M44 PDF Output- Bug reports and feedback Sat, 12 May 2007 00:47
Please post any real bug (with as precise a description of the problem as you can), as well as suggestions for improvements on this thread. This will help us progressively tackle them.
thank you.

Longer scenario titles are overlapped by the Setup Order box. See Scenario 25 for an example.

Great Dane pointed this one out. When a scenario contains more than 9 or so different types of terrain, they 1) extend beyond the box reserved for terrain, 2) show the numbers off-center from the circle, and 3) overlap the first paragraph of text. Scenario 45 is an example of this.

Also, adjusting text size for longer text is a good idea. You may also want to develop a way in the Scenario Editor that either A) limits the number of characters per section or B) create a seperate section in the scenario editor for "Additional Notes" That way people can have the option of putting design notes, extra background, etc. while leaving just the info peritant for the scenario itself.

Re: M44 PDF Output- Bug reports and feedback Sat, 12 May 2007 10:05
Cantata's scenario #1724 is a good example of the 4 main problems in which:
(1) the headline is overlapped by the Setup Order
(2) the Scenario Briefing is overlapped by the setup Order
(3) the Setup Order is too long to fit inside the box
(4) the Special Rules is continuing outside the text area (into the right border/margin) and is cut off because it doesn't fit into a single page.

I agree with ColtsFan76 that it would be good idea to fix the text size
(although that won't help displaying exsisting scenarios - and there are quite a number of those as I have had to downscale and cut-and-paste numerous scenarios to have them fit onto a single sheet)

But the Setup Order box problem is more difficult to solve.
Several scenarios have more than 20 different types of pieces - the largest I have printed out uses 25 different pieces (#3163 Trondheim) and ther is no way thay can fit into single sheet unless they are downscaled - which is what I have done: they run all along the left edge of sheet, but has been downscaled to 50%.

Flush your browser's cache, it certainly has cached an incomplete version of the PDF file. Also, the pdf shouldn't display directly in the browser, your browser should ask you what to do with the file (and the right choice is indeed save it).

On what scenario did you get the issue ?

I didn't get the choice of open or save, adobe just automatically tried to open it in the browser.

If after flushing your cache as Brice suggests you still have an issue, you will have to give us additional details (browser used, etc...).
thanks.

I am not having any issues with the PDF (besides the ones stated above). However, the PDF does NOT ask what I want to do - it goes directly into my browser. Not sure if this was something you intended or a bug with my system. I have IE and Adoe Reader.

It's probably due to the fact that you installed a plug-in, some time ago, or an option that said "Open my PDF files in my browser".

Actually, I believe it is a 'feature' of newer Adobe Reader versions that the pdf files are, by default, opened inside your browser. This behaviour started for me a considerable time ago; so now I right-click and choose "Save target as ..." when I desire either to save a copy of the file, or encounter unusual behaviour from Adobe inside the browser. (The latter does happen occasionally.)

I could probably figure out where the switch is to turn this behaviour off again, but it has never become an issue worth pursuing.

I am not sure what compression tool your Export program is using, if any, but the file sizes are immense. The output looks great aside from the texting issues mentioned above, but the scenarios when exported are all 3700-4000KB whereas if I use the freeware PDFCreate! program the same files are 800-900KB. For some people this might not be an issue, but for those of us with 40GB hard drives on our laptops, that is a bit much. Maybe lower the default DPI on the Export or something?

But overall, the Export option is a very nice addition to the website.

beta #2 is now available online

bug fixed:
a) All known overlaps are fixed
i) the setup order panel is now proportional to the number of items
ii) If the setup order is longer that the height of the board, there is no more overlap
iii) If there is too much text to fit on one page, the font size is reduced to fit in one page (WITHIN REASON)
b) There is a progression bar while downloading the file
c) The pdf is now saved as a file (not shown in the browser, with browser dependent results)
d) Colors and fonts are closer to the ones in the manual.
e) Other purely aesthetic modifications

Please do not hesitate to post any problem that you still find.

While it is fine that the PDF is no longer opening in the browser, I now have the problem that my virus protection prevents the file from downloading.

I know that I can turn off my protection or even lower it to a degree where it will accept the download - but I am willing to do that. I can easily download files from sites where the link is not hidden behind a javascript engine that doesn't allow to accept or decline the file.

What kind of virus protection are you using ?
What does it report exactly ?
I don't see what could be harmful in downloading a pdf file, compared to how your virus protection software was happily accepting to simply display it embedded in your browser...

Outstanding work, crew.

The only 2 remaining problems I have seen are:

  1. Scenario Title too long (Ex: "[Guadalcanal] Nettoyage du secteur de la rivière Matanikau"). Maybe you could apply a moderate horizontal compression and/or reduce font size when the title overflows.
  2. Too many items in the setup order (Ex: "[Peleliu] Débarquements - Overlord"). Maybe you could reduce the size of the tile icons (only for hexes) so you can fit more of them vertically. If they were as small as the hexes in an overlord board picture, they would still be recognizable, given the resolution you are using.

As for the file size, I prefer high-resolution images (better for printouts), so I don't mind large files. Maybe you could offer different image resolutions as options to satisfy those with bandwith/disk space constraints.

Now, the Battlelore players are going to be screaming at you to get this PDF renderer for their scenarios too... Razz

If the text is too long - it does not work very
well. See this scenario:

Given that we do not have nor want to develop a template for multi-pages scenarios at this point, if the text is really too long (ie longer than anyone would reasonably print on a single page), all we could do is truncate the historic part by inserting an ellipsis... automatically after a certain length.

Needless to say, the author would be much better off reducing his text to a more reasonable length (because at least he can decide how to reduce the text, which an automatic cut would not be able to do).

Excellent idea!

Is there a character limit that you know of that would be a good cut off point? I could (and probably should anyway) make my Historical Backgrounds shorter and more concise.

If it is more than a paragraph or two, my wife just glazes over until I am done reading it anyway

I use F-Secure.
But it really is Internet Explorer that blocks the download because it prevents websites from dowloading malware onto my PC.

It does not prevent me from downloading files when using the "Save to" feature in the right-click menu.

I'll suggest this again if it is possible. The ellipses is a good idea for those authors that may have moved on and are no longer around to edit their work. But going forward, I would rather not see these in the PDF's especially if it is only a few words that get cut off. Better to force people to start shortening what they have to say.

Once this thing is all ironed out, I plan to blindly print as many as I can at work (shhh!!!). I would be pretty dissappointed to get around to the scenarios at a later date and then find the text was cut off just as I was about to play it.

The export PDF feature has been updated. Here is a list of the changes made:

a) Font size of title is automatically reduced when title is too long.

b) Size of setup order icons are reduced when necessary

c) Very large historical backgrounds are handled better, still by font size reduction.

In the future, when reporting a bug, please include the scenario number of an offending pdf output, thanks.

Keep those coming!

PDF export - big point for DOW. Was waiting a long time for that.
My only concern - the background is gone in the last version. No difference if I check or uncheck the box for background - there is none. Using A4 format, didn't check for letter.

Well -problem was/is my downloadmanager. If the export goes via the downloadmanager the background is lost. If I download directly via Browser the background is in. Both files have the same size.
So no idea what happens. Now I just do the export now without the download manager - but stay a little bit puzzled.

First of all, thank you for the PDF exporter. When it works, it's great. But I'm having problems using it. It doesn't really work at all with my primary browser Opera 9.1, and not much better with Internet Explorer.

Some issues:

- I have to flush the cache after every PDF I make, or it doesn't start the download for the next one. Is this a common issue?
- Usually it takes more than 5 mins for the download to start.
- Sometimes it doesn't load the whole file, sometimes only about 50kb and sometimes almost 3mb. This happens maybe 75% of the times I try it. And it's not a download manager or such, it shows the incorrect file size already when the browser asks where to save it.
- When it actually does download the ~4mb that the file size normally is, maybe half of those files are corrupted and Acrobat cannot open them. Have to download again, if it lets me download it again. Crying or Very Sad

And today I got this error message:

FPDF error: Unable to create output file: /tmp/scenario_1584_L_B.pdfyieClr

And all this happens with every scenario. A few I have gotten without problems at all, but that's a rare case.

I'm having a similar problem; when I select the Export option it takes ages to connect to the site before starting the download. Then when it downloads Acrobat says it is damaged or corrupted. This is happening for virtually every scenario I try to download now.

Same here. I printed up 6 the other day with just a few snags. Today, I can't even get one to start downloading most of the time and if it does it's corrupted.

As a side note, the ones that worked the other day, pop up a window and ask where I want the file saved. The ones that hang up, never show that window.

Yep. After having no luck with IE, I tried to download the files with Firefox. According to the message bar at the bottom of the browser, the problem seems to be the Days of Wonder server as there is a continuous message of "Waiting for www.daysofwonder.com..." as if to say a connection is never made.

If I leave it alone for a loooong time, apparently the file downloads, but it is then corrupted and will not open.

On the FEW occasion where things are going right, the downloas window pops up immediately once you click on "Export Now" and the file takes less than a minute to download.

Please look into this Days of Wonder!!

On another note:

It seems like there are some unnecesary steps here. If the problem is that every time someone asks for the file it has to be created through exporting it, why not just have the .pdf already there as a link that you can simply right click on and save like 99% of anything else you download?

That would be a matter of opinion.
I prefer the look of the original - they were easy to print, looked cleaner and didn't waste more toner than necessary.

The only problem it had (and which it still has) was that the components list didn't run in a column along the entire lenght of left margin, so that all items could fit on a single sheet of (A4/letter-sized) paper.

This isn't really a bug, so I don't know if this is the right place to post this idea, but... Twisted Evil

On a M44 forum, when a thread gets to be a certain length, a second page is created to continue the discussion. To get to the second (or third or fourth) page one has to scrole all the way down to the bottom of each page before one can press the button for the next page.

Would there be a way to place the button to skip pages at the top of each discusion and at the bottom? That way if you know you need to find something on the second page, you choose it from the top rather than scrolling all the way down... Very Happy Any chance of that?
