Gotic Line : Thanks Eric and Richard Borg Wed, 12 December 2007 18:17
I think M44 is such a great game.
Many scenarios are just great .
Im here just to thank you very much for scenario #1489A .

In Brazil not many people knows what F.E.B has done in WWII.
We sent more 25.000 'pracinhas' to fight in Italy . In 1964 Brazilian government suffered a state coup and put a military dictatorship to rule our country for the next 20 years.

In this time we just abandoned and forgot those who fought so fiercely in Monte Castello, Montese and another places.

My generation just hated the Army's men so much that it was a difficult thing to praise anything that could be considered a good thing done by the Brazilian Army.

With time I figured out how wrong I was. Although many officers had become important figures in our dictatorship's 20 years we cant forgot that common people have fought and died in Italy .

Of course, it was a really a small share in the entire war effort, but Im proud of those men . I've read books and documentaries that proved their value .

So it was a great and amazing surprise when I found that M44 has an official scenario related to our F.E.B.
When we play it at home (3x so far) we are reviving history again. History of our compatriots. I have no relatives who went to Italy but in this particular scenario we can feel how difficult was for those man to climb up the gotic line and wipe the nazis out .

At my home I cant watch my fellow fall at my side, neither hear the buzz from the MG42 nested gun or fell my foot freezing...

But I can say to my 7 years old son : "See the guys with the badge? They are Brazilians who fought in WWII and helped other people from another countrys to free Italy from fascists .

So again thank very much Eric and Richard Borg to include in this great game a tribute like this.

a hug

Thank you very much !

In Brazil people said in 1943 that it was easier to 'a snake to smoke 'than the Brazilian Governament send men to fight in Europe.

Well...as soon as the Brazilians 'pracinhas' got onboard in the ship to travel to Europe they started shouting : 'The snake has smoked! The snake has smoked '

Thanks again for the badge...

I think your initial post in this thread might have been one of the nicest posts I have ever read on a forum.

If we ever meet in person, I will buy you a drink.

Nice Badge, already my avatar =)
We could make more scenarios where the FEB acts on

Just for those who don't know (I think everyone), I'm from Brazil too ;]
I think we (plus one friend and his family) are the only ones who plays M44 here. DoW should export to Brazil, certainly would make a lot of sucess, judging by the board games we have for sale here (we still have monopoly and "war", a game based on the old "Risk" as the mainly and almost only options).
labalbi showed Memoir one night and I loved the game!
2 weeks ago my uncle brought me from France the base game + the Air Pack. Otherwise, I'd have to spend around 200 dollars to buy the single base game. As u see, buying good board games here isn't easy, but for those who really like, as us, there's no price for NOT playing Monopoly and War (Risk).

Seriously, DoW should think on that, I'm sure it'd be a great sucess.

Cya

Just to correct my friend there are others people playing M44 in Brazil. They arent as many as it would be possible, but we are not alone you and me and JPS .

You just love to correct me, huh?
You had 13 days to put the image on your avatar! Laughing
hehe, just kiddin'

I never saw any others brazilian players, even on the internet.
Is it a community or something like here?
We should organize a letter to send to DoW, I'm sure they would listen! Laughing

I agree with Talespinner...you Brazilian guys are very cool. I wish I could afford a trip down your way....I'd load up my suitcase with M44! Of course I can see the headlines...."Man drops suitcase full of games at Massachusetts Airport, film at 11!"

I know this sounds horribly stupid, but why so expensive? If you order off the DoW website, is shipping to Brazil through the roof expensive?

Yes...
But the shipment fee is not the main problem. We have a stupid importing tax of 60% over the price including shipment for anything above U$ 50!

Amazing, huh ?

So, if I import Air Pack from Fairplaygames.com ( a good and reliable site ) Ill pay :

U$ 34.95 + 32.17 (shipment) = U$67,12 . If Brazilian's customs 'grab' my package and tax it Ill pay 17,12 x 1.6 = U$67.12 + 27.2 =

= U$ 94.32 ! Considering that U$ 1= R$ 1,8 (Real, my local current) I'pay R$ 169,77 .

Well, you guys cant see how much is this, so lets take the BigMac price here in Brazil. Today one BigMac costs R$ 7,60 . So with R$ 169,77/7,60 = 22.33 Big Mac

In your country, guys , how many Big Macs , you can buy with the same money you buy an Air Pack ?

Yes, it is possible to my package 'bypass' the local customs without being taxed !

Some stores can mark the package as gift too, but everything will depends on the 'fiscal' mood for the day he pick my package.
Many people import boardgames without being taxed , but thats the exception

Holy Cats! I had no idea. That truly is terrible. Thanks for educationg me on this.
Embarassed

My family is from Canada, and for years, the exchange on the dollar (until just recently) was a huge thing to a lot of my relatives who came down to the States. I had a taste of that when my dad passed away up there a few years ago, and the exchange decimated the small estate coming to us kids. We so rarely see anything of Brazil in our papers or TV shows...and when we do, it's usually on your beaches and gorgeous women...so forgive this uninformed American his cluelessness on the subject. I'm glad I'm a little more knowledgeable now.

Sounds like there is a black market for games south of the equator. Anyone want to set up a cartel?

Cool

Only 50$ and you have to pay taxes? And I was thinking that our limit of 100$ before paying taxes was to small Rolling Eyes
