FANTASY NATIONS CUP
You think you know the game...
Who's the best?
Who is under-rated or over-rated ?
Who this year's rising stars will be?
Well put your money where your mouth is....
and win yourself a 6-month webcard courtesy of Dea
Competition now open to all NC contestants
YOUR TEAM
you have 22,000 ELO to spend on players (see below)
you buy a team of 6 players from across the different teams
one (and only one) of your players has to be a real life team captain
do not include players from your own team in your initial selection (except when you choose a captain).
SCORING
All players (including captain):
Win match: +2 points
Beat player from higher ranked team: +1 bonus point
Win match 3-0: +1 bonus point
Captains only:
Captain loses own match: -1 point
Captain's team wins contest: +2 points
TRANSFERS
You can transfer 2 players between each of the rounds to replace players that are knocked out. You must make sure your team stays within 22,000 ELO up to QF, within 22,250 for SF and final.
2 transfers between RR and last 16 (22,000 ELO)
2 between last 16 and QF (22,000 ELO)
2 between QF and SF (22,250 ELO)
2 between SF and F (22,250 ELO)
Make sure that following these transfers your team still has one (and only one) team captain.
WHAT NEXT?
The player list has been posted below. Please select your team and make sure one of your players is a team captain.
Entries by pm to me or on this thread by Saturday 1.00pm CEST please. Feel free to amend team BEFORE this deadline.
Entries should give player names and ELOs, team ELO and say which player is captain.
OTHER POINTS
I will keep track of scores, teams and update a league table.
Only include players with a valid score (i.e. not Peter)
I will accept late entries into the game, but players will not score points for matches already played (beware: I do not want to be a detective, so I will err on the side of caution and discount any games played on the day of entry unless I am sure).
Scoring note: teams as ranked from 1-24 in erps's post below will hold for the whole tournament (RR and KO).
Same goes for transfers. Transfer window stays open until the end of the round (i.e first transfers can be made until official end of round of 16); but players will not score you points for matches already played (or begun).
These rules are provisional until midnight tonight in case I receive more suggestions and corrections.
Finally, have fun! but keep the banter and trashtalking within reason.

Thanks for your help erps!
Yes, your suggestion of one player per team (or mine of having an auction) are lots of fun, but as you say may not leave enough players to go round, so will stick with this for now.
The reason for the +1 for selection was to give an incentive to pick from lower ELO rated players too, but I see your point about how some it might influence real life.
Very important: a match = the whole best of 5/7 not a game within that match!! Captains are important, and I think it is important to balance the potential gains with some potential loss, hence the negative score; plus a bit of extra pressure for us captains is no bad thing eh? but, I agree too much emphasis on captain's games, so I have amended to -1 point not -3. Note: by picking a captain you are also effectively picking a team!
Any more comments or suggestions? Especially about the scoring..
Also, is the 22,000 ELO too generous?

Hi
22000 is okay, but make something like that:
For every 1000 ELO below you get per round +1 point. So if you only choose up to 21000 ELO -> 5 points in RR. Maybe you have to raise then the other points a bit.
The games of the players should count. At the moment only a win against a higher ranked player gives +1, so why choosing high ranked players? If their team win, they get the +2, as i understand now. Still fine tuning needed.
bye, erps

Very nice idea, Stephan, looks interesting
I guess the winner of last year's NC-pool should sponsor the prize (unless of course DOW was planning to donate one ) so I go with tradition and offer a 6 months webcard (hoping of course that I win it myself).
Some questions to check if I get everything right (I think all answers are YES - correct?)
*) You can buy yourself and/or members of your own team
*) You can buy more than one member of the same team
*) You cannot transfer during the RR
*) At the end of RR and after each KO round you can transfer a max of 2 players - so if eg 4 of your players are out after RR you can transfer 2 of them and the other 2 just cannot score

I would not give -3 for a captains loss. They are normal players, no superhumans.

great idea Stephan !
one possible issue: if your players are substitute, i suppose you don't score anything?

Great idea Stephen!
For sure I will take part. I want my webcard back dea
I would prefer not no involve real life captain, for me will be more funny that every player in the fantasy nations cup should choose one captain for his/her team, that may be or not a real life captain.

On current scores, 22,000 points would let you buy White TGV, the 10th ranked team. That puts the cap just above the middle teams, so 22,000 sounds fine for the round robin. But what happens if we have a Red-UEG final ? Adding the lowest six players from those teams currently nets you 22,129 points, putting you over the limit. I would suggest letting the limit rise based on the quality of the teams remaining. Not a lot, but enough so that you have some room to maneuver.
I'm also somewhat concerned about insider knowledge. What if you know that someone from your team will be unavailable for the RR? In the US version of these fantasy teams, the leagues typically put out injury lists, so you know which players are out, doubtful and probable. Barring such a list, I suggest that you are allowed at most one member from your own team. Btw, this also gives you cover for why you didn't have enough confidence to pick only players from your own team.
edit: Since Peter is listed as having 0 combined ELO's I think we should decree that Peter is no-one's fantasy.

One more thing! The picks should not be posted here! Otherwise some people will wait and check out the first picks that come in, giving them extra information. To make this as fair as possible, the picks should be pm'ed, (so long as stephan has some room in his box).

Thanks for all the great feedback and help!
Note: I have tweaked the rules a little.
The most important change is that you should NOT select members of your own team.
Two reasons: captains should not be seen to be influenced by this game when they select their team (I can't believe they would be, but best make sure); and captains have more inside knowledge about availability than other players, so that would also not be fair.
Rules state pm teams to me, but if you wish to post them here and not keep them secret, that is not a problem. I will update a comprehensive list once I receive all entries.

Stupid question : toutoune choosed TEE (z.B) in his team, can I choose him also, or not ?
Cause if it isn't possible, it's only a run and I don't really see the interest to just be in the 4 or 5 firsts to give their team

Well, not easy for the "Red TGV" Captain to not choose his fantastic partners... wouldn't it be a bit unfair ?
Anyway, I bet on this gang from the Young Kingdoms :
3810 TT theKid (c)
3855 AT AT_Angel6
3714 WMD WMD Black Widow
3600 SOS SOS Sjoerd de Slome
3519 BBB BBB-Koel Player
3492 Rosé HALIK - Pratavone
sum : 21990 !
... and good luck

Fortunately my ranking is lower than Zimo's so I can happily share his choice of captain
Let's go for the Allround Troublemakers
AT_dea1 (AT) 3649 - captain
CAT-daedin (CAT) 3799
SOS youki (SOS) 3718
WMD drake WMD (WMD) 3665
Nayeli (OLE) 3577
CH-Leleline_M (CH) 3569
Total 21977
May I kindly ask my team members to forget all holiday plans they might have had and play and win every match - thank you
