Looney is too generous with that description as far as our battle goes, hardly mince meat if you ask me!!

As stated earlier, 25 turns, 40 minutes of head scratching wondering if DAYLIGHT would appear, which it did, in all its full glory!!

Things started innocently enough, opened on my LEFT and moved SF unit up to forest and 2 tanks up and in front of forest.

He countered with RECON 1 on his LEFT and moved in to snipe my sniper, darkness and forest allowed my sniper to go unscathed, one shot helps as far as misses go!!

The sunlight attempted to come through, 0-4 on that roll, PROBE 2 on my RIGHT, thought I would check out who or what was shooting at my sniper, tanks moved up behind my sniper, moral support on this cold night, my sniper took a shot in the dark and I heard, "Achtung, I die young!" Apparently I hit what I was aiming at!! 1 dead AXIS sniper.

The AXIS then decided on a different tact, PROBE 2 in CENTER, moved ART up to ridge and SF Tanks to forest, behind the 2 sandbagged units, guess they needed their own moral support after the death of the brother.

Here, a ray of sunlight pokes through, up to 2 and with the sunlight reflecting off the medal in BELYI, I match his PROBE 2 in CENTER and move INF up to wire and TANKS behind INF, fire twice at the glinting medal and hit 2 AXIS figures!!

With darkness still hovering, AXIS PROBE 2 RIGHT and moves ENGINEERS and INF up 2 behind RZHEV to fortify his position there, his thinking was that darkness would hold out.

This is where the bad communications played a part, AXIS thinking he had hours of darkness left, wrong, the STARS at night twinkled out and the BIG STAR known as the SUN, made a guest appearance, 3 STARS rolled and SUN up to 5!! Fitting for a scenario rated 3 STARS!!

With AA in hand, moved ATTACK 3 in CENTER and tried to position ARMOR for the coming ASSAULT, one to wire, one forward on ridge and sniper shot at SWA, the lone hit of the round.

What followed next, I believe, set the tone for the rest of the fight, AXIS DFHQ, his ARMOR fired some on my ARMOR, 1 hit, in what would eventually be an 8-43 performance by the AXIS, 19%, though dice total close, 72-71 ALLIES, those misses would spell D.O.O.M. for him, but not by much.

From here, turn 7 to 12, action shifted to BELYI, both of us moving units on that flank, me hoping to take BELYI, he hoping to defend. I succeeded, 1st by killing his unit and getting a toehold on BELYI and then moving another unit in and securing the foothold on BELYI.

All this movement lead to turn 13, finally having moved my ARMOR up far enough to use the AA, moved forward and killed 2 weakened units behind BELYI and retreated his tanks, all the action from turns 7 to 13, resulted in a 4-2 ALLIES lead.

Action now back to the CENTER, with my ARMOR having moved up, an AXIS 2-2-2, and he attempts to reduce my ARMOR, but as stated earlier, right idea, success fleeting unfortunately for AXIS.

I answer with TFH, 3 active and in turn attack his ARMOR and reduce 1 unit to 1 fig, SF tank unit to 2 fig and make it retreat again, sniper finishes off SWA unit and 5-2 at this point.

He countered my TFH, same of 3 active, terminates 1 tank unit, reduces other to 1 fig and retreats it, 5-3 and just drawn DFHQ allows me to continue pressing my CENTER assault. Move SF unit out of BELYI, 1 fig tank up to ridge, other 2 tanks to CENTER on ridge and in wire outside Rzhev, results in 2 dead tank units for AXIS in CENTER and 1 hit and flag to ART and sandbagged AXIS tanks forced to retreat, 7-3 ALLIES.

WIth DAYLIGHT at max and much improved communications, from turn 7 to 18, AXIS decide to continue the FIREFIGHT in the CENTER, 1 ALLIES ARMOR dead, SF unit left with 1 fig and more misses on ALLIES ARMOR, 7-4.

3 from victory, I decide to listen to communique from DFHQ, move in for the kill on the ART on the back line with my SF unit, tanks over to center ridge to fire on sandbagged units and ENGINEERS up 2 and next to rubble in Rzhev, obvious thinking, kill ART and then move into Rzhev, game over, wrong!!! ART AMBUSHES my SF unit and tanks misfire in attempting to reduce his forces, 7-5 ALLIES.

From here, he moves on his RIGHT, ATTACK 3, reduces my ENGINEERS to 2, blocks my entry to RZHEV and have to go with alternate plan.

Here I go ALL in CENTER, move to reduce his units in forest and sandbags, move and lose sniper to a river crossing and as a result, sniper in river dies a frozen death and so does the replay!!!

Turns 21-25 are left to your imagination, but I can tell you he ended up with 2 more kills, ENGINEERS and SF unit and I ended it with an ARMOR ASSAULT on his INF outside of RZHEV, 1 armor with a 4-4 hit and kill and then other 2 a combined 4-4 on 3 fig sandbagged unit closest to RZHEV, think I was 10-10 on that assault, maybe 1 or 2 misses, not much, a 10-7 ALLIES victory.

A bold move at the end, paid off, if not, probably was in trouble!!! Had 1 tank unit at 1 fig and he still had 2 full strength tank units on his RIGHT and SF unit, can only speculate as to what might have happened!!!

Had good cards on my side, 2 DFHQ, 2 AA's, TFH, combined with his ARMOR hit rate and results were positive for me.

Dice:

ALLIES: 38-72 = 53% AXIS: 21-71 = 30%
INF: 30-45 = 67% AXIS: 13-28 = 46%
ARMOR: 07-24 = 29% AXIS: 08-43 =19%
ART: 01-03 =33% AXIS 00-00 = 00%

As you can see, total about the same, but % way better for me on INF, ARMOR not much difference, but his misses were hugh. Without them or not as many misses, victory no doubt his, being I never captured RZHEV and got those 2 medals and probably wouldn't have had the units to press the action in the CENTER.

Well fought Eric/LooneyLlama and glad I could contribute to the ALLIES win total this round!!!

Replay if you want to follow to turn 20:

Jeronimon just played fabulous, as Flying Dutchman do. His troops floated across the board getting side by side with my troops to fire their guns, sink them in the deep waters of the Dow network cables and wires. I tried to round cape of Good Hope to go to the East despite advise of my troops to retreat. It left me, drifting in this sea of bits and bytes. Sometimes I am able to decrypt a message, hand it to a passenger, to send it to the families of the figures that did not survive my overstretched ambitions.

Wandering forever yours,

Hellcat

Despite the sad story of the Flying Dutchman we are still up 5-4 this round.

Therefore good luck to Geoff and his difficult task to bring the boys back home .

Well after a very hard fought battle I managed to pull out a very close victory against gheintze, score: 10-9 AXIS 26 turns.

This was an intense battle and day never fully dawned. In fact, it was turn 9 before light reached level 2, and turn 18 before it moved up to level 4.

The battle started off slowly, with both of us using the darkness to position our troops. On turn 5 gheintze attacked Belyi. However I managed to hold him off as his dice struggled. I was able to cripple most of his attacking force, but he managed to gain complete control of Belyi.

Then gheintze mounted a major attack on Rzhev. The action moved over there for most of the remainder of the battle. After fierce close combat fighting, gheintze eliminated most of my forces near Rzhev, though it came at a high cost for him as well.

We both had one unit on Rzhev and the score stood at 9-7 ALLIES on turn 23. I used a center assault to counter attack and killed his unit in Rzhev and moved a unit into Belyi. gheintze responded with a "move out" card that recaptured a hex of Rzhev and nearly killed my 3 figure infantry, which would have been the win.

It came down to his sniper, one die against my infantry, which at this point only had one figure left. Unbelievably the sniper rolled a flag! I was shocked, but managed to gain my last medal by eliminating a one figure tank unit.

A great match, that could have went either way. In fact, I learned afterwards that gheintze had barrage from turn 16, which would have assured victory if only daylight had come!

http://www.daysofwonder.com/memoir44-online/en/battle/?id=34 479875#replay:turn=1

Final stats:

25 figs killed, 63 dice, and a 40% hit rate for myself.

Gheintze killed 28 figs, rolled 57 dice, and had a hit rate of 49%, however he had a 21% flags percentage.

A great game! I had fun, and it really could have gone either way. Thanks to gheintze for being such a great opponent!

5-5 score this round. We go even into the next round. Let's go AXIS!!! Smile Very Happy Smile

For the record, in this round, my scorecard shows 62 medals for Axis against only 61 medals for the Russians. We hoped for a much bigger victory, but we'll take it.

Party in the bunker tonight, well done Josiah! Cool

Of course you are right Sam and the medals were 62 to 61. I am not so sur about the "only" 61. That is only 1 less than we got. Very Happy

The score chart at the moment:
https://dl.dropbox.com/u/30626174/jerfotodiv/Rhzev.png

Sam and van Voort matching the 4 to 1 that Geoff has got, but Geoff with the superior medal count/difference, so still in the lead.

Since the score was even we need some gentle propaganda undermining the morale of our enemies. As Julius Ceasar and napoleon would say: "Divide et Impera". Watch your back Russian friends for the British dogs are ready to stick it to you!.

This from Portugal, where one of our esteemed combatants resides. You know who you are! Cool

Portugal, published by Freichtverslag Schweis, a Nazi front.

"For the most part British propaganda worked extremely well in neutral Portugal and the vast majority of the people were pro-British and pro-Allies.This was not true however of Britain's ally Russia, as the Communist regime of Joseph Stalin was feared and not trusted. The fear and loathing of Stalin by the Portugese government was so apparent that his face was not even shown in newspapers and newsreels in Portugal until the final year of the war.

The Nazi-controlled Swiss Free Press was quick to take advantage of this situation by producing postcards such as this example: "The suicide of the British Lion." showing a bewildered British lion committing suicide with the Hammer and Sickle symbol of Soviet Russia. Since the autocratic regime of Antonio Salazar bred discontent in Portugal, particularly among the workers, the government felt uneasy about Russia assuming a dominant position in the world affairs.

The German ploy of drawing attention to the British-Russian alliance with cartoons such as this was effective not only with the Portugese but with the British themselves. Churchill in fact, suggested to Roosevelt a possible late war attack on the Russians who were weakened by four years of bitter fighting with Germany."

JJ's Naut,

Great battle between you and Geoff, right down to the last 2 moves and a difference of 2 die, miss for him, hit for you! Congrats on your victory and in tying the round at 5-5 and tourney at 19-17 ALLIES.

Geoff, almost, but have your cigar and vodka anyway, great fight! Still, along with V V, leading the way for the ALLIES, on to the next fight.

Only fitting going into the 1/2 way mark, score 19-17 ALLIES, overall medal count 243-240 ALLIES and no bonus for this round! So tight it is like living the life of a sardine! Very Happy

New year, 1943, and will see what that brings, until the BIG REVEAL, match ups and scenario, rest and relax and enjoy the stalemate of this round.

No worries Geoff, will take 4-1 in the next 4 rounds as well! That is as close too perfect as you will need to be! You did well to have it be as close as 10-9, with his one turn, think 13 or so, 3 kills and almost a 4th!

Enjoy the mourning period, hope the cigar and vodka help!

The first landing at Malaya Zemlya took play just moments ago.
I have to report a very close fought battle, which resulted in a 9-7 victory for the Axis.

Jaykay started the landing on his right flank and initiated a great battle for that flank. The Axis got a bit lucky and took a headstart to 5-2 medals after 10 turns and with sunrise still at number "1". But then Jaykay took out the Axis special armour unit and closed the gap.

The battle shifted to the center and left flank and medals were won by both sides. Finally, turn 17, both sides had 8 medals with options to win the match. But finally the Axis special armour unit was able to force the russian infantry to retreat from the medal (hill Malaya Zemlya) and end the match with a 9-7 score.

Nice battle and start to Rd 5, can't recall, but believe the ALLIES have yet to win the 1st battle of each round!!! Shocked

Well done VCX1302 in answering JK2010's right flank assault with your own on that flank, think that was key to the battle.

S1812 and I are scheduled to meet today at 1630 EST, hope to right the "landing ship" then and make it 1-1 this round, though he pounded me in a different tourney setting last night!! Hope my short term memory works well! Laughing

The AXIS has triumphed! In a great match, I defeated JAParker 9-2 this afternoon. The dice and cards both went my way entirely. I had around a 42% hit rate versus his 30%.

As for the cards, he ended up with several recon cards in his hand (he had 1-2 in his hand for almost the entire game, and 4 at one point). Also he only had two tactic cards the entire game. Ambush right away, and TFH which he drew at the end of his last turn.

The majority of the battle was in the center, under cover of early morning, where I was able to hold him back before he was able to make much headway. He then unsuccessfully tried attacks on both his right and left flanks in the last few turns of the game.

Let's go AXIS, keep it up!

And yet another triumph for the Germans. sam1812 vs Gonzalan.

The Russians mounted a big attack on their right early in the battle, but wound up losing 5 units on that flank, while completing only one kill there themselves. The Russian invaders also attacked repeatedly against Malaya Zemlya, eliminating 4 infantry units from the two bunkers there. (Who says bunkers give protection?) On their last turn, Russian infantry grabbed both objectives, but my German artillery bombarded, wiping out one of the invaders and finishing off a damaged armor unit to win the day.

22 turns, 9-6 medals, 33-29 figures.

Well Gentlemen,

The Axis are on a roll. They won a hard fought, nail biting battle aginst Lucky91's Allies 9-7. This battle was very intense with the edge going back and forth. Lucky started out very well with a 4-1 lead with accurate hitting on my infantry. I then had 4 cards on my left flank where I could conduct a continuous attack on his right flank units. He countered but the topography was to my advantage. I eventually took a 6-4 lead. The end game was played superbly by Lucky as he nearly won the game. He was hampered by not getting any left flank cards later in the game.
Still,he missed victory by 1 infantry hit. With a 7-8 deficit I was able to kill off an infantry unit on Malaya Zemlya with an armor unit and took ground for the final medal.

This may have been the most exciting battle I have played in this tournament so far. We both had an overall hit rate of 40%, 77-75 in dice and 31-30 in figures.

Luc, great game. It was a lot of fun!

By the way, I see that the Axis are up 5-0. What's surprising is that I thought a slight edge would go to the Allies. I played it a couple of nights ago against Frederik and the Allies won both. Go figure. I know it is getting ony a 2 star rating but I think this scenario plays out really well.

van Voort (Allies) Hit Rate: 41% (43% vs inf, 38% vs arm), 70 rolls.
clorofila (Axis) Hit Rate: 54% (52% vs inf; 59% vs arm), 63 rolls.

replay: http://www.daysofwonder.com/memoir44-online/en/battle/?id=34 680338

Not only van Voort is understating, when he says that he had indifferent cards (he had lousy ones, especially when compared to mine) but this was a more intense game than the final result allows to guess. van Voort fought to his best skill, with both bad cards and bad dice and he managed to balance things up at a given time, with an offensive over his left flank.
But this is a very tricky map for allies, as the results are demonstrating, and all-out cards are a need for the allies, since they cannot afford to be caught outnumbered AND on the beach.

Luck wasn't definitively on your side, tonight, vV. Better luck next time. But it is always an excitement to play against you!

(PS: sorry for my quick getaway, but I hadn't have diner yet when we played and I was absolutely starving)

No wonder: the only player who has rated the scenario with 1 star played only once, vs Hermann, and lost 3-9 as allies...

Oi, tough going for the ALLIES this round, 5-0 in victories and 6-0 in pts and best we can do in 6-3 and keep the bonus at 3 pts.

Appears that dice and cards not going our way so far, best chances were JK2010 and Lucky91 with tantalizingly close victories in their battles, but just couldn't finish them off.

As for the rest of us, % on hits has not been the best and as Clorofila stated, with the lack of ALL cards and having the Gung Ho feature, unable to sustain our attacks and of course the play of our AXIS friends have contributed to our defeats!!!

Up to SAC Helcat, Geoff and TC to get us back in the round and keep things close overall heading into the B-B Offensive, hoping the name will implies good things for the ALLIES!!!

As for the scenario, enjoyed it even though I was on the short end of things with S1812, as I was all weekend against him!! Lots of factors play into it, movement, terrain, objectives, night rules, gung-ho, blitz rules, where to attack and try to sustain that attack, position, plenty to think about to try to sway things your way.

This round hasn't gone our way, but still hope in 3 of our fellow ALLIED compatriots to give us moment going into the next round, best of luck gentleman.

We're just having a beach party with good German beer.

And I promised my team an oom-pah band if we win the round. So here it is:

Well that was certainly worth looking. It put a big smile on the faces of my girlfriend and me, but the kid didn't really get it. Ah well we still have some upbringing to do. Razz

I am pleased to report the first (and hopefully not the last) Russian win in this round Very Happy

Here it is folks:

http://www.daysofwonder.com/memoir44-online/en/battle/?id=34 689676#replay:turn=1

and my report to HQ:

Most of the fighting took place on the Russian left and the portion of the center near Malaya Zemlya. Early on I got 3 hits with 3d against the Elite Panzer. I soon lost my Elite Infantry on the medal hex and the medal too to trail 0 to 2 early. I then lost a tank on my left and had a center tank reduced to 1 fig. I also had two 1 fig infantry down to 1 fig also. Things did not look good.

With the range still at 2 on my 5th turn four of my infantry charged the hills and took out a 2 fig infantry in the center FB and also a 1 fig panzer on the hills. My opponent then choses to try and hide his right 1 fig Elite Panzer in the woods. In my next turn I played MOVE OUT again and a 2 fig Elite Infantry kills the Elite Panzer for 2 medals. I took ground into the woods and as I had INF ASSAULT hoped to exit that unit in my next turn. I also take out a 2 fig FB infantry that turn and now lead 5 to 3.

A German BEL is put to good use and it kills off my 2 fig Elite Infantry that was set to exit the board-ah well-so much for plan A. On my 7th turn the range goes to 3 hexes and only gets to 4 later on. I lose a center tank and the game is 6 to 4 in my favor.

An infantry battle then ensues on my left and I get the upper hand after playing back to back INF ASSAULTs. I kill off two Elite Infantry to take an 8 to 4 lead. Only the SW AT Infantry is left on the German right. I have two infantry ready to exit the board in my next turn and also can take the hill medal hex. My opponent could do little but make an infantry kill of my right and on my next turn a 1 fig Elite Inf marches into the hill medal hex.

On another note we played a rematch game and the Rusisans won again-so there is hope for our side:

http://www.daysofwonder.com/memoir44-online/en/battle/?id=34 690256

An early infantry kill by the Germans with but 5d gave cover to a 2 fig Elite Inf in a FB. A Russian AMBUSH wiped out a 3 fig infantry. A Russian BEL gained 2 medals for exiting units-a huge play. An endgame Russian FF proved to be the difference. In the end game is was anybody's game with both sides firing mostly blanks. I had only a 39% hit rate vs the infantry (against 49 to my opponent) which proved to be my undoing. I would have liked to prevail in this one too but (unlike in Rd 1) I won the one that counted Smile

Well tank commander, a deserved win!

I am still kicking myself for putting my lonely tank I the forest instead of attacking with it.

The rematch was indeed very close with that (almost) undestroyable tank.

Two very fun games. See you again on the battlefields somewhere. Cool

Jeronimon,

Well don't kick too hard, still plenty of fight to do!!

TC,

Well done and thanks for getting the "good guys" on the board and hope it is the start of a 3 match win streak and gets us to 6-3 of the round and 23-22 overall and the "bad guys" only get a 3 pt bonus!!!

Thanks for showing us that it could and can be done, we were close on 2 other matches and now over the hump.

Go SAC Helcat and Geoff!

My goodness ... off in the distance, what's this I see? It's a line of Soviet cheerleaders, in drab, wool miniskirts. Didn't Party Headquarters tell them it's February?

It's a good thing they were off in the distance. I don't think their legs were shaved. Ugh.

Sunrise came quickly (hopefully as I have forgotten the night rule at my first turn Rolling Eyes)

A tough attack was done by Gheintze on his right flank, defeating the german advanced defenses. Fight was tough, my engineers leaving the cover of the city to take back the bunkers in menatime his infantry pushed my artillery unit to retreat. But, an heroic defense (I played TFH, activating 5 units who killed 3 russians units) cleared this side and let Gheintze knocked.

The battle moved then to the rest od the map, with a long battle around Malaya Zemla hill. But, the difference was done and the battle has finished by a german win.

Result : Gheintze 7 medals vs Artimon 9 medals

http://www.daysofwonder.com/memoir44-online/fr/battle/?id=34 714073

Thanks Gheintze for this nice moment spent together. TFH card has definitively helped me to win.

Well played, Artimon.

The TFH wiped out my right flank -- I had two cards left for there and an Arty Bombard which was never used...

Great game against a great player. I was lucky to get 7 medals.

This may have been the most exciting battle I have played in this tournament so far. We both had an overall hit rate of 40%, 77-75 in dice and 31-30 in figures.

Luc, great game. It was a lot of fun!

well done , Eric .

it was very exciting . A great scenario !

thanks for your tournament Smile

I promised my very fine Generals some more music if we earned a tank for the next round. Settle down for some nice Wagner, gentlemen, while we watch some video that our Information Ministry shot this week.
