I'm starting a thread to see which is the preferred knight of choice. In any given game with/without the traitor, experienced/inexperienced group etc Who would it be?

Sir Tristan for me.

Playing any knight at the best of my skill is the challenge within the game, so I gladly take any one that is randomly dealt to me.
I think that Sir Bedivere is very strong (having a useful, powerful and repeatable skill that can be be very effective even if you're the Traitor). If I must choose between the "original seven", I opt for Sir Tristan simply because I like a lot the miniature. Smile

I am also happy to play whatever I'm dealt to the best of my ability. However, the one I most often miss when he is not around is King Arthur - so I guess he might be my favorite.

The one I always miss having around is Galahad. I've never played with Bedivere, and don't even know what he does, so I'm not sure about him.

He can discard a card from his hand to draw a new card once per turn.

I like Tristan.

Galahad is pretty cool, but only really so when Arthur is also on the board with him. Even when they are both around, I have more fun being Tristan Smile

---Korhil

EDIT: I had orignally posted Palamedes, tho that was before I had it pointed out to me I was playing with a rule wrong - causing me to over evaluate his strength.

Re:Favorite Knight Tue, 30 August 2005 08:48
In my opinion the only knights, who are not that powerful, are Sir Percival (his special power is only important if the next black cards decides about winning or losing a quest) and Sir Palemedes (because he always must run to different quests before they are completed, in order to get the extra life point - that meens wasting a lot of precious time).

I really like King Arthur joining the group, because his ability to exchange cards is very valuable. Sir Gawain is not bad as well - drawing a lot of white cards in Camelot he can be important to complete some group or combat quests. At the end of the game he can stay at Camelot to fight siege enginges. Therefor I like Sir Kay, too, because he has a great advantage in combat quests and when fighting siege enginges.

I think my most favorite knights are Sir Galahad and Sir Tristan, because they can perform up to three actions in one turn (when spending a life point), which can be very interesting.
Galahad is even more powerful when King Arthur supports him with special cards.

In our last games Tristan and Galahad have often brought victory to a quest or prevented defeat by using their special power. For example Sir Galahad may move to a quest, spend a life point to play a card on it and can additionally call Merlin. This really can decide about winning or not losing a quest.

Ordinarily, I agree. We did play one game where the knight right after Sir Percival won Lancelot's Armor (where he could look at two Black Cards and discard one). This situation was more powerful because now a really bad card could be put down, sending an unspoken message for Lancelot's Armor to get rid of a card.

The question asked after the game was whether it was really more powerful or did it only seem that way. Our analysis was that it was better this way, because Lancelot's Armor had the same benefit, but now it could be used more often or more judiciously (instead of a seige engine or life point).

It might just be my perception but that game saw more "critically bad" cards discarded. Of course, this doesn't take into account what happens if one of them is the traitor.

My favorite knight is King Arthur. I've seen a few quests won because he passed the right card (usually a Grail card or a high fight card to the Dragon Quest) on to another knight.

Hello, perso my favorite Knight is Pelemedes (Palomides in french)

In game, he can be play exactly the same as Tristan who return to camelot after finishing a quest in 99% of case. So i find Pelemedes more polyvalent than Tristan.

So it is a background choice.

My favorite Power is Bedivere's one.

Actually, there are significant cases in which Palamedes cannot be played exactly the same as Tristan. Due to the nature of Tristan's power, he can effectively take three heroic actions in a single turn. (For example, Tristan can move, take a quest-specific action and play a special white card all in the one turn. This combo can be a quest-saver when a quest is nearing completion in evil's favour and Sir Tristan has a Merlin.) Sir Palamedes does not get that flexibility.

In situations in which it is more important to avoid drawing black cards and placing siege engines than to get another knight into action quickly, Sir Palamedes's power is arguably better.

Overall, though, I find Sir Tristan's power to be more useful than Sir Palamedes's, partly for that increased flexibility and partly because it gains a heroic action even when the quest the knight attempts does not complete before he has to leave.

Sir Palemedes is by far my favorite, especially as the traitor. He can jump around to various quests for good or bad and regain the life points needed to continue doing the same. He may not have the most usefull ability but he is very versitile.

I'd have to say Galahad. The ability to play a sepcial white card for free each turn is quite a powerful ability.

Tristan is a close second... but since his free move is limited to leaving Camelot, I had to go with Galahad as my first choice.

I vote King Arthur, because there's someone else in my group who always plays Galahad (we pick our knights), and being the King is a lot of fun...I also like Palamedes, however, because he can complete the little quests on the main board and stock up on life points, which can be really useful when you need a knight to go against the dragon (huge chance of failure, but Palamedes can take the blow and keep fighting). As a group player, Palamedes is not very useful except in that his power allows him to draw fewer black cards in times of desperate need. Gawain is my second runner up because his power lends itself very easily to fighting wars, which I enjoy.

Would have to go with Tristan first - speed being of the essence in various situations - although we have found on repeat playing that having Arthur around is handy and using Percival towards the end of tight games can be the difference between drawing that final siege engine or not!

I am surprised that many people like Tristan. His ability seems a little limited to me, but maybe I have just not played him enough to develop an appreciation for him. Normally I would say Galahad, because his special ability is awesome - EXCEPT that every time I have ever played him I have only held two special cards in my hand the entire game.

So I will have to go with Bedivere, his ability to cycle cards is great. I have seen him complete the Grail quest solo and he does a good job on the solitary quests, even if Arthur is not feeding him cards. The biggest problem with Bedivere is that he tends to run out of cards in games that I have played.

Re:Favorite Knight Fri, 19 October 2007 11:34
Palamedes, Gawain, and Tristan don't do anything for me. Basically, the benefit of their powers seems to be to speed them up. They can all pull their weight, but I would never choose to play one of them.

Percival is a wild card. When I play him, I seldom get much use out of his power. But often, when I draw the black card that ends the game, I could have kept us alive a little longer had I been Percival. So I wouldn't call him weak. But it seems like he shouldn't be the one to claim Lancelot's Armor, and I always want it, so I would not choose him either.

I always feel more optimistic about victory when someone draws Arthur or Galahad, although I'm not especially jazzed to play either of them.

Kay is one I enjoy quite a bit, both mechanically and socially. He's good for staking claims-- "Oh, let me do that one, my power makes me the best at that." Playing Kay can help make others more comfortable with you having Excalibur (to make the best fighter even better for when the siege engines are closing in) or the armor (because he has the best chance to win that important solo combat quest.) And it builds a lot of goodwill and trust to knock out 2-3 catapults smoothly and efficiently. It also feels very cool when you continue fighting into the teeth of high black cards where others would abandon the quest or Merlin them away. Most of all, though, I like it that he has a good use for those poor Fight cards.

But my overall favorite has to be Bedivere. Sure, you pull lots of 1s with his power (his nickname at our table is now "Ace"), but the ability to get good out of any bad card while simultaneously performing any action or quest makes me feel like I'm never wasting a turn. I also like to have Bedivere to keep him out of the hands of any potential traitor (unless I'm the traitor, mwah ha ha)!

I agree, Bedivere is one of the best characters for loyal knights and of course he is definitively the best knight if you are the traitor Twisted Evil I think he is the only knight that can use his special power constantly without raising suspicion - as long as he isn't complaining about his cards too much.

Re:Favorite Knight Mon, 29 October 2007 22:46
I'd rank the knights like this Most to Least Useful:

1 King Arthur - his ability really shines the brightest in the group as long as he's not the traitor and he's getting a decent variety of cards in hand. Even a beginner can make use of him as well or a traitor can really cause mayhem.
2 Sir Tristan - consistently effective ability that a beginner or traitor won't be able to utilize though.
3 Sir Kay - another consistent ability that works best in fighting seige weapons, but is apt to be a victim of his card draw.
4 Sir Gawain - very middle of the road ability, but better with certain combinations of other knights that can be more offensive like Palamedes or Kay when he's squatting at Camelot.
5 Sir Galahad - combined with Arthur he's able to fully use his ability to the max, otherwise it's a bit random but great for a beginner to utilize.
6 Sir Bedivere - his ability seems overrated by the rest on here, it often seems he discards and redraws nothing better. Which will often times run the White deck out quickly and reshuffle those nasty black cards back in the group. Good abiltiy when he's stuck out on a Quest and hoping for a random draw of something he needs.
7 Sir Palamedes - like Tristan, his ability requires experienced timing and moves, which is less functional throughout the game. He'd be much higher rated if he didn't have to worry about going down to 1 life at times with Morgan's lose 1 life card in the mix.
8 Sir Percival - good ability in the middle of the game when you don't have Lancelot's armor and you want to dodge a super nasty black card, but overall he has little advantage compared to any of the other knights during the length of the game.

That's just the way this Knight sees it...

Obviously this is a non-scientific poll, but it's still an interesting result. I wouldn't have been surprised to see Arthur or someone take it all. Don't think of it as a three-way tie for first; it's more of a first string and second string situation.

I'm voting Sir Tristan for this one.

The abilty to move and do a quest action saves so many life points, as well as speeding up quest completion. It's one of the most used and most useful powers there is.

And he's purple.

Sir Tristan and Sir Galahad are my favorites, too. They are very powerful because they can perform up to three actions in one turn (when spending a life point).

When you play with the new travel cards of "Merlin's company" Sir Tristan will not be that powerful any more. Same for Sir Palomides, the expansion and the travel deck constricts his special ability.
