Out of Print Products (Winter Wars, Air Pack etc) Thu, 02 May 2013 13:55
Dear DOW,

I've just got into Memoir '44 and am enjoying it a lot, but being a completist I am a little disappointed by the products that don't appear to be scheduled for a reprint, namely Campaign Book 1, Hedgerow Hell, Tigers in the Snow, Air Pack and Winter Wars. I appreciate that the latter two are available as pdfs, but the chance not to get the figures, terrain hexes, cards etc is disappointing.

Would it not be possible to adopt the plan that GMT Games have and start a P500 system whereby when you receive orders for a predetermined number of the product (500 in their case) you can then reprint. This way we all win. Customers can obtain the out of print products they need and you, the publisher, guarantee you aren't out of pocket because, hopefully, you've set the target figure at a number ensuring a profit. Manufacture costs are obviously lower because you only have the print and production costs (no new artwork, editorial etc) so surely this idea could work well.

It seems a shame that elements of such a popular award winning game such as Memoir '44 should be allowed to disappear thus depriving your newer converts the full gaming experience.

Any chance you could give it some thought?

(Apologies if some of these expansions are scheduled for a reprint - if so, maybe someone could let me know)

Best wishes

They re-released some of the pieces from the out of print map expansions in the EP, so I gotta believe that with the outstanding support that DoW has given the game up to this point, that we'll see some of this stuff re-released down the road in consolidated expansions.

The units from the battles maps can all be acquired through the Equipment Pack, so that's good. And if I'm not mistaken, the battle map scenarios are all available online, so you should be able to set them up yourself.

Missing, of course, is the Combat Card deck, which was a nice addition to the game that gets too little attention (more on that below).

Winter Wars, yes, it's nice to have all the terrain ... PLUS, it came with a deck similar to the Combat Cards, but themed for winter play. Well, sort of themed for winter play. It's a fantastic idea that maybe could have used some very minor tweaks to really make it feel like it was made for winter combat.

Which leads me to a longtime wishlist expansion:

Urban Warfare.

The Combat Card deck + urban themed terrain tiles (streets, rubble, apartments, etc.) + scenarios = me a happy camper. I think there is a lot of potential in a simple themed pack like that. Maybe throw in some machine gun units, since people love getting units in their expansions.

I'd love to see the genuine PDF's of the battlemaps released, either as a gift Laughing or as a low-priced product in the store Very Happy , so those like me willing to have the OL scenarios printed, can have them all.

Regarding the Urban Warfare, I'm sure others will say exactly the same for the "Jungle Warfare" for the Pacific Theatre and for the "Desert Warfare" in the Med Theater. Therefore, you are right: there is a lot of potential with the Combat Cards.

Absolutely! Desert Warfare and Jungle Warfare are two that I daydreamed about being a natural extension of the idea.

I'd buy more G.I.s for the Online game if they fixed the errors and programmed more features like blowing up dams and bridges.

I've got enough official scenarios to play face-to-face to keep me interested this year.

But here's my 2 cents on what they should develop next for the board game. The standard board is 9 deep by 13 wide. The board seems too small for scenarios involving big tank battles on the East Front and North Africa. Operation Market Garden Battle Map is 11 deep. I say develop a kit that you put on each baselines to add 1 or 2 rows (depending on the scenario) and that increases the medal-holding spaces to 10. It would come with a booklet of scenarios, and it could be titled "Great Tank Battles" or some such.

Why not just use the Breakthrough board? It's already longer and gives way more room for tanks to move around. Smile

Thanks for all the comments, but I think we're getting off the subject which was the resurrection of the Out of Print material.

If the idea of a 'Print on Demand' policy isn't the way to go then maybe there is another option to make this out of print material available to all of us newly converted players.

Following on from the Equipment Pack, which is primarily an expansion containing OOP and new plastic models, maybe we could have a Command Pack which would contain all of the OOP cards such as the:

Breakthrough Pack and Winter Combat Cards from Winter Wars
Card Summary pack from the Air Pack (I think this includes the Air Sortie cards - if not they should be included)
Urban Combat Cards from Sword of Stalingrad
and any other cards that are currently unavailable and maybe, as someone suggested previously, new sets of Jungle and Desert Combat cards

That would take care of the plastic models and cards, so then we could have a Tactician's Pack which would cover all of the OOP cardboard such as:

Terrain hexes, unit badges, markers and obstacles from Winter Wars
Terrain hexes, unit badges, markers and obstacles from the Air Pack
A selection of extra 'useful' terrain hexes from all expansions to help scenario developers with their creations and Breakthrough/Overlord scenarios
Any other card pieces that are currently available
and lastly, a set of etched dice (as I've seen suggested somewhere) to eliminate wear and tear on the existing set.

Finally, maybe all of the scenarios from the OOP products could be made available on the Days of Wonder website. Forgive me if they already are, but I think Winter Wars may still be missing!

That should complete my 'wishlist' of all the OOP material in two handy expansions with hardly any extra production costs as most of the above has been printed already. And, in case you thought I'd forgotten the aircraft, I've discovered that alternative, unpainted airplane models are available from online miniature sites, so in theory, and a bit of practical help, Memoir '44 could be complete again!

Over to you for comments!

I think another thread said there were out of stock items as opposed to out of print ones. The Air Pack may be out of print, while Winter Wars and Overlord could be out of stock.

Personally, I think they shouldn't bring Overlord Pack back unless they do a redesign. Can you play Overlord scenarios with 1 base game and the Overlord Pack? No. Can you play Overlord scenarios with 2 base games and no Overlord Pack? Yes. Therefore OL Pack has a problem.

I tried that. I loved Operation Amherst and Operation Crusader and played the 4 Winter Wars Breakthroughs. If I didn't have the BT cards I'd have given up on it sooner, since it was frustrating to play without "On the Move" cards. It's a really long board game (time and space), and doesn't give me the satisfaction as playing a couple scenarios in the same length of time.

Along with the out of print stuff, I'd love to see the implementation of new terrain tiles, that exist in one enviroment but it's missing in others. For example, City Ruins for countryside/desert.

I'm pretty sure that many others will show up more tiles that are not present in all the fronts.

Cheers

It seems to me that DOW could do a kickstarter for the older packs and if the support isn't there it wouldn't have to be done. Then they know they wouldn't lose money.

I to am new to the board game and would like to get hold of the out of print items, pdf`s are no substitute for real cards, boards, terrain pieces and little plastic men! I have just ordered the equipment pack but cannot understand why they did not include the planes from the missing air pack? Just one of the frustrations of being a new board gamer was that when I bought Memoir 44 three weeks ago the local store had a brand new copy of the Air pack (they did not know it was out of print) at a reasonable price, being new I did not know either! When I went back a week later, it was sold Crying or Very Sad I have been kicking myself ever since.

I would buy Map Pack #1 and #2 and Campaign Book #1, and would absolutely pay a bit more than "justified".

When I bought the Air Pack PDF, I hated it. Because of the price for no cards and planes, and having to fumble together my own cardboard pieces. Better than nothing, but still a fluke.

I've been reading this thread and wanted to help. If you want a resource that shows what each expansion was and what it added to the game, download the Memoir 44 expansion list:
http://cdn.daysofwonder.com/uploads/userpages/272628/_5766.p df

I have all but CB2 and the bag, (and the first Christmas bonus stuff, not listed here).

This is still my favorite WWII game out there for playability in a short time frame of setting up and playing.

The breakthrough card deck is one of my favorites for M44. I use it with the standard board and it really changes things up, to me, for the good.

I downloaded the PDF of CB1 and was lucky enough to be able to get it printed and bound for free at work. Then I managed to pick up a hard copy (minus the boards and counters) for £8 at Salute so I was happy with that!

I've also managed to acquire Winter Wars thanks to the kindness of one of the lovely forum members here!

I dearly want the Air Pack though, because a) the book contains the updated versions of all the scenarios that had been printed to that point rejigged for the air rules, but most important of all b) the card deck, with cards for every type of terrain and effect in the game. A nice easy visual aid.

Now, I can understand that it might be too costly to do another run of the miniatures from the air pack because they were fully painted etc, but the cards alone surely they could re-do? I for one would pay for the card deck on its own.

It's tough because cash flow is restricted for me at present but I keep thinking I must buy an Equipment Pack and Breakthrough Kit soon before they go out of print and become stupidly expensive too! Sad

Update: finally it's MINE!

Yesterday, a year to the day after I secured my initial bargain entry into Memoir 44 at Warfare 2012 by picking up the game, Overlord, the Eastern Front and the Campaign bag all in mint condition for £30, I went one better when my mate dug up the Air Pack at the Warfare bring and buy for £15!

Knowing I'm a M44 nut and that the AP was something I've been searching for for ages he bought it straightaway and handed it to me when I arrived. It was all a mess of cards and bits inside when opened but when I had the chance to go through it properly it turns out to be 100% complete and in absolutely mint conditIon.

Can't actually believe my luck. So chuffed!
