  Missing Terrain Wed, 23 June 2004 04:24
I finally got my hands on Memoir '44 and love it but something very strange - I don't have enough river hexes to put together Pegasus Bridge.

I tried all sides of all the hexes and just don't have enough. I haven't lost any. I'm wondering if I didn't get enough terrain or was supposed to get two different terrain boards and got two of the same terrain boards.

Anyone else have this problem?

A lot of folks have thought this, but found they actually do have enough river hexes. In the picture it shows a hex with a perfectly straight river going from one hex side to the opposite hex side. But a number of the "straight" river hexes are really curved. They still match up with the straight river hexes (they aren't actually bends in the river), but they look different.

Lay out all your river hexes and check. You should have 8 completely straight river hexes and 6 that are curved but still have the river going from one hex side to its opposite that match up with the completely straight ones. Then there are 6 hexes with river bends that change the direction of the river.

But if you don't have a total of 20 river hexes, then you would be missing some.

Bilben is correct. We used some artistic license by making some of the straight rivers into straight "wavy" rivers, which simply makes the game look nicer, and has no impact on play.

Since we did not want people to struggle with matching every single piece down to its most minute detail (the same issue exists with towns, but curiously that one bothers no one apparently), we used the same hex symbol for straight rivers across each scenario.

It has no impact whatsoever on game play (a river hex is a river hex).

Sorry for the confusion this seems to create.

Okay, thanks for the response - at work now but will check that tonight. I did end up using the wavy rivers instead of straight, but still didn't have enough to make the whole river on one side and the "pond" in the middle. But I will check tonight.

Thanks! Very Happy

txaal,

I had the same exact problem. The hexes aren't like they were in Battle Cry. In BC, if you were to see "woods" on one side of the terrain piece, you were able to know and find "hills" on the other side. M44 has a random pattern. We always end up having to flip over other terrain hexes to find the "missing" terrain hexes and they're "slippery" too!! It'll take a while to get used to it but they're there.

Game on!!!

If you follow the order described in the "set-up order" box next to the scenario map, you will find your life much easier Wink

It's not quite a random pattern, it is simply that the numbers of different terrain types do not match. This is why in the instructions for setting up a scenario, we greatly encourage people to follow the suggested order in the terrain sidebar next to each scenario, from top to bottom.

I had a similar problem, but found the reason. Some of the river tiles are backprinted on the "town" tiles. If I deploy all the rivers, I can't deploy all the towns. I had to use a "village" style instead. Quibble, I know.

That's exactly why you have to follow the "set-up order" described in the scenario.

In the case of Pegasus Bridge, if you start by collecting all the rivers as indicated, then you will be fine for the next steps. If you start by collecting villages, there is a good chance that you will be screwed. Wink

So, you're saying there IS a shortage of either town or river tiles?

no there is no shortage. it is just that if you do not lay out the terrain types in order, as listed, you may find your self flipping over previosly laid out tiles to get the terrain type you need. Everything you need is included in the game.

I sent an email to DOW about the river tiles and the "stone" village tiles. There replay was they wanted the rivers to have a "visual variation". That is why the through in some curved rivers and wooded villages. All of the scenario's show straight rivers and stone villages in there setup maps. Dave

The river hexes I can see as mere eye candy, but the differences between stone and wooden buildings seem to itch for a house or scenario special rule. Razz
