Pacific Winter Battles--The Aleutian Campaign Fri, 31 January 2014 00:22
On a thematic historical note, the Aleutian Campaign was a lesser known occupation by the Japanese on American territory and ground response by the U.S. sdnative has an excellent expert battle called "First Banzai", and I've posted "Advance on Hill X" to give a couple of winter battles between Japanese and U.S. troops. They are complete with heavy fog, Banzai attacks, snow, mushy tundra, freezing waters, and a killer whale or two. Check them out and enjoy. Appreciate any feedback or improvements. Keep your powder dry, comrades!

P.S. I've also come across Engineer Hill, by Turboheizer, an alternate version to First Banzai.

After digging in the SFTF archives just now, I found that Nygaard has 3 Pacific Winter battles on file between the Japanese and Chinese: "Delaying Action", "Huai River Part1" and "Huai River Part2". They aren't available online but worth checking out. Cool

I've also posted "Attu Island" on SFTF that gives an "overview battle" of the Attu Operation. I'd be happy to play it with anyone who's interested. Any of the three, in fact!

Hello Iron Gut,

I've noticed that you are really active on the M'44 forum and I read your messages with big interest, but I have a question:
Who is the bearded man on your avatar?
(just wondering)

Hoping to see you on the battlefield,
Erik.

That's a good question, Erik, and I don't have an answer. I was searching for bearded, Russian/Soviet generals and found him. Your question made me curious to resume my search to find out more about this portrait.

Looking forward to seeing you in the fray as well,

Iron Gut

That would be amazing to have some ancient Soviet general battling it out with us on M'44 online from his Russian country home. You never know, comrades... Rolling Eyes

So, Erik, he is an unknown veteran in "Portrait Of A Russian General Seated On A Bench 1882" by Ivan Nikolaevich Kramskoy

http://www.easyart.com/prints/ivan-nikolaevich-kramskoy/port rait-of-a-russian-general-seated-on-a-bench-1882-212382?utm_ campaign=4315&utm_source=posters_co_uk#212382-50-39-1
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ivan_Kramskoi

I guess he's a little pre-M'44 but I'll just consider him my military mentor from Mother Russia past Cool

Hello Iron Gut,

Thanks for the quick answer.
What an impressive photograph.
But I don't quite understand the "1882".

Erik,I think that was the year it was painted. I perceive an air of dignity as he rests from his years of service--fall leaves above his head reflecting his passing life, the flowers coming up through the bench slats representing some measure of peace that he has earned for his people...

Thanks. I agree. It is really well done. You should check out some of the other paintings by Ivan Kramskoy

The first time I noticed your avatar, I thought it was a Brit character actor dressed up for a role in a movie. His name escapes me now, but he was in a number of films in the 60s and 70s and sported a beard in a few pics.

As to the uniform, it looks a lot like what a doorman would wear. Of course, the fact that it dates back to the 1800s would explain why it is so different from those worn later on.

IGH, thanks for posting the info on the Aleutians Islands battles. I grew up in the Aleutians and am surprised to find battles developed for this remote front. I am looking forward to playing them and will post feedback.

"The Thousand Mile War" is a very good reference. It also reads well, note that it has a 5 star review on Amazon.

How fun that this opened a new window into your history! I'll check out the book you referred to.

I'm going to repost Advance on Hill X in the Pacific SFTF tab tonight.

Enjoy!

IGH, how long will Advance on Hill X be on the SFTF tab? I might need to accelerate my purchase of the expert mode if that scenario won't be there for very long.

I will leave it there for a while. And I encourage you to accelerate your purchase of expert mode play. Many of the extra scenarios are amazing! Just my input...

IGH, when I click on the SFTF tab it says I need to purchase the Expert. I will probably make that purchase in the next couple of weeks to play the Aleutian Islands battles and because I am playing a chronological Eastern Front scenario. We had to skip the Battle of Kiev (August 1941) but I am sure that it must exist in the Expert mode.

Plus, I want to get busy designing Soviet Naval Infantry amphibious assaults in the Crimea and the Baltic.

AD, you must have purchased a couple of sergeant packs, I guess. Well, go for the captain pack next time. Well worth it for designing and playing all those cool, new scenarios!

Sorry - this probably isn't the right place (I'm still trying to work out the system Embarassed) - but does anyone know and reccommend any put-together campaigns like nemesszilis for example...

Thanks very much! Smile

Incremental growth and learning is the key. I wasn't clear if you were asking for table top campaigns or online playable campaigns. If you want to ask about online campaigns, you can post a similar message on this forum...
