Overlord with 2 players Sun, 29 March 2009 19:30
Hi there.

First of all I have to admit that I am new to Memoir 44.
Though I've only been able to play about 20 scenarios so far, I already happen to be convinced of this game.
Now that I have all the expansions regarding the one on one combat I recently layed eyes on the Overlord expansion asking myself whether it's possible to play it with only one player on each side, just like the basic game, since I lack people who are intrerested in playing Memoir 44.

I'd really like playing scenarios as big as the Overlord ones but I cannot bring up that amount of players that is being talked or written of in all the reviews I read.

Furthermore I'm intrested in the miniatures of Hedgerow Hell and the upcoming Tigers in the Snow expansion.

I'd like to thank you in advance for your help.

Sorry for the bad english. I'm German.

You can play Ovlerlord with two players but you must concentrate and it helps if you are an experienced player! I found it best to start with a desert game to become familiar with the three field generals and the C-in-C.

It is certainly easier if you have the special set of cards from the Overlord expansion.

Why concentrate? Because of the accumulation of units on the board or is it that there are new rules?
Alas I do not know what C-i-C means.

What I know is that, playing Memoir 44 with the Overlord rules, there is the actual Overlord drawing command cards and handing them out to the three generals.
Now is it not that playing it one on one I become the 3 generals and the Overlord?

Apropos, I've been wondering how it can be fun being the Overlord and not getting to actually move the ordered units?

C-in-C means Commander in Cheif, the "Overlord" I have played overlord many times, sometimes with many people and sometimes with just two. It is fun both ways. With many people, even thought the commander doesn't get to move units, its still fun to be in charge, and have fun with other people. 1v1 works best with experienced players due to the amount that you have to pay attention to, but it is really fun to try when you have a lot of time on your hands.

I've played Overlord both 1-on-1 and with as many as 8 players.

They're both fun!

1-on-1, yes, you play the roles of the Commander and all three Field Generals. You get to control and execute the entire strategy.

Multi-player, adds the whole team dynamic.

It's best to learn the basic game pretty well before playing Overlord.

When you're ready for Overlord, download the a PDF of the First Edition of the Overlord rules on the Memoir website. http://www.daysofwonder.com/memoir44/en/content/rules/ With that, you actually don't need the special Overlord cards, though some people find them handy.

I guess I'll try it after a few more battles then.

Thanks for the help!

You may already know this but I didn't seen any talk of it so far...you need two full base games to play Overlord Memoir '44. Or you can buy the Operation Overlord expansion which gives you little cardboard tiles for the extra units.

The problem is, if you don't own two full sets of the base game you can only play pre-printed maps...which are fun but there are only a few of them. If you own two copies, you can make many of the official and user created Overlord battles.

I hope this helps and forgive me if someone already said it or you already knew this info. Cool

I have only played Overlord one on one, and I think I like it more than the regular game. You get a much larger hand to pick cards from and get to do more on an average turn, so it feels like I'm in more control. But you can't do everything either so it has the same feel as standard Memoir 44. I highly recommend the Overlord expansion though, the new cards make learning the Overlord system easier.
