I discovered the question about terrain on the french-speaking forums and think it is a good idea to share thoughts about this subject, what we could add to the game. Rolling Eyes

Some might say, we have enough diffrent hex tiles already, but i say its so easy to addapt to that !
With the simple system off protection, move and battle limitations, it is a very small step to add and remember these.
Don t forget, to help us out here, we have our 'terrain cards', ' action cards' as a backup !

For me i would like to see:

Small buildings:

- diffrent ones or 1 small tile as we use for obstacles, bunkers, etc., representing a 'shed', 'barn', 'wooden house', 'hangar', 'log cabin': -1, -1

Open terrain blockers as:also small tules to put on the board
'a pile off wood': -1, -1 , could use the roadblock but we need more off them

'a pile off rubble': -1, -1 , could use the abatis, but we need more off them and maybe for diffrent fronts (normal, desert, snow)

'wreckage': -1, -1, can be used by infantry only, block los

'a line off trees': -1, -1, block line off sight (for diffrent fronts)

'bushes & vignards': -0, -0, but block the line off sight ! (for diffrent fronts)

'heather': -1,0

terrain changes due to fightingthis would add a 3d effect for the game

'extra sea tiles', 'beach(sand) tile', 'high ground'

'small craters': -1, 0 (hex hit by artillery fire, could change dimentions !) (we already have small crator tyles as airstrike markers, but we would simple need lots and lots more off these for the diffrent fronts)

'big crater': -1, -1 (when terrain is hit by airpower of barrage)

/=> houses could change to ruines when hit several times
forests and other terrain could go up in flames

/-> airplanes or armor or arty could use firebombs

Heavy protection terrain:

'armor implacement': -2, -2 (we could use the bunker also for this, or in preference an extra tyle but then you need some special action rules also i gess. (see below)

more types off houses, like 'farms', 'country cottage', etc. ...

Diffrent types of bridges:

'footbridge': infantry only (we can use the rope bridge but then we need more of them and add this to the scenario rules
'small pontoon': light structure, not for armor because they are to heavy. (we could use the pontoon bridge and add this to the scenario rules)


and ad some extra actions as:

- ' all dig-in': when the dig-in card is played it can be used by ALL forces to put sandbaggs on them for protection
- ' armor dig-in': armor for defending forces, can move into and out off a bunker on the backside, as 'defender', representing aormor implacements
- 'snow rules': infantry can only be spotted from 2 hex distance
- 'forest warfare rules': infantry can only be spotted from 2 hex away due to terrain camouflage
- 'jungle warfare rules': infantry can only be spotted from adjecent hex

- 'light armor': all armor marked, are light armor units, they battle only 3-2-2
- 'heavy armor specials': all armor marked, are heavy armor that battle 4-3-3
- 'Flame trower infantry': all infantry marked have flametrowers
the battle at 3,1,0 and do ignore terrain protection

- 'rainy weather rules': visibility limited to 4 hex, no airpower (airsorty) can be played
- 'stormy weather rules': visibility limited to 3 hex, no airpower can be played, landing craft can only move 1 hex, artillery limited by spotting difficulties

- 'air drop': the airpower is played as an airdrop
take 2 inf figures and drop them on the board from box height, when they land safely you got extra units !

- 'anti-air protection': AA Guns protect all adjecent units and limit airpower and airstrikes to 1 dice. The star is NOT a hit !
/=> we could need a new unit for this !
'AA gun: protects adjecent units against airstrikes and airpower. Fires 2 - 2 - 2 - 2. Star is NOT a hit on armor.
(we could use the 88 figures for it, but will need to badge them or this pourpous then to diffrentiate form the Heavy Anti-tank Gun, since you could use both in one scenario.)

- 'heavy airstrikes': airpower and airstrikes have 2 dice for all sides
- 'air recon & spotting': artillery has bether aim on targets and adds 1 dice to there roll for target who sit in a hex where it has movement limitaions and has to stop when moving in.

- 'distructable terrain': units can use there battle dice against terrain types to demolish those (star hit as for objectives)
/=> this could have extreme tactical consequences for attackers and defenders !
- 'firebombs': artillery and airpower, air units can 'bombard terrain' as in 'distructable terrain'
- 'carpet bombing terrain': firebombs only for airpower and air units (we might get bomber planes for this ?!)


Well i could go on, maybe i should leave some ideas to others to write here ! Laughing

some of those are great! Razz

However, when talking about actions/terrain, I do think that there are a good bunch of them already implemented that are rarely used.

Examples:

- Power Plants
- Radar Stations
- Lighthouses
- PoW Camps
- Sabotage
- Forward Spotting
- and so on and so forth.

- What about a scenario in which a side needs to make work a Lighthouse to help destroyers bomb a specific target in the beach to win the battle?
- What about a scenario in which a side needs to give power supply to a radar station to provide an extra air power/air sortie?
- What about a scenario to sabotage power plants, radar stations or any other landmark as a sudden death objective?

On one hand I believe that the game may be expanded with new terrain/types (some of those you mentioned are great!) but on the other, I truly think that there are a few features that should be used more often, adding a bit more of spice to the game .

Would like to see a Regiment take cover in a shed! Laughing Laughing

I also had the idea of some kind of AAA maybe a card that could be played or a new unit.

I've already done some of these with the crater markers in AP plus crater markers in TOI.

by making some scenarios myselfs, i found out that i was in need off some tyles i didnt have in the box.

Since i m doing historical research and then want to recreate a battle in remembrance off the heros who did the fighting, i m not looking for 'fictional' use off those tiles you re mentioning.

It might look to some that to many tyles will make it to difficult, but remember to use the 'terrain', 'troops', 'action', etc. ... cards as a reference ! Rolling Eyes

If you want to keep things simple you can always stick to the basic game and troop expansions.

your totaly right sir, it isnt shure what scale the game was designed for and you are correct scenarios differ in that also.

Looking at the tiles already in the game there is a choice and you have the posibilities to go for diffrent scales.

On one hand you have the 'small' objects like: sandbaggs, hedgehogs, road block, field bunker, train, landing craft, jeep, etc. ...,

on the other hand we got: airfield, a fortress, power plant, a dam, mountains, destroyers, aircarriers, etc ... , shurey not something to fit into your garden sandbox Laughing

Myself, i m using real life maps from the era, arial pictures and add google to this to see the correct scale off the battle field.
I think i am on 'platoon level'. The figs on vechicles for me are more like 'counters', representing how 'tough' it is to destroy them.

The 'smaller' objects i m asking for, i got the idea from the road block.

Mainly, i started digging into the tyles because i was missing a 'small in protection hex' ('small building(s)') or LOS blockers for strategical reasons.

I also needed to make me some 'scenario specific' rules, to reproduce some 'historical' important events that took place during a battle.
Ex. 2 distant targets an aid post and a HQ got taken out during a battle and that made one side descide to fight another day and retreat. In my scenario, hitting those 2 targets gives you a medal.

1. Proper cliffs/sea bluff tiles that show the hill from one side and countryside from the other. That way the guy going up the cliff doesn't get terrain protection from inland units.

2. Sea tiles so you can create a bay or side-ocean and/or move up a destroyer.

3. An extra row for each side so you can have scenarios on 11 rows like Operation Market Garden, and extra medal spots for scenarios that go to 7+ medals. The board's too small for big tank battles from Eastern or Mediterranean.
