Ticket 2 Ride Online?
|
Mon, 05 April 2004 03:08

|

Is Days of Wonder planning on making an online version of this game? That would be HIGHLY exciting, as I bought it yesterday, played it twice, and fell in love with it. I remember hearing something about an online version of Pirate's Cove, but haven't heard anything in a while, so I'm not sure how long it'll take, but I'd still like to have some hope =). However, in the improbable event that y'all haven't considered it, I would support an online version and request its creation. Thanks for everything else y'all've given us, DoW.

Two Player Rule Variation
|
Tue, 20 July 2004 21:50

|
 |
Ticket To Ride Two Player Rule Variation:
Variation:
This two player variation has each player using two sets of cars.
Rules:
Each player chooses two sets of train cars.
Turn order example: player1 red, player2 green, player1 black, player2 blue.
Each player keeps their train and destination cards seperate, and are played as two seperate players.
As in a 4 player game, use the double routes between cities.
Special rule: Each player may use their trains together on a multi leg trip to complete their destination cards. You may not combine your two colors on a single route between two cities.
Scoring for victory conditions: Combine points for each players two train colors to determine the victor.
Example: Player 1(red and black) has a destination card for red from Calgary to Salt Lake City. There are four red cars placed down from Calgary to Helena and three black cars placed down from Helena to Salt Lake City. He has completed the destination card and receives 7 points since his red player has 50% or more of red completing the destination. If player 1's black pieces owned the destination card, the black player would have scored half, only 3 points for the destination since they had less then 50% of the destination. Just as before, negative points are scored for routes not made.
Results:
We have played with these rules quite a bit and with different people and is a well balanced game. They work great as a fun variation. A bit more thinking is involved but is perfect for those that like an extra level of strategy. Four player team play can also be used with this concept.

How to report a bug
|
Wed, 13 October 2004 18:02

|
 |
Hi,
With the release of the beta version of Ticket To Ride online, you might find some bugs, or things that don't work as they should.
To help us sort the issues, and fix them, we'll require you to do formalize your bug reports:
Brief explanation of the bug (1 line max)
Login name
Platform type (pc, mac, ...)
Operating System name and version
Type of Java Virtual Machine and version
Date, Hours (and timezone) when the bug occured
Players present in the game
Longer explanation of the problem
Steps to reproduce the problem if reproducible
Can you reproduce the problem if you restart your computer and come back ?
Java console extract
Once done, send it to support@daysofwonder.com.
Unfortunately failure to indicate any of the above will compromise our ability to solve the issue.
How to get a Java Console:
On MSIE, with Microsoft VM:
Go to Tools -> Options -> Advanced and check the 3 checkboxes related to Java
Restart IE
Go and play
Upon apparition of the bug/problem, go to View -> Java Console
Extract the content, ZIP it and send it to support@daysofwonder.com
On any browser with the Sun VM:
Go to Setting Panels -> Java Plug-in
In the basic tab, ativate the Console
Re-Launch your browser
Go and play
Upon apparition of the bug/problem, fire the Java Console (different options depending on your os/browser combination)
Extract the content, ZIP (or any compression format) it and send it to support@daysofwonder.com

Thanks for your attention,

A few improvement suggestions
|

There should be a rule for when someone wishes to concede. There are a few times when continuing is painful (such as when blind luck cripples you; rare, but it happens). I suggest the game continues as is (tracks stay, etc.), but that player "passes" every turn.
Is there any way to make it more clear who owns which paths? The trains are maybe too small.
There needs to be a timer, preferably chess-clock style, but possibly a minute timer.
A "train horn" sound button would be great for when a group wants to get the attention of one of their players. While waiting for someone to join my game, or come back from being away, I want them to be able to get my attention.
How about more maps?

Possible bug
|
Mon, 01 November 2004 14:59

I noticed this a few versions back, and I don't know if it's been fixed since then:
1) Create a game
2) Start the game (we had 4 players)
3) Before anyone has picked tickets, have someone quit
4) Have everyone resume
5) At this point it's the first turn of the game, but everyone has been forced to accept their initial deal of 3 tickets (instead of maybe keeping only 2).

Noticed this today.
If the first 5 cards available for selection contain 3 wilds, they won't be flushed until after the first player has drawn their first card.
Amusingly, that first card can be from the deck and they'll still update.

End of beta coming soon - IMPORTANT
|
Sun, 07 November 2004 17:15

|
 |
Hello everyone:
The test period ("beta") of the game is going to finish in a few days. We still have to polish a few details before we can switch to "1.0".
Our experience shows that every time we switched one of our on-line games to 1.0, there were some "side-effects" that would raise some questions and frustration from a few users who had not understood our on-line games policy. That's why we would like to inform everyone in advance of what is going to happen.
Scores and ranks of people who played until now will be preserved.
Until now, any newcomer can use the game with full "player" privileges: creating new tables and being ranked - even if he does not have any Ticket to Ride access code registered under his account. This will not be the case after the 1.0 switch. Every newcomer will need a Ticket to Ride code to benefit from "player" privileges. Without a code, he will still be able to play, of course, but with some limitations. This is exactly identical to the way all our other on-line games have been working.
The famous "side effect": in the past, some users entered their Ticket to Ride access code, and then played to our other on-line games, such as Gang of Four Online. Since Ticket to Ride Online did not exist yet, they could enjoy full player privileges with these other games, as a compensation for their patience. When the game will go 1.0, they will automatically become "guests" on these other games, unless they also have codes for these. So don't be surprised if you are not ranked at Gang of Four Online anymore. This is "normal".
As promised, users who entered their Ticket to Ride access code will see their Ticket to Ride Online subscription start only at the date of the 1.0 switch.
Do not hesitate to post your questions on this thread.
All the technical team thanks you for your participation!

Beep!

Mon, 22 November 2004 10:20

This game badly needs an alert beep. It is very annoying when people have long turns, or go away entirely, because they've forgotten about the game. But even though this annoys me, I've done it myself a few times when multitasking. I think a simple reminder beep when its your turn would do wonders for improving attention. You could include a checkbox if this annoys some people.

It would be nice if there was someway to publicize the "resume game" feature, so people know it exists and use it when a game is accidentally interrupted. i've been in a couple of games that ended prematurely (like getting kicked by a bug) and then people join other games, presumably because they don't know about the resume game button. telling people about it, like maybe on the "game ended because" message might help. also, a way to talk to people directly would be nice.

A tiny restriction in the online game
|
Fri, 17 December 2004 13:44

|
 |
In the online game, it is not possible to make any combination of wagon+locomotive we want. For instance, if you have N+ black cards and want to claim a N-length route with a least 1 black card, you are forced to fill every space with black cards.
A priori, one can think useless to use a locomotive while you can play a wagon instead. But it is not. The very point is: when a player claims a route with X colorful wagons + Y locomotives, every other player is sure that the first player doesn't have anymore wagon of the color he has just played. While I can admit this is not an information easy to use, I can imagine some situations where it is useful to know that kind of thing. On the contrary, on table game, you can imagine to bluff your opponent claiming, for instance, a 2-length black route with 1 wagon + 1 locomotive, in order that opponent(s) does not fear anymore about black routes.
On the other hand, this restriction enhances the usability of the online game, since claiming routes is an easy drag-n-drop.
[Does this point of rule have already been discussed elsewhere?]

Left in game with Bot
|
Tue, 21 December 2004 00:00

|
 |
The fun of this online gaming is playing against human players. I joined a game with a player who will remain nameless (but I won't be joining his games again), who had set up a three player game. After I joined he quit the game, the bot instantly started a two player game leaving me with the option of playing two-player with a bot or leaving and losing Karma.
Any way out of this?

Another really nice thing would be to give everyone four different ratings for games of 2,3,4 or 5. Comparing someone who plays only 2 player games to someone who plays only 4 or 5 player games is kinda silly. They're just much different games requiring much different strategies.

Timeout at game start

Any chance of shortening the time-out at the start of game while players are choosing their tickets? I understand it's longer than the one mid-game to allow players time to make their decision and load the game, but frankly it's way too long. Frequently, or at least often enough that it's noticable, a player joins the game and then disappears and everyone else has to sit around for a really long time before the dumbbot finally kicks in. I think kicking a couple of minutes off it would still allow enough time for legitimate concerns while reducing the wait for players who don't join games and then stare out the window for hours.

I've printed this expansion from the website and I have several questins about the rules:
-Engineer - I understand that first (in first round) I have to play this card and in second I can choose one ticket from the pile, but how many times can I do it?
-Tycoon - is it better to play +/- 10 if the objective was made? or only +10?
-Station Agent - most cioties? counting one, by one, am I right?
thanks in advance for all replies

Scrolling in lobby
|
Fri, 27 May 2005 23:14

|
 |
This is a very strange problem, indeed.
It seems that at times when I want to scroll through the list of people in the lobby or the games being played that the scroll bar will randomly (?) jump elsewhere, probably to the top, then MAYBE return to where my cursor had it. This happens both when I'm dragging the bar and using the buttons to scroll.
So, when I'm trying to see who's in the lobby and who's playing, this makes it very difficult and sometimes impossible during peak times.
HOWEVER, what makes this especially strange is that I haven't found anything systematic about it. I started to write this post after having an especially frustrating episode with this problem, but would pop back to the game every once in a while. I watched one game and when it was over I tried to get it to happen again. This time, everything worked fine. No jumping or anything, whether or not I have a name highlighted.
So, if there's any sort of code telling the windows to refresh, can that be done away with?

This past Sunday, we held the first Ticket to Ride Tournament at Dr. No's Comics & Games. Even though it was a slow Sunday for the store, we still had 9 participants in the tournament. 2 preliminary rounds were played to determine our four finalists:
Sarah Blagaich
Michael Brown
Richard Turner
Trish (sorry - I didn't get your last name!)
Sarah capped two wins in the preliminary round with a final victory in the championship round to win the tournament. She took home the prized pewter train scoring marker. Congratulations Sarah!
Next Days of Wonder Events in Atlanta will be a Memoir '44 tournament at Dr. No's coming up on August 28th followed by another TTR tournamnent and a variety of demos at Dragon*Con 2005!

Mind Games
|
Tue, 09 August 2005 13:47

|
 |
Hullo,
Now, I've done some thinking this weekend. How was it possible that I was ranked 25 with 1666 points at the beginning of last week and lost more than 70 points at the end of it? Then, with Tjandjahall's and Pilke's interesting comments about chess and dogs (which you can read in the 2nd Tournament 4th Round thread), I came to a conclusion...
Sure, when you play TTR you deal with factors as skilled players, lucky ticket drawers and getting the right colors at the right time and stuff. But TTR is really a mind game. Yes, a victorious match begins in your head.
When I was losing points last week I became obsessed with regained them. I didn't play for fun anymore. I didn't even greet my opponents anymore (something I normally always do). Cowardly I avoided the top players and was trying to defeat some "easy" opponents, even desperately engaging in Battle Royals (4 players), hoping I would regain my points fast. After every win/loss I would check the established rankings and see where I stood and how many points I would still need to go to the next ranking page. And why? I am still better than over more than 4000 other players here.
But as you can clearly see at my ranking, playing like that got me nowhere.
But now I get it...
Some people would say that the glass is half empty, while others would say it's half full. Who would be the happier party do you think? It's just basic psychology, people...
If I see a really hot girl and I want to ask her out, what kind of mental approach would help me? "Boy, this girl is so hot. I'm going to ask her out, but I'll bet she says 'no'." Or: "Cute girl... just like all the others here. Man, does she even know how lucky she is that I even consider asking her out?"
Well? I think I make my point here.
If you're not psyched-up about a match, if you think you are going to lose because you let yourself be intimidated by your opponent: don't even bother. You will start with half your energy and you will make those fatal mistakes.
Some players are expert in mind games. Some play with intervals. Others bluff by claiming routes they don't really need so you'll think they have super tickets. And some (like me, hihi ) talk too much during a game in order to distract an opponent. It's all in the mind...
Amazing stuff.

In both Europe and USA maps recent games have been plagued by instances where one player takes their go, but the next player doesn't see it and can't take their go. It sometimes sorts it out if everyone exits and restarts, but sometimes the game won't restart either. If restarting sorts it out it usually goes wrong again in a couple of turns.
Is anyone else getting this?

strategie against blocking ?
|
Thu, 08 September 2005 04:34

|
 |
At the moment I'm playing against someone called Calenodian. This person does not like me blocking his tracks. As a revenge he decided to play the following strategie:
If it is his turn, he waits 2 minutes to get replaced by a Dumbot. After the Dumbot took his place and performs its move, he takes over his chair and let me wait 2 minutes again. This 'strategie' has been played for some rounds and I guess he will continue this till the end of the game.
Personally, I do not bother. I have the whole night and can do other things in the meanwhile. But I can imagine that such strategie can be annoying for others. Is there a way to protect other players for persons who use this way of playing TTR ? Of course, if you all object against blocking then I will keep my peace.
Thanks a lot.
This is my first posting btw.

Dragon*Con Ticket to Ride Tournament Report
|
Thu, 22 September 2005 16:10
|
 |
Since it's been three weeks since Dragon*Con, I figured it was high time I post my report from the Ticket to Ride Tournament held over that weekend.
In total, we 17 entrants in the tournament who had to play two qualifying games either Saturday evening, Saturday night or Sunday morning. The competition was fierce with the top five tournament scores advancing to the final. When the dust had cleared, we had our five finalists:
Shelby Rawles
Nick Crocenzi
Eddie Maise
Andre Metelo
Kevin Marchetti
Andre, unfortunately, was not able to attend the final so we had our final four in a winner take all match. The competition could not have been tougher, but in the end, we had our Dragon*Con champion:
NICK CROCENZI
Congratulations Nick and nice job! As a note to DoW, I took a number of pictures both of the TTR tournament. If you would be interested in me sending along any of them, please let me know.
