Interesting Article with DoW CEO Sun, 24 March 2013 16:41
So I came across this article from Wired with the DoW CEO Eric Hautemont that I thought was really interesting. It was kind of a nice window into the thinking of the company. It's a little old so it may have already been referenced in this forum but I thought I'd post it anyways.

There isn't a whole ton about MM 44 but he makes a reference to how playing overlord on MM 44 is the perhaps the single most fun he's had playing tabletop.

He also talks about why they haven't add some of the features for other games like pocket Ticket to ride, like allowing online multi-player or the team version of TTR asia because they didn't feel like they would be able to really replicate the team interaction that occurs when you play it on a table. It made me think that perhaps that has something to do with Overlord online. That they would love to do it but don't think that they can replicate what goes on as a team online and they don't want to put out something that less then the best it could be.

Anyways, here's the link,

It's nice to know that we have a company that really cares about its product and customers.

With all proper protocol let me just say "yeah, yeah, yeah, cry me a river."

In all fairness, DOW is a business, and they have to make decisions and allocate resources accordingly. And the fact of the matter is there are far more players interested in playing Ticket to Ride than Memoir '44. But to pretend ghat the reason the CEO hasn't dedicated any time or money to M'44 in almost a tear and a half because he doesn't feel it would do justice to the table top experience is a load of bird poop.

For example, when was the last tim Rasmussen played M'44 online? Now compare that to how many posts he averages per day ( hint: about 3 per day)

I sincerely hope DOW decides to continue to support the online version of M'44 that they started so well. Such support would include an Overlord expansion, new scenarios and ranks, iPad version, etc. But I would not be surprised if the day cones when we read they have been bought by one of the mega online gaming companies and the characters we have battled and worked so hard to create and promote, and the friendships we have made as a result, simply evaporate...

Wait...what does this have to do with anything?! Confused

Are you trying to use me as an example of how the Online game isn't being updated? Rolling Eyes Because, with all due respect, you don't know why I haven't been playing Memoir '44 Online lately. I can tell you that my not playing online has nothing to do with the lack of updates!

Thanks for bringing up this, Peiper21.

In all fairness, M44O is a beautiful product that just has been neglected lately. I can't see the relation with rasmussen's lack of playtime that jamesherrell mentions, though.
(still... 4 times in 2012, Jesse?? Still no gaming in 2013??! Tsk-tsk-tsk! Smile

Note: I was going to write a neater example of lack of support to M44O, but that would go slightly off-topic, so I'll place it in an appropriate thread.

All,

My apologies. First, to rasmussen81. You are correct, I mistook your lack of playing for lack of involvement, and in that I was mistaken. I retract my comment and hope you will accept my apologies. I have apologized privately as well.

Second, I aoplogize to the online community at large. The forums exist to provide open dialogue and serve as a means to exchange information - of which I have none in this instance.

My comments were more born of the frustration I feel, having seen the level of involvement with DOW during beta testing and the early days of the game. It is now close to a year and half since they've issued any updates, other than adding the new scenarios that Gheintz created and several players tested. So to read an article in which the CEO says he has opted not to pursue further development (i.e. 'Overlord' version) because he feels it would not do justice to the tabletop experience strikes me as somewhat 'out of touch.'

I thoroughly enjoy Memoir '44 - both the tabletop and online versions, and plan to keep playing for years to come.

Now, if they could just get those pre-pubescent elf cartoons off the forum pages...

Apology accepted. No harm done. Just because I haven't played the game doesn't mean I don't want to; my absence from the Online game is not a protest or frustration with the game at all. I hope that the second part of the year will see me playing Online more often but we'll see what life brings.

I don't know that you need to apologize for caring about how the Online game is going. You don't need to have new information to post, so go ahead and share your opinion.

However, it is important to get the facts straight and often times that's what the forum is really good for. The CEO of Days of Wonder never said anything about not pursuing further development of Memoir '44 or the Overlord version. He never indicated that he didn't think they could do justice to the Overlord experience. That was Peiper21 (the OP) wondering if that was what was going on...

All that the CEO said was that the Ticket to Ride Team Asia map would not be created because the team play wouldn't work. So although it's fine to be frustrated that there haven't been updates, it's not fair to be upset with the CEO for something he never said.

Principle issue with Overlord online is that you need 8 players

How often do you see 8 players without games in the lobby?

Sam and a few others play Overlord using Vassal I believe, but that I assume has to be pre-planned and arranged. Not pick ups.

I don't want to sidetrack this conversation with a digression into Overlord, but since my name has been mentioned, I should give a few facts.

Yes, several times a year, I organize Overlord games on Vassal. Readers of this Forum know that I do take reservations in advance, but if there's an open seat, we do take walk-ins. And while it's not quite the same as being together at a real-world table, I think the social aspect of those games works very well. (I'm overdue for another one. Need to find a good time to do it.)

Back to the main point of this thread ... I hadn't heard about the Wired article before. I found it very enlightening. At marketing conferences, I hear people talk about building online communities, and when I log in here, I get to share in the experience of an exemplary one. In the article, I learned some other things that made me respect DoW all the more.

Thank you, Peiper!

Re:Interesting Article with DoW CEO Tue, 26 March 2013 23:35
Sorry I have been busy too and haven't had time to comment.

I must make it clear that that was just an inference on my part that perhaps a similar line of reasoning was happening with overload as with TTR asia. Namely that they didn't think that they could recreate the team aspect of working together on sides very well online for TTR asia so they hadn't pursued it yet.

I then tried to do my own reading between the lines and think that maybe something similar has been thought of for MM 44 overlord. But no the CEO didn't say at all like that. That was a complete inference on my part.

This probably didn't come off very well in my first post but I actually was very impressed with the CEO from the article. I felt a genuine concern from him to create memorable games and gaming experiences for all DOW customers. I just had the impression that if they're are going to do something they are going to make sure that they do it right.

Now of course there has some been some hiccups lately with MM 44 and I don't have any qualms with any frustrations that are felt in the community. I can understand the feelings of some it has been neglected. I didn't mean to stir up any feelings I just wanted to share what I thought was a cool article. So my apologies if I created a problem. Sad But I appreciate everyone's thoughts and ideas. That's why we have these forums right? Smile

As someone who plays both TTR and MM 44 online and who owns TTR Europe, Germany, & Switzerland and the base set for MM 44 and the eastern front expansion I have been very pleased with DOW. Sure there always things to improve on but overall I applaud DOW for having given me many fun hours of enjoyment with family and friends as I've played their board games.
