Re:Open tournament Mon, 27 June 2005 02:18
I am extending the deadline on round 2 matches to 12:00am Wednesday 29/6/2005, LA time. I have been told of at least two games which are scheduled to be played between now and then, and I think there's one or two more that will need to be completed as well.

Also, a few results:
1: grolapinos defeated redPEPPER
2: léachris defeated nico06
6: Torsten defeated Lexion

I have been unable to confirm the result of the match between Beshop and DarkAngel1000/Spieler67204. I cannot even find a player by either of the names "DarkAngel1000" or "Spieler67204" to send a PM. It is likely that she has changed her name. Does anybody know what DarkAngel is calling herself now, or of any other way to contact her?

hello tjandjahall,
When you informed that I had to play Darkangel ou Spieler67204; I made some researches to send her the invitation for the game and I recorded her in my contacts. Yesterday evening when we met before the game this person was named Lucky07 ~ T-Online and then she changed name again as Darkangel1000 for the game. I asked her to confirm the result, she said you have won so that you have to confirm. That's all I can tell you.

Some more confirmed results from round 2:

4. Jac_ defeated Optimus
5. Beshop defeated DarkAngel 1000
8. LotusArdent defeated Vegas

The story concerning game 5 is, DarkAngel has changed her name to Lucky07 ("Lucky07 ~ T-Online" to be precise), and the name change appears retroactively in the histories, so when I look at Beshop's history, I don't see any games against DarkAngel 1000. I see Lucky07 instead. (This despite the history Beshop posted.) Now that I know the current name, confirmation is not a problem. Thanks to those who have given me information about this.

For future tournaments, it may be best to require that players leave their names alone for the duration of the tournament.

Nooooooooooooooo!!! Optimus!!!

Jac, you evil woman, you knew it was my dream to meet this guy in the Open Tournament Final! D.I.S. gets his revenge on the "masked engineer". But now you totally destroyed it by defeating Optimus before me! Sad

Now what will become of this tournament? Confused

I'm very sorry, but Jac was soo lucky in these games Wink. No, I'm just kidding! She played excellent!!!

The results:

1st game:

Optimus 128 Razz picture
Jac_ 120

Jac had Vancouver-Montreal and SSM-Nashville. I had Portland-Nashville and SF-Atlanta.
Very close game. I won 'cause I had better tickets (more points).

2nd game:

Optimus 90 picture
Jac_ 104 Razz

Jac's Tickets: Calgary-Salt Lake and Vancouver-Santa Fe. Optimus': Helena-LA and Chicago-New Orleans.
This was the best game in the series. Unfortunately I couldn't manage to keep her out of Santa Fe. In the final round I knew I'd lose by 3 pts so I decided to draw tickets, but I had no luck.

3rd game:

Optimus 80 picture
Jac_ 123 Razz

I had the same lousy tickets as in the 2nd game Mad . Jac had Portland-Poenix and Portland-Nashville.
I built almost the same track as before. But I couldn't block Jac so I drew tickets twice Embarassed : Denver-ElPaso and Duluth-Houston during the game, Seattle-LA in the final round. Didn't help at all Sad .

4th game:

Optimus 106 picture
Jac_ 112 Razz

I had Vancouver-Montreal and Calgary-Phoenix. Jac had Denver-Pittsburgh and SSM-Nashville.
Jac blocked me very good in the middle of the map. I was too busy to finish my tickets so I couldn't build a nice track. Jac won by having longest route (and her playing skills of course Wink)

Thanks, Jac, for the very exciting games. Good luck in the following rounds and the final Wink.

Second Round Result - D.I.S. vs. Rode Katers Wed, 29 June 2005 19:09
Here are the results for the Second Round:

Match 1
Peter de Zeeuw defeats Rode Katers (131-115)
Match 2
Rode Katers defeats Peter de Zeeuw (127-46)
Match 3
Peter de Zeeuw defeats Rode Katers (104-101)
Match 4
Peter de Zeeuw ties against Rode Katers (123-123)
Match 5
Peter de Zeeuw defeats Rode Katers (118-110)

My Second Round match against fellow-Dutchie, Rode Katers. And it was good. I was very driven because that loudmouth 'I'm-so-afraid-I-won't-get-attention-so-I'll-just-keep-my-ca pslock-on' Jac was pushing my buttons before and after every match. But no hard feelings to her. She wants me. She's just still in denial about it.

But apart from the over-enthusiastic "fans", Rode Katers played great. To tell the truth... I played not so great. I didn't went for the longest route, I was greedy for points, but... I was also one very lucky bastard. Grin

First match was a clear victory. Rode Katers didn't know what hit him. Second match I was greedy and kept 3 tickets. Stupid. Completed none. Third one was close, but I won despite my retarded route. Match 4 was made in heaven... or hell, however you see it. It was railroad combat as Alan R. Moon would've liked to see it. And a terrible tie in every way. Great! Finally I defeated Rode Katers in match 5 because I was the one with the better cards (LA-Miami and LA-Chicago).

I'm still thinking about forging an alliance with him and Bassie and call it either The Red Cat Fraction or Dutch Threat. So guys, if you're interested. Smile

Anyway, I would like to dedicate this victory to my sweet cat Rambo, who passed away due to diabetes last year May the 14th. You will always be my number one.

Falke and I played our 2nd round matches today.

I beat Falke 3-1

Falke - thaddäus

100 - 131
125 - 70
93 - 131
(117 - 117) we decided to replay that game
76 - 106

Please don't ask for further information, I can't remember anything. Only that I had to fight very hard to win the games.
Thanks Falke for the games.

My apologies for the delay in getting the next round ready for play. A few hours after playing a couple of games myself I was taken horribly ill, and so I have been out of action for a little while. Ever heard the term "blinding headache"? I can now assure you that it can be literal, for I had peripheral vision only for an hour or two that night. Anyway, I'm all better now.

The players have posted their own results, so I'll go straight on to the draw.

Round 3 Draw
1. grolapinos vs léachris
2. thaddäus vs jac_
3. beshop vs torsten
4. Peter de Zeeuw vs lotusardent

It has previously been stated that the last three rounds of this tournament will have a week to be played. Thus, I will set the deadline as 12:00am Thursday 7/7/2005, LA time - that means you need your games finished Wednesday night, not Thursday night, BTW. As I post this, it would be the night of Wednesday 29/6/2005 in LA.

Of course, if you all finish earlier, you get to play the next round earlier too. Smile

Sorry to hear of your sickness, hope you feel better!
Just to let you know, that it was thaddäus who won against Falke.
You should have gotten the confirmation from Falke.

Hope you feel better!

If you press Alt-PrintScreen instead of just PrintScreen, you should capture an image of the current window instead of the entire screen - well, that's true for the NT code base. I imagine it works under 95/98/Me too. We probably don't need to know about your Office apps habit. Way too many instances of Word running there... Smile

And by the way, according to full TTR rules, I believe Rode beat you there. In the case of tied points, the player who has completed the most tickets wins. (If that is also tied, the player who has the Longest Track wins.) The online version doesn't check the tie-breakers.

I still haven't heard any arguments for or against using the full tie-break rules for online tournaments, in case anyone cares to weigh in on that subject.

Really? Confused
I believe you are right there indeed...
But if this is the case, and you are responsible for the development of this tournament, what do you want me and Rode Katers to do? Do we have to play on to determine the winner? If my end victory was doubtful I do not want it.

Let us know please.

D.I.S.

P.S.
Checking my and my opponents histories, I find that more of these "ties" have taken place, where both players won. Confused

P.P.S.
Silly me! I won nevertheless! Even with Rode Katers winning the "tie" match, I still defeated him with 3-2. Great. Smile

Hi everyone!

Jac and I played our matches last night.

I was able to finish the match with an endscore of 3-2.

Jac - thaddäus

1) 115 - 123
2) 103 - 100
3) 114 - 100
4) 103 - 121
5) 105 - 107

Two of them were very close (we took each of them), and we both had to struggle in order to make our games.
The last one was without question (for me) the toughest one, jac had NY-SE and WIN-LR, as I had KC-HOU and CAL-SLC.
It is the only game where I remember the tickets and I was lucky to take the 6s and to finish fast, so Jac wasn't able to have longest path and had still some wagons left.

Jac, thanks for the exciting games. i hope we can play again, just for fun...

Peter de Zeeuw and LotusArdent have been having trouble scheduling their match. Peter believes it will be resolved one way or another by Friday night, so I have given them until then to finish or have someone declare a forfeit.

I plan to post the semi-final draw on Saturday, my time.

I plan to post the semi-final draw on Saturday, my time.

I'm very disappointed

We scheduled the tournament from the 20th of june to the 18th of july because of holidays departures

If you give more days for second and third rounds : the tournament couldn't finish in time !!!

I leave on the 16th of july. Then, if I can get to finals, I won't be there anymore and I'll have to declare forfeit !!!!!!

I'm angry because it was said at the beginning, before we accept you as boss !

léachris écrit le Tue, 24 May 2005 13:31

We are organizing, Vinz and I an open tournament

the tournament will begin after the 15th of june
( but we can't wait more because in july , many players are on holidays )

tjandjahall : just a reminder on a few rules of this open ! (and to help you in your "sherrif" function Very Happy )
- 1/16th and 1/8th must be played within a week (3 days alllowed for each one, in order to end the tournament before the vacations of everybody...)

Hmmm... well, I have to agree with Léachris here. If that's the agreement then we must stick to that.

However, I still want to play LotusArdent fair and square and I hope we can play our matches this Friday.

Extend the tournament a little, is that a possibility?

Anyway, you have the final say, Tjandjahall. So we'll wait for you decisions.

And what will happen, when the matches arenot beginning or only a part of them?
Forfeit for both or wait until both can tell tjandjahall their situation in the evening and than he will decide.

For me time doesn't matter because we are not going into holidays in July. But I am estonished how difficult it is to make appointments for these tournament. Is it serious to register for a tournament and than find not the time.

The best is to make a shedule with fix time and date before the tournament starts, like (example)

semi-final at 12th of July 21:00 o'clock CET (Central European)
final at 14th of July 21:00 o'clock CET

At the beginning from the tournament everybody can plan the rounds and organize it. The difficulties now doesn't make fun.

P.S. And Peter: you will not my final destination here

It should have been scheduled that way :

Each round will be scheduled to play on certain dates. I know this all sounds very formal and perhaps a little intimidating, but as I said, I've organised tournaments before, and I've seen how things can turn surprisingly nasty. It's better to have things specified in advance and then not need to use them than to run into a nasty argument and not have the rules clear. The tournaments so far have been friendly, but it is probably a good idea to get used to having a formal structure now, so that tournaments will remain friendly in the future.

second and third round lastings were changed : quite intimidating Laughing Laughing Laughing Laughing

léachris and vinz, from this point application of the rules has to be at my discretion alone, because you two are players. It's very bad for players to be able to influence the administration of a tournament, for obvious reasons.

Vinz and I decided to organize this tournament and we accepted tjandjahall as a tournament director but now, he doesn't respect what we decided and what he said Confused Confused

I agree

If I organize another tournament (which is not sure at all), I'll direct it myself, except if someone prefers tjandjahall's way to do !

not whining but angry : Vinz and I accepted a tournament director, we were not obliged to, that's all .
It had to make our "player's life" easier, it doesn't !

And peter, mind your own business !

Hi everyone

I just wanted to let you know that I won't be able to play from the 12th (included) to the 14th of July as I will be on my way back home.

Just for your information...

I wrote, earlier

Otherwise, I may allow extra time to complete a match, but I am unlikely to do this unless the players have scheduled to play within a fairly short timespan.

When Peter contacted me concerning this, he told me that should he and LotusArdent be able to play, it would be Friday night, his time. I thus used the discretion I asserted earlier to allow them to play. Should I not hear from one or both of them by tomorrow afternoon (my time) I will disqualify one or both of them, so that we can move on with the tournament. (Yes, Peter, I said "one or both". Torsten is correct in his implication that the tournament cannot wait any longer past the deadline I gave, so if you have something to say about it, you should send me a PM before that deadline.)

Part of the difficulty here is that there is no means for a tournament director to confirm that Peter has been available to play while LotusArdent has not. Even should I rule a forfeiture against LotusArdent, I would have to give her a chance to respond to that ruling. Accounting for time zones and forum habits, I can't reasonably expect that to take less than a day. Allowing the delay until the time Peter said they should be able to play was two days. I found that it was a tough call for me to make, because I know time is against us all, but in the end I don't believe it makes the tournament unworkable. The time frame Peter gave is right on the edge of what I think is workable - so much so that I set a 10:00pm deadline, not a midnight deadline as have been all the others, so the second semi-final match-up will be revealed before I leave home to attend an engagement party on Saturday evening. Any later and the delay would prevent that second semi-final match being played over the weekend, Europe-time.

In the meantime, I have also encouraged early games for those with scheduling difficulties. I allowed for this precisely so as to allieviate time pressures of this type. Léa, you will be playing Thaddäus in the semi-final. There is no reason you two cannot play your game now.

I believe this tournament can be finished before the 16th, even with the delays caused by scheduling difficulties. Even if I am wrong about that, at the very worst the two finalists will be confirmed by then and should be able to schedule a mutually-compatible future time to play which will not inconvenience any other players (because there won't be any).

Torsten, your suggestion concerning set playing times for tournament matches is a good one for certain types of tournament, but not for others. What we have to remember is that this is an international, online playing venue. I am in Australia. Some players are in Europe. I may be guessing incorrectly, but I thought some players were in North America. That means that whatever time to set for a play round, somebody is going to wind up playing either in the wee hours of the morning or in the middle of the day. Assuming most of us have some other commitments in our lives, this is impractical.

So, that style of scheduling is probably workable if the aim is a regional tournament, but not if you want to run a tournament which is truely open to all - which was the stated aim for this tournament.

Based on my experiences running this tournament, I have some ideas for making better use of the available technology to ensure that games are completed in a more timely fashion. Communication needs to be more open, so that the tournament director (and others) can verify the availability of the players.

As for future tournaments... I've received positive feedback concerning the running of this tournament from most who had a comment to make, until now, so I am likely to step up and run another tournament. That said, I feel my handling of this tournament has been inadequate in certain aspects - mistranscribing two results most notably, but also a failure to recognise certain limitations of the technology and practice in use regarding verifiability and timeliness of responses. So, if I do organise another tournament, there will be some changes made to tighten up the running and reduce the possibility of error on my part.

Also, Torsten, if you are worried about the time required to finish the next two matches, why don't you contact Peter and LotusArdent now? It can't hurt to have contingencies worked out so that you can play whichever opponent you have to meet very quickly after tonight.

I do sympathise with your feelings over scheduling, BTW. You seem to have had more scheduling problems than anybody else, with that kerfuffle over contacting alektacrome.

Re:Open tournament Fri, 08 July 2005 07:34
yes, you're right it is my fault

I have sheduling problems because I want to make appointments and keep them. I send PM and answering them. When I have to leave a game I come back and make an apoligizes cause of technical problems.

My sheduling problems are that I don't want to stay 24 hours in the lounge every day to wait for my opponent until he wants to play. And I it my fault that I don't play every day ttr.
And I spend the money for the webcard, really bad when I can play free of charge.
And it is my fault that I say something negative about behauvior and correctness from our players.

When I read this from tjandjahall
"You seem to have had more scheduling problems than anybody else, with that kerfuffle over contacting alektacrome."

I should give forfeit next round. Good luck for my opponent in the final.

thanks a lot
torsten
