6 New Pirate/Ship Cards - Use all with the single included blank card ! See how here. Mon, 14 January 2008 05:50

Q: How do you add more than one new pirate or ship to your game with only one included blank card ???

A: Use my "Random Pirate" card and "Pirate Identity Mat" !!!

With my "Random Pirate" card, when you engage a pirate with this as the active card, you roll a die and select the corresponding pirate from the "Pirate Identity Mat".

If you defeat him, draw a new card as normal. If you are unable, the "Random Pirate" card stays in play. Roll again with the next encounter.

Available on the DOW site here :

http://www.daysofwonder.com/piratescove/en/content/fans/#jas on

Included New Pirates / Ships :

(From Douglas, download page. New format, graphics, some values/wording may have been adjusted.)

Captain William Kidd - Pirate
Bartholomew Roberts (Black Bart) - Pirate

(From Admiral Fisher and Eric DOW Crew, forum ideas. Card format, graphics, some values/wording may have been adjusted.)

Rock Brasiliano - Pirate
The Magdalena - Treasure Ship
Jamaican Governor's Galleon - Treasure Ship

(New card, my creation)

Calico Jack - Pirate

Sailing the high seas under his infamous flag of the skull and crossed swords! Calico Jack sailed with Anne Bonny and Mary Read for a time. Depending on your die roll, they may join him in battle !

Of course having all of these on official cards would be the best, but this is a great way to add a bunch, and still maintain the mystery in the pirate card pile. The random card has become my family's favorite!

Thanks to Douglas, Admiral Fisher, and Eric (DOW crew) for their great ideas. I hope none are offended by my use of your ideas, or by any alteration I have made. Thanks to DOW for Pirate's Cove graphics that I used for the Pirate's Identity mat.

I also included overlay versions of the "Sabotage" and "Secret Weapon" cards, for use in printing on the official blank cards.
(Use the cards without graphics to print onto official cards.)

Also included is a new event card, an altered variation of an idea by BlackDogSilver, "Hurricane". This card reads:
"After you plunder your island, a giant storm rips you from anchor, dragging you to sea. The storm blows you into a strange new harbor. Roll a die, and move to that island. The storm damaged your sails, lower sails one level. However, you still have time to plunder the new island."

You can use this card applied to the player that played it only, or applied to all players. Could lead to surprise battles! If the new island had been previously plundered, you would gain nothing from it.

Enjoy ! Feel free to leave any comments / critiques.

Printing Instructions:

***IMPORTANT*** Make sure to print each page individually. DO NOT JUST CLICK THE PRINT ICON. This will print the entire 16 page document, start to finish.
***Make sure to select "Print" under the "File" menu tab (PC) and select the print "Current Page" option for each page you wish to print.***

1. Download "Pirate'sCoveCardPack.pdf" from DOW's "Goodies" page .
2. Open file (you will need Adobe Acrobat Reader, which is a free download from Adobe if you don't have it)

Pirate Identity Mat
3. Print pages 1 and 2 onto photo paper - use the color, "Best" quality print setting
4. Trim excess, place front to back, and laminate (optional, but gives you a lasting mat)

Random Pirate Card

5. Print page 4 onto regular printing paper - use grayscale, "Fast Draft" or lowest print quality to save on ink - ***This is only an alignment page***
6. Align blank Pirate card over the card on the page you printed.
7. Carefully tape (clear Scotch tape works great) just enough of the top and bottom edges of the card to the page, to hold it there firmly. Be careful to keep card aligned with the registration marks.
8. Re-insert this page into your printer feed tray. Be sure to place it facing the correct direction (Up/Down, Top/Bottom) ! (Varies depending on printer...run a test page back through your printer if you are not sure.)
9. Set the print quality back to color, "Best" quality.
10. Print card
11. Let ink dry. Due to glossy finish on the card, this may take several minutes. I used a warm hair dryer to help speed up the drying. Best to let dry overnight, as one of my cards was still tacky an hour later.
12. Carefully remove card from page.
13. Enjoy your new card !

Additional included cards - Follow same instructions above

Looking forward to see your cards!

Any chance you upload your files to a file hoster (e.g. www.rapidshare.com) and post the links? Don't want to wait until DOW has checked them one day or other Very Happy

Downloaded it right now and yes, I am impressed! Very nice and professional work, I appreciate it!

The "Hurricane" card is very interesting, it brings another element of surprise into the game!

The only thing I miss is a pattern for the backside of the cards, because it's easier for me to use standard blank cards for printing, instead of the official blank cards. But it's no great problem to scan the backside myself.

Thanks a lot! Thumbs Up Pirate

Re:6 New Pirates/Ships and Solution for the single included blank card ! Thu, 17 January 2008 14:07
Thanks!

The back graphics for the cards are already available on the DOW Pirate's Cove "Goodies" download page, for both the Pirate and the Tavern cards.

Here is the quick link:

Do your blank cards have the same shape and finish as the official ones? If so, where did you get them?

Thank you, of course you are right! How in the world could I forget that the backside of the cards are already available in the DOW download section? Embarassed

The standard blank cards I use are bigger than the pirates cove cards, so I have to cut them off carefully after printing. A little nasty, but it works. After all these cards are almost indistinguishable from the originals, as I'm using card sleeves.

I found these card printing sheets at www.pearl.de (a german online shop for office supplies and a lot of junk). They are available with oder without printing software:

http://www.pearl.de/product.jsp?pdid=VM5590&catid=2411
http://www.pearl.de/productchoice_redirect.jsp?pdid=VM5589&a mp;a mp;catid=2411&rate=1&query=spielkarten

They muss be available in some U.S. online stores, too.

im just wondering. on the hurricane card you put the subtitle as storm. I believe its supposed to be a phase. Its intended to be played at the end of the plunder phase. Also what do you do if you encounter another pirate on the island you roll

Re:6 New Pirate/Ship Cards - Use all with the single included blank card ! See how here. Sat, 28 June 2008 18:23
It was intended to be played at the end of the upgrade phase, basically creating an extra turn, using the current board, before the pirate is moved and the treasure cards are reset. It didn't clearly fit into the current phases, but between two. We usually play it as applying to everyone, but it was left ambiguous so you could apply it only to the player playing the card.

After playing the card, play would continue as with a new turn. If you encounter a pirate, or another player, you would fight as normal. The only difference is you would not turn over new treasure cards, so if the island had been plundered before the hurricane, there would be nothing left to plunder.

The Jack Spear card was not mine, that one was in the section above mine.

Click on the link at the top of this post. At the bottom of the page (under the blue header "Random Pirate Mat....") is a .pdf file link. Click that to download my cards in .pdf format. (They're all in English....I don't speak French either! lol...)

Yeah, you are right, this link is broken:

http://static.daysofwonder.com/piratescove/en/img/pc_fans_ja son.pdf

Maybe DOW will read this and fix it?

Anyway, I use the fan created pirates but not the random pirate mat. What I did was this. I printed all the new fan created pirates on card stock (even paper will do if you glue the paper to something approximating the width of the cards). I trimmed the card stock to roughly the size of the cards. I then put all cards, both original pirate cards and newly created cards, into card sleeves, the kind with opaque backs so you can't see the difference between the originals and new. If they are roughly the same size and thickness stock, then you won't know the difference. Just make a deck of these sleeved cards and draw your pirates randomly from them. You could even copy the original cards to the same stock, if necessary, so they all feel exactly the same (but I can't tell the difference).

Hadn't played this in a bit, but broke it out again over the holidays.

I have updated my Random Pirate Mat and Cards, slightly tweaking the values for improved play.

I checked, and DOW no longer has these linked on their site, so perhaps they can put them up again. (...he mentions hopefully.. Wink )

Until then, here is a rapidshare link. The single .pdf file includes the Mat front and back, the complete Random Pirate Card, and the Random Pirate overlay for printing on the original blank pirate card.

Happy New Year 2013!
Enjoy!
