The new printed pocket Encyclopedia of Small World that is coming out this year states the following:

"Barbarian tokens sent back to your hand as a result of your opponents' Conquests may be redeployed normally, however. As such you must be careful to keep these separate, in your hand, from any unused Barbarian tokens you were not allowed to redeploy during your turn."
(I know it thanks to rasmussen81)

I have noticed though, that the digital game does not provide the opportunity to do so. Neither version 2.0 nor version 2.5.

Being a huge fan of Small World I just can't leave it at that, I want to know the truth. Either the Encyclopedia is misleading or the digital Barbarians are programmed in a wrong way. What is the official rule?

I'm not the official word on this, but we were very careful to check each rule in the Encyclopedia and we worked specifically on Barbarians to make sure it followed Philippe Keyaerts' wishes. The Encyclopedia is correct. Smile

Having given a thought to it, I am inclined to believe that the Encyclopedia is correct, for redeploying the defeated Barbarians fits their logic perfectly.

Barbarians are numerous - that is their advantage, but not good at strategy - that is their limitation, which makes them balanced. Having conquered some regions they can't figure out how to redeploy the troops in order to get a better hold of them, or they just don't care, because they are "Barbarians", they are wild, you know.

BUT! When they lose a region, the remaining troops that had to retreat (or run away), are smart enough to join the remaining tribes and help them defend the regions that they occupy.

So, let us hope that the digital Barbarians will be fixed.
