[Beta] Games ending with "Bad Version" Tue, 13 May 2014 21:31
I've frequently had online matches have to be aborted due to an error message when I try to go back into the game. This happens mostly with multi-session games, but I've had it happen in single-session games when the app crashes too.

The error message is "You cannot resume this game because: bad version"

As far as I know, everyone in the game has been on the same app version the whole time, so I'm not sue what the error is supposed to be.

Is anyone else seeing this? (I'm on iPad.)

I'm seeing this too, but only on one game, started by Holmes108 and with bjhomer.

Hmmm, there could be something fishy there, we'll investigate. Are you sure these were not games that had been started before the version of Monday ?

Normally, everyone should be on the same page now - provided everyone upgraded of course: on Android or on the iPad, this is a voluntary action. On Steam, it's automatic.

I seem to be having some of the same trouble, but I haven't been able to verify if we're all playing the same version. Once I can make sure we're using the same version, if I still have the same problem I'll be sending in a Bug Report.

For others having this issue, send in a report using this form: http://www.daysofwonder.com/en/contact/smallworld-beta and be sure to give them as much detail as you can!

What device are you using?
If you know what device your opponent is using.
Who you were playing against, what time the game was at, exactly when you got the error message, what version you're using.
Anything that might help them pinpoint the problem should be included.

Good luck to everyone! Smile

I've seen this in a number of cases, but the most recent one happened just this morning; 2 human players + 3 bots. Both the human players took their turns, then 2 bots. The third bot just got stuck, wouldn't take his turn. I left the game and tried to come back in, but got the error message instead.

It seems unlikely that either of he human players would have updated versions in that short period. I know I did not.

Yeah, I'm quite sure it happened with at least 2 games I hosted that were unable to begin due to the error. They were with people I had played with in the beta prior, and there didn't seem to be an update to the software in between.

Tried to host 2 more games in the last couple of days, and again once everyone joined, I get a bad version when trying to start.

The issue could be that 'by the time everyone joined' means that someone is still on a previous version. I suspect that if people take very long to join the game they're actually on a different version.

Morning all,
I have just found that the latest update (1170.962d3465) has resurrected at least one "bad version" game (4p with bjhomer, Holmes 108 and a bot). However it still crashes when I try to take my turn.

I've submitted a report but thought a forum discussion on resurrected "Bad Version" games might help the team track this down.

I updated the app before I left for work this morning, and just went to run the game now, and got prompted for a 2.5.0-1182-a5cda36a update. (I didn't download yet as I'm on mobile data).

I'm wondering if there's sometimes a delay, or staggered release that is causing the issue, where some people are on different versions and not seeing the update notification as promptly as others.

Edit: Although interestingly, I'm still on 1170, yet I'm able to load up the game, watch the moves, and see it waiting for you.. so that might blow my theory out of the water.

I'm on 1182 now and still seeing exactly the same as I reported above, so I don't think it's actually down to versions.

I'm afraid that doesn't prove that Versions isn't the issue. If you're on version 1182 and the person you're trying to play with is using a different version, you'll get the error.

Hello everyone,

Some important information about this infamous error, following our findings.

First of all, you should know that the error message itself is misleading. The problem is not an issue about version numbers. The problem is that the game data is corrupted, including the game version number - hence the message.

What happened is that in some network conditions (lags...), there could be de-synchronization of data which resulted in a more or less corrupted game state. After that, you would get this message, or you would be able to load the game but you would crash quickly afterwards.

The bug was fixed in build 1182 or higher (today's release).

Here is what you should do: if you resume a game, and you get this "bad version" error message or you crash after a couple of actions, it means that your game is dead. There is no use to try any further. Withdraw from the game to remove it from your list of games in progress.

New games that you create starting from today won't have this problem, since we fixed the bug - which was really tricky to find, as you can imagine!

Thanks for your attention,

Yann
