IM (lazy!) - MERRY XMAS/ HOLIDAYS Mon, 17 December 2007 10:39
Just a quick note to anyone that's tried to IM me here recently...

My access codes have run out of time so I can't reply. I've actually bought a copy of Pirates' Cove (and it's been a great hit with my kids!) but I've just been too busy, or lazy, to put the code in yet.

Merry Xmas/ Happy Holidays one and all!!

I have my M44 code but I am waiting to install it until I am ready to use the Scenario Editor.

Merry Christmas Smile

I often view RPG/Grognard rules like the Pirate's Code. They are more like guidelines.

Merry Christmas
to Everyone
Yes, C is for Christmas, this holiday has a name. Its not a season, but a time of giving to remind us of what we've been given.
The above is just a reminder. I've been in stores this week were everybody says, "happy holidays", or you see cards that say, "seasons greetings", and I do not like those. Why don't we say "Happy Holidays in February when we have several dead presidents birthdays and Valentines day? Why not have "seasons greetings cards in the summer, after all summer is a season, is it not?
Sorry, I'm off the soapbox now.
I was just reminded of these things when I saw your "Merry Christmas" Thank You for keeping it real.

Aye, Roobarb. Best wishes to you and your kin. I'll raise a pint and ask a blessing this holiday in honor of our allies and fallen comrades, past and present.

And best wishes to all (my air pack came in the mail this week)! May the coming year bring you joy, peace, and grenades on every die you roll.

Twisted Evil aye blessed be Twisted Evil

Christmas in The Trenches - Song

Words & Music by John McCutcheon, c. 1984,

My name is Francis Toliver, I come from Liverpool.
Two years ago the war was waiting for me after school.
To Belgium and to Flanders, to Germany to here,
I fought for King and country I love dear.

'Twas Christmas in the trenches, where the frost so bitter hung.
The frozen fields of France were still, no Christmas song was sung.
Our families back in England were toasting us that day,
Their brave and glorious lads so far away.

I was lying with my messmate on the cold and rocky ground,
When across the lines of battle came a most peculiar sound.
Says I, "Now listen up, me boys!" each soldier strained to hear,
As one young German voice sang out so clear.

"He's singing bloody well, you know!" my partner says to me.
Soon, one by one, each German voice joined in harmony.
The cannons rested silent, the gas clouds rolled no more,
As Christmas brought us respite from the war.

As soon as they were finished and a reverent pause was spent,
"God Rest Ye Merry, Gentlemen" struck up some lads from Kent.
The next they sang was "Stille Nacht," "'Tis 'Silent Night,'" says I,
And in two tongues one song filled up that sky.

"There's someone coming towards us!" the front line sentry cried.
All sights were fixed on one lone figure trudging from their side.
His truce flag, like a Christmas star, shone on that plain so bright,
As he, bravely, strode unarmed into the night.

Soon one by one on either side walked into No Man's Land,
With neither gun nor bayonet we met there hand to hand.
We shared some secret brandy and wished each other well,
And in a flare lit soccer game we gave 'em hell.

We traded chocolates, cigarettes, and photographs from home.
These sons and fathers far away from families of their own.
Young Sanders played his squeezebox and they had a violin,
This curious and unlikely band of men.

Soon daylight stole upon us and France was France once more.
With sad farewells we each prepared to settle back to war.
But the question haunted every heart that lived that wondrous night:
"Whose family have I fixed within my sights?"

'Twas Christmas in the trenches where the frost, so bitter hung.
The frozen fields of France were warmed as songs of peace were sung.
For the walls they'd kept between us to exact the work of war,
Had been crumbled and were gone forevermore.

My name is Francis Toliver, in Liverpool I dwell,
Each Christmas come since World War I, I've learned its lessons well,
That the ones who call the shots won't be among the dead and lame,
And on each end of the rifle we're the same.

Hey Roobarb, I just saw a History Channel show about the 1914 Christmas Truce. It was good! It you get History Channel in England, watch for it. Hopefully they will show it again. I wasn't sure that it really happened until I saw the History Channel show. They had a woman who was the daughter of one of the English soldiers, and a man who was the son of one of the German soldiers. They met in a field where their fathers had met so long ago. It was really cool. Christmas really is a miraculous time!

Roobarb....thanks for sharing the song! It choked me up, as well. I remember my dad saying Christmas overseas during WWII was the hardest part of the war for him. Every Christmas, I marvelled as a kid at how much he appreciated Christmas songs like, "I'll Be Home for Christmas" and "White Christmas"; and it wasn't until I was older that I came to understand the significance for him. Put the Holidays in a whole new light for me, and I can't help but think of all the people who've missed the holidays with their families because they were in other lands and seas protecting us. I think it's very important for all of us to take a moment to think of the troops overseas, whether you know someone there or not. My nephew's overseas this Christmas, and my biggest Christmas present will be his safe return home.

Merry Christmas my friend!!!!
