Epic or CtA? Sat, 08 December 2007 18:50
Hey guys,

I want to buy one of these two "game rules" expansions, but I can't afford to buy both right now.

I just wanted to know which one you all thought would be most rewarding to buy, not having the other? (I know this is more of an opinion than anything, but that is what I am looking for)

Epic seems like a great buy if you're more into the big involved games (which I love). But CtA seems to add game mechanics that add a lot of depth, not to mention customization options (which I also love).

Also, I want to buy marauders, because the goblins need some serious help from the main game. Would this make the goblins too powerful, without offsetting with another dwarven expansion? If so, which dwarven expansion is best to buy?

Thanks for your input!

Well, I do not have CtA but I did recently get Epic.

I really like the expanded battlefield. It adds much to the tactical aspect of the game. Both cavalry and archers "come to their own".

But, while I am by no means disappointed in th Epic system - it is great, there are not a whole lot of scenarios with it. You can get some more in the online scenarios here at DOW. Also, note that the Epic rules allow for integration of CtA into Epic.

So, bottom line: If I had to choose with what I know now, I think I would get the CtA first, but then get Epic as soon as I can afterwards. I think CtA will give more versatility when using Epic, as well as any other supplimets you may get (I also have 100 years war and plan to get some others soon). Otherwise their usefulness is limited to the scenarios that came with them and whatever ones you find posted. I think you almost need CtA to make the other suppliments worth it.

But, CtA is a little difficult to find right now, but that is being addressed, as I understand it.

Mogrim

Hope this helps (Even though I have both). CtA allows one to have random setups using a deck of cards (it's main strength) plus introduced the specialist cards that have been in every expansion. (except in Epic, which I think was released 1st or 2nd expansion for BL).

Epic allows you to use the other side of your board with an additional board. And thus the board is bigger / wider. And thus you can get up for 4 people to play on it (6 if you allow for commanders). Reluctant allies is introduced here - and personally is probably the best way to go for 4 player games. Yes epic can be played with 2 as well.

Thus if you like variety, go with CtA. Otherwise Epic isn't bad either. Like Jon said, CtA might be hard to find since they are trying to produce more but if you do a little search on the Internet you probably can find it somewhere.

I think I would go with CtA first and then try to squeeze in Epic later. I think CtA will give you more variety now than Epic will. Plus CtA makes it a little easier, though not necessary, to implement the "trrop" expasnion sets like Marauder.

While Epic is neat, I don't think it is as supported right now. (Which is one reason having CtA first is better asd it allows you to generate more Epic scenarios). If you wait on this until your next purchase, you may see more support then.

Thanks guys,

I've read a lot of your posts, and I value your opinion. I think I will try to get my hands on CtA first. What is this problem with card backings though? Is this going to be an issue if I buy CtA right now?

What kind of support does Epic need? Are you referring to the questions that everyone has regarding how the rules interact with CtA and other expansions?

The backs on all Specialist Cards released after CtA has had a different back. It's no problem if playing the game as written. Only a question of aestetics. DoW will make replacement cards available very soon.

There are not that many Epic scenarios released with the expansions so far. But there is a lot of fan-made scenarios though.
I guess we'll see a few Epic scenarios in the upcoming Scottish Expansion.
There are no problems in incorporating Epic and CtA as such.

about cta cards: don't you guys feel that the cta backside was better (with map instead of crown)? Now we will have them equal to deployment cards.

Indeed they were!
But since the original back was a result of DoW feeling adventorius and going beyond the original intent, I can certainly understand they decided to go back to the original plan, after the first misprint.
