World War Two Days Tue, 24 September 2013 02:56
Every September Rockford, IL hosts "World War Two Days," supposedly the largest WW2 reenactment in America. I try to get out there every year and take a few pics to share with yall - should be good inspiration for those of you thinking about painting your M44 pieces. Enjoy!

Part of the Allied motorpool...that's a glider-borne tank with a Stuart light tank (and others) behind it.

Soviet T34 -- this was an upgunned, late war T34/85 (for those of you noticing the size of that cannon). According to the reenactors, this one actually saw action in WW2 in Manchuria, and was a gift to the US in the 1980s. It's one of only a handful of T34s on US soil:

Very cool pictures.

As someone who grew up overseas and has no experience with reenactments, can anyone explain how they work? What rules do the people follow? How do they decide which side to be on? Do they practice all of this before, or just go out there and 'wing it'? How do they figure out that someone's been 'hit'?

Any insights are welcome! Very Happy

I believe the re-enactments are more theatre / drama than an actual game. They are performed for a live audience to reproduce a typical situation and follow authentic tactics but the 'gameplay' or scenario outcome is decided before hand so everyone gets to win sometimes.

At least this is how other historical re-enactments are organised.

I looked into joining a local airborne unit a few years ago, and it was actually kind of interesting. Their season basically divided into two parts - the tourist season and the competitive season. Tourist season (where my pics are from) is like AP said - just a performance, agreed upon outcomes, meant to please, entertain, and educate the crowd. But the competitive part of the season entails what they call "tacticals" - essentially, war games against other units, which are usually officiated and scored by judges or referees. These are not open to the public.

For most units, it's a considerable investment of time and money. Your kit has to be authentic (or authentic reproduction) and - often - specific to the year (so if your unit is from 1942, you can't have a weapon or parts of your uniform be from 1944). When I looked into it, it was going to cost well over $1,000 to get started with a weapon and uniform, although most units have guys with extra gear who are willing to lend you stuff until you decide if you want to make that type of commitment. They also do actual drill on some weekends.

At any rate, I was surprised when I first started going to watch this event - I expected a bunch of overgrown children and crazies playing guns in the woods (not that there's anything wrong with that!). What I found instead was a bunch of amateur historians eager to teach their areas of knowledge to the public. Most of them are really passionate about history and love to talk about it - for example, I was wondering aloud to my wife about the oversize cannon on the T34, and two random German troops walking the other way stopped and explained to me that it was an upgunned T34/85. Another guy in the machine gun pit pictured spent ten minutes explaining the weapon - everything from weight to rate of fire to tripod/bipod mounting. It was neat.

Awesome pictures, thanks! That airborne tank is a M-22 Locust, haven't seen one of these before.

Thanks for the insight into how these reenactments work. Sounds kind of fun if you have the money to put into it. I would love to see something like that some day but your pictures are a great substitute for now. Very Happy
