Please advise: Clarification on LOS rules (concealment and indirect fires) Sat, 16 November 2013 19:34
Good morning,

My wife and I were playing the Arracourt scenario and some questions came up.

Please provide any guidance you may have.

1. How far can individual units see on the board? Is unit LOS equivalent to their weapons range? So can infantry or armor only see 3 hexes unless the LOS is blocked?

2. Artillery has no LOS restriction; however, is an observer required to have LOS on the target? Artillery can shoot 6 hexes, but can the unit see that far through trees and over hills? Or if a target is behind a hill, may the artillery shoot at the target if there is no unit with LOS on it?

3. What is the criteria for units being spotted? If a unit moves through woods to the edge of the woods, is that unit immediately spotted by an enemy within range or must the concealed unit open fire first? Likewise if a unit moves into a town without any enemy observation, is that unit effectively hidden until it engages the enemy?

4. Where may I the rules that provide this guidance?

I would appreciate any directions and sources that can be provided. I have searched for references to provide more clarification regarding LOS; however, I have not yet found any clear guidance. I looked in the booklet but it did not address these issues. I looked online and in the forum, but I could not find any material that directly addressed my questions.

Respectfully,
Roger

Correct. Units don't need to see any further than they can shoot, so LOS rules don't extend past their range of fire.

Artillery doesn't need to see the units and unless the special rules say otherwise, Artillery can shoot over hills, trees, towns, etc. There are no observers required, unless the rules specify it.

The base game of Memoir '44 isn't that complex. If the enemy can see you (and you can see the enemy) either side can attack the other on their turn. Units are not hidden unless something is between them that blocks LOS. Your unit that moves into the woods or into the town can be attacked right away if the enemy is close enough. Don't forget that those terrain types do offer some protection, though, so your enemy Infantry units will have to be a bit closer than normal to attack you.

Check the Official FAQ for more help: http://www.daysofwonder.com/en/msg/?th=27505&start=0

You also might want to try out the Free Trial of the Online game: http://www.daysofwonder.com/online/en/#mo

Have fun and good luck! Cool

These questions would be better suited to the Memoir '44 forums, though, so in the future you'll find more info from that forum. Here's a link:

Thank you for the support. I will try the game out online to see if it clarify the issues.

The FAQs did not seem to provide any direct answers.

It is frustrating that these rules regarding the difference between range and LOS are not readily available. I do not want to over complicate the game, but it is really confusing.

Again thank you for your guidance.

Roger

Out of curiosity, why would it matter if units could see further than they can shoot? Artillery doesn't need to see anything to be able to fire at it and everyone has to see it to shoot at it.

Don't read too much into the rules and you'll be in good shape. If it doesn't say anything about needing to 'spot' a unit before you can attack it, that's because it doesn't matter; it's not that the rule was forgotten.

Memoir '44 is a simple game, which is why I think it's so great, so just play the rules as they are written and you'll be fine.

You might also find this useful. It is the Official Line of Sight example map to show when you can and can't see another unit.
