Extra Components Fri, 23 July 2004 16:46
Hello folks,

I was just wondering if Days of Wonder sell individual components to their games. I would be very interested in purchasing some extra infantry and tanks. Ticket to Ride is a great game and I would like to purchase an extra set of cards, 3 games and they are starting to show wear and tear already.

The infantry and tanks are because I dislike the tokens the special units carry around, the board is crowded enough already and they are just a pain. I spray painted three full special forces units of both infantry and tanks from my second set(Grey for Axis, Black for Allies) and they look and work great. Some of the user made scenarios are fantastic and use a lot more special forces. I would like to make a full set of special forces guys.

A thought just occured to me: Is Days of Wonder planning on offering in an expansion different special forces playing pieces? Then I don't need to spray paint!

Cheers
Thunder

Thunder,

At some point we will be able to offer additional/replacement parts for the game. Right now, we're very tight on inventory, so we just don't have any extra parts. When that changes, we'll make the components that make sense available for purchase from our website.

how about replacements for defective components? Sat, 31 July 2004 20:52
Mark,
I just sent you an email about some defective (broken) components that were that way right out of the bag.

I'm overall not impressed with the pieces themselves. The map is nice enough, but the AT guns (not artillery pieces) are very flimsy and half of them have broken wheels while almost all are warped and look silly.

Most of the tanks also have some serious gun barrel droop.

What's the company's policy on replacement of defective components?

Thanks.
Steve

Unfortunately, I wholeheartedly agree with this. I purchased 2 copies of the game and in both cases, the gun pieces are not in good shape. Just about all of the barrels are bent and it does not look like you can "re-bend" them back into shape easily.

I should have been clear that if you have defective parts, please let us know and we will replace them at no charge as quickly as possible.

The easiest way is to send email to customerservice@daysofwonder.com. That way we can track the emails and make sure that we take care of getting you replacement parts as soon as possible. Be sure to include the specific parts that you need replacing and also your mailing address.

Steve, I got your email, just send me your mailing address and I'll send you out replacements.

As Eric had posted on the board earlier, we've been working with our manufacturer to fix the problem of the "too flexible" artillary pieces and we've had much better success with a slightly harder plastic. The've sent me some of these new units so I can send them out as replacements.

Note: that this coming week we'll be out of the office running tournaments at the World Boardgame championships so we won't be able to ship replacement parts out til the week of August 9th.

There are also a number of soldiers that looks like they are in danger of wounding themselves if they tried to fire those weapons.

But that's a trade-off I can live with when considering price/game value. The game is not supposed to be a state-of-the-art miniatures games. It fills it niche as an entry-level wargame perfectly.

I had the same problem with my guns, men, and tanks.

I used Zap-A-Gap to glue my anti tank gun wheels back on. It seems that that's what they used to assemble them as well as putting the infantry on their stands.

To fix the gun problems on all pieces, I used boiling water. Just boil your water, kill the heat, and then dip the barrels or stands into it. Gravity will take the barrels down and make them straight.

Will we be able to order the harder plastic pieces???

It looks like we'll be able to make the harder plastic versions available for purchase at some point. It's a busy month (WBC and Gencon) for us, but hopefully by the end of August.

Try game components from "Attack!!", they are only $3 and come in a variety of colors.

Here is the web order page

Well, I just got the game yesterday, and my experience with the AT guns/artillery was so disappointing, I never got around to trying the game. Instead, I got the glue and modelling clippers out.

I encountered the following:

1 Allied piece with the barrel glued in back-to-front!
1 Axis piece with no barrel at all - not even lying loose.
1 Axis piece with 3 wheels - the third one glue directly to the middle of the axle. This I clipped off, but it's still lop-sided.
2 Allied pieces with the wheels already fallen off.

Now, the wheels I could glue back, and actually glued all of them, just to be sure. The barrel that was back-to-front refused to budge, so I clipped it off and glued the two halves to the correct sides. The missing barrel bothers me the most, as there is no ready-made solution for me there.

This seems a rather large number of mistakes among 12 pieces, not so? I sent an email to the agents here (South Africa), but we have very little support in this country for anything made overseas, so I doubt I'll have any luck. I would be OK with it if they deteriorated through gaming, but to have this right out the box is very disappointing.

Well, judging by the comments here, it seems the game may be worth pursuing, so I'll have to try and overlook it. Still, I find myself wanting to avoid scenarios that call for more guns than I have good pieces, or better still, stick to those with no guns at all.

It's a little thing to many people, but unfortunately I'm anal enough to have it bug the life out of me. Smile

I don't use the generic artillery pieces. Instead I took artillery pieces from one of the recent Axis and Allies games, glued them to bingo chips, and painted them to match the Memoir colours. That gives me more appropriate field (rather than anti-tank) artillery miniatures: the German 88 and a US 105mm. Now if I could just find a British 25-pounder in the same scale...

Tobald,

Some of the early versions of the game had some quality problems with the tanks. We later switched to a different plastic formula that gave us much better results. If you send us your shipping address, we can send you replacement figures.

send it to customerservice@daysofwonder.com or directly to me if you want.

both of my sets where the same and my best friends copy too... the arty sucked... just a bad design.... they look like a sqauished bug... you know... one of those funky mayflies... and a little heat and they curl up... and we is in TEXAS!!!! we know heat...

I got missing wheels also...

but I just use my micro armor arty pieces... german 88s, american 105s and british 25lbrs...

but nice pieces would be cool if you have to shell out 50 bucks per game...

now if they made a better arty piece and sold them I would buy them, whos to say the free replacements will be any better???

and the plastic???? my green allies wont dry... they stay tacky regardless of the kind of paint....

the germans are just fine... whats with the green????

but ya know what.... the game is great and I'll work around the pieces....

Thanks for the replies, guys. Smile

@MarkoPolo: I sent an email to customer service - so I'll let it run that course.

I must say though, I sat down tonight, read over the rules, set up the Pegasus Bridge scenario, and began playing through it by myself, just to get a feel for it. Taken together, the rules, the cards, the other pieces, wooden dice (wow!!), and the mechanics - I began to feel magic there. I am now itching to get some games in. One of my brothers will be summoned to the house this weekend for initiation. I have even convinced my wife to give it a go. Hmmm.. I might just have to order Pirate's Cove for my son now, seeing the Days of Wonder quality in action.

Thanks Nordiskanc,

I was actually looking at Shadows, but the South African agent for Days of Wonder doesn't have it yet. I'll keep an eye out though! I ordered Pirates Cove, and should get it tomorrow.

In the meantime, I spent the weekend playing Memoir '44 - magic! My brother is going to end up living with me, just so we can play regularly!

Tobold,
I thought it was bad having to wait 2 weeks for Shadows (vs. European release)....we often forget there are regions more remote in the world than rural North Carolina Shocked
