Alternative miniatures (?) Sat, 02 June 2007 19:09
Hi there all,

I was wondering if anyone new good makers of minitures that fit Battlelores scale? And to that matter what scale is it (15mm, 18mm or 20mm).

I've found a couple of good looking figures (Irregular Miniatures in particular as they are based in the UK which helps a lot for me) but would prefer to get minis that fit closly to scale.

I'm looking to get minis to try out my alternative races / critters (I'll get DOWs stuff as and when it comes but the mini bug has bit Wink )

TIA

Chris

Check out the Age of Mythology board game by Eagle Games. It has tons of minis perfectly on scale. There are human units, as well as centaurs, medusae, scorpion men, trolls, giants, mummies, and more.

Someone in another post suggested Corvus Belli 15mm miniatures, but I didn't think they matched up that well with the infantry figures...they looked like halfings compared to the Battlelore infantry figures! However, the Corvus Belli 100 Years' War cavalry was a fairly close match, being a tad bit smaller - and that's the problem. The cavalry figures and infantry in the game seem to be on a different scale when compared to each other.

The closest match for infanty I found were plastic 1/72 miniatures from Revell - their English and French Knights are just a little bit taller that the Battlelore infantry units, and would probably be just fine as long as you don't mix them in and kept the Revell figures in seperate units. Another good match are the Zvezda French Knights, which are practically the same size and are very detailed as well. Their cavalry units are a bit smaller than the Revell horses, but both will tower over the Battlelore cavalry. In addition,Zvezda is supposed to release English troops towards the end of the year.

I don't own any 15mm cavalry except for the Corvus Belli, and they are probably the closest in size that I've seen, so I'd try for lines of 15mm for cavalry and 1/72 plastics for infantry. Good luck, and I hope this helps you in your search.

The BattleLore miniatures are a slightly odd scale. They are more 15mm than anything else. Match up the foot figures with a mounted figure and you will see that the mounted figures area a bit smaller in scale.

Others have commented on the strange left handedness of some of the figures. While I like the character of the figures, think the bases are great and like the way they paint up, I have concluded to go to 15mm armies to game with. I think the 1/72nd figures would also work well. I am using that scale for C&C Ancients.

Regards,

Battle Cry Bill

Just reinforcing what has already been said: "The Age Of Mythology" game offers a great selection of figures that are almost the right scale, and should be fun to work with i.e. deciding of appropriate movements, attack strengths, ranges, etc. for each new unit.

Also, there are a plethora of 1/72nd ("HO") scale model figures of various Knights, Barbarians, Huns, etc. from Revell and other companies (i.e. Italian & Russian) that can be found on-line and in hobby shops; that are close enough in scale to be acceptable to all but the most pedantic novice war gamer.

Sooo, if my math is correct 1/72 = a 25.4 mm Infantry figure and... a 15 mm soldier is the equivalent of a 1/122 scale. Can someone verify those numbers?

http://www.onsitediecast.com/scale.htm

they stop at 6.5mm Confused

6mm is 1/285 or for some 1/300, but once you get that small, 015 is nothing to worry over.

I have a lot of WWII minis in 6mm and do grand battles in scale!!! for M44, except for the buildings most all of the terrain I have will work for the 1/72 minis I have for Ancients, the big board is 6 foot by 4 foot with 5 inch hexes... it is so cool to play on...

GW Ogres are the same size as Battlelore giants plus they look much scarier, likewise GW spiders are the same size. I have added these to my Battlelore set, just not painted them yet.

Using figures from War of the Ring you can add elves and uruk-hai, which you canconvince yourself should be taller than men anyway, and of course ents and siege engines if you have the expansion.
