the wyrm has turned - grand campaign status Tue, 24 March 2009 22:42
Well some of you may have read a few of my posts lately about the Normandy grand campaign my 15yr old son and I are playing. I'm the Axis and he commands the Allies. If you've seen my posts you'll also know that my son is kicking my butt!

Well, here's a summary of events so far:

Flanking Caen: the first two battles he won by one medal each, but then I lost by three on the third battle. Since he won the "Withdrawal" battle the campaign ended there. He also captured one of his objectives and I failed to get mine. Things were looking mighty grim as he beat me in this campaign by enough to get 2 grand campaign points!

Per the campaign end results, we skipped the "Breakout" and played "Taking Caen" next.

Taking Caen This campaign began even worse than the last with me losing the first battle 5 to 1! But redemption, my forces performed a fighting "night withdrawal" next and I won by 3 medals, followed by winning by 4 medals as he pushed thru Caen. During the last battle I actually used a Storch to rescue one of my infantry units reduced to a single figure (a first since we bought the Air Pack) denying him another medal! The Allies failed to capture a single objective (-1 GC points) so I won the campaign and received 2 points.

So now the show down! We have moved on to the Falaise campaign, no battles fought yet but we did roll the optional "what if" events: I got Panzerschreck and he rolled TIGERS! Woot ha ha, einfach wunderbar! I can't wait to see what happens next!

well, I lost the first battle 4 to 6. He rolled 2x stars on the reserve roll so he had two air sorties at the start and picked the other one up during the game. Luckily it stayed dark for awhile and he couldn't use his air forces, but dawn broke and he strafed my poor pigeons heading away from the front.

Well the "Opportunity" battle is over and I won 5 to 1! So it all comes down to Falaise.

well the campaign is over and it ended in a slugfest! He won "closing the gap" 6 to 4 (including the objective medal) so the final count was 13 to 13; a campaign tie! Zero points for both of us, which left us each 2 points in the Grand Campaign; another tie. So to determine the winner (per the rules) we compared total medals for all battles fought and my son won 26 to 22!

WOW, I knew I had to keep it close in the last game to win the campaign, but I wasn't close enough. Interesting note on the last battle - all 5 cards dealt to me (axis) at the beginning were center cards! I brought my Breakthrough tanks on the first turn and started rushing troops across the river all in the center. I held it open but he kept bringing fresh troops in and decimated my units before they could get off the board.

This was a very fun experience. We're going to switch sides and play it again before moving on to the next Grand Campaign - I see months of fun to come!

Wow! That is a close final score! Sounds like it was a good time, which is the most important thing.

I'm glad you enjoyed it. Thanks for sharing.

update, we've switch sides and are playing again. As the allies I crushed him in the Flanking Caen campaign but I failed to win the "Withdraw" mission so we went to the Breakout and he is destroying me. If I don't shut him out in the last battle he'll get 3 campaign points (to my 2) when we move on to Falasie.

I can't believe how much fun we're still having (after a short break in the gaming)!
