by 11:30 or so...usually the other 4 days at work my hours are 12pm-8pm...so wouldn't be a big change....

Either way...will join when I can and go from there.

I could play once per month in the winter. I think Tank Commander's idea of having a potential list of players is a good one. Most Sunday mornings EST is good for me.

I also don't mind using an official scenario, if that's what everyone wants. However, My wish list would be one where there are some of the newer units, especially from the equipment pack, and all sections will see action.

I am usually avaiable every other weekend with Sunday being the best day for me (although Sat would work too) with the current eastern 9am start.

A list for:

Jan -- 11th / 12th / 25th / 26th

Feb -- 1st / 2nd / 8th / 9th / 22nd / 23rd

Mar -- 8th / 9th / 22nd / 23rd

Another idea.

To better insure all players see more action , perhaps splitting up the players into two different games might be better? In spite of the scenario choosen there is no guarantee that a flank will not be inactive for a good deal of the game.

I was thinking of 2 players per side (with 1 player taking both flanks and the other the CinC and being the center FG. So a total of 4 players per OL game (2 per side). This might also quicken the pace of the games a bit too. I may be way off base on this but I thought I would throw it out there.

I've got some good news and some less good news.

Good news first. I got a proper internet connection for Christmas this year, so unstable internet will no longer be of any concern regardless of weekend.

BUT, next month my military service will start (lasts approximately 6, 9, or 12 months) and the Finnish Defence Force will decide whether I have leave on weekends or not. The only thing I know for certain is that on January 11/12 I won't be able to play.

Henceforth we shall be known as the Brotherhood of the Overlords. Although it might be wise to know what our favorite color is before we set out.

Count me in for the Brotherhood of the Overlords. It was so much fun playing with you guys last time. My sons have some friends coming over tonight and we're going to play a new Overlord that I wrote. I very rarely get to play with 8 players. Most of these boys are in college and home for the holidays. I got them hooked on Memoir some time ago. The scenario is 'Push to the Ruer'. I haven't posted it yet, but will soon. I am honored that you are considering one of my scenarios to play. Thanks.

Just wanted to update you on my Overlord battle last night. This is a scenario that you haven't seen yet; 'Push to the Roer'. Since I have so many other scenarios out there now I am going to wait before making it available to all.

Anyway, this is a scenario where there are reinforcements for both sides. If the Allies use theirs, the Axis gain a medal. Hobart's Funnies, flame thrower tanks, Tigers, mobile artillery, turn start objectives, and numerous other units come into play. All of these units were used in the real battle.

The Axis started strong with a Barrage kill of a baseline artillery unit and a good use of a Medic and Mechanic card.
The Allies slowly inched forward but had a hard time initially capturing any objectives. The Germans started to bring on reinforcements on turn four. Bad dice limited their effect. The Allies decided to use theirs also so gave up a medal in return. Objectives were fought over again and again. The Axis looked like they were taking the upper hand until an armor assault by the Allies eliminated a Tiger and on the overrun rolled 2 grenades to kill off a mobile artillery. Still the Axis had a chance but couldn't eliminate a single figure armor unit with the score 16-15. On the next turn the Allies got lucky and after eliminating a 2 figure inf. unit on their right flank, eliminated a 3 figure infantry unit in a town with only 3 dice, 2 of them by a flame thrower tank. Final score 17-16 Allies.

I plan on posting this scenario sometime in January.

No, no, no, Jeroen, you misunderstood Sam, it was not "praise" he said or heaped, said I was going through a "phase" and just happen to be winning!!

I know for certain I am not twice the player as Kellogs_10 or JayKay2010, beat them twice, maybe 1/2 the player Buidheo is since we split and think it was Van Voort for the other win, not his equal either.

Yes, it was somewhere, believe in was on the battlefields known as Lucky Land!! LOL!

Hope it continues in my next 2 matches.

Re:Let's Play OVERLORD -- Sunday, December 15, on Vassal! Tchepovitchi Station Sun, 19 January 2014 01:34
January 26th is in one week.

We should definitely get the names down of those people wanting to play on that date.

And what scenario will we play? If everyone can give the name of one or a few of the scenarios he wants to play, we can see what gets most votes.

Suggested scenarios:
- Peleliu Landings Overlord - 1
- Offensive on Saint-Lô - 1
- Rzhev Overlord - 1

I'll edit this post as the names come in.

Count me in, and we should start a separate thread for each game.

And I'll suggest Crossing the Volturno Line, by LooneyLlama, for either this one or a future one.

I'll make a new thread.
And in any case, I will keep the chosen scenarios from this time for future times. Kind of making a list of maps to come.
