Ranking System Sun, 12 April 2009 03:06
Im a new player and it hasn't taken me long to realize that the ranking system for this game is completely f*cked... I win 2 games and Im pushed down 20+ ranks.... i lose 1 game and pushed down another 20+ ranks

It should also consider if you were given good or terrible missions... and is it just me or does anyone else get El Paso-Denver & Houston-Kansas City consistently?

The Elo scoring system works fine after 20 games.
After 1000 games you will find out, that this ticket combi is ok. Cool

The seemingly crazy way the ranking system worked had to do with the fact that you were still "provisionally" ranked/rated at the time. It takes 20 games to get established and during those first 20 games this can happen. For more (technical) information see:
http://www.daysofwonder.com/en/play/ranking/?

As for the various ticket combinations you will find - as Goscha mentioned - that these 2 (den-elp and kan-hou) are definitely NOT the worst you can get. For instance, because they are worth so few points, it often won't hurt to just ignore them. Let's say you have both at the same time, but you build a bunch of unconnected sixes all over the board and finish in 8, 9, 10 turns. Fair chance that your opponent - with bigger tickets (!) - won't have completed them either and you'll have a good chance of winning. Or you might set out to actually actively block your opponent from fulling her/his tickets if you get an idea during the game which they might be. Or you might get nice colours to fulfill both and draw some more tickets. That's part of why the game is so much fun: various strategies might all turn out winning Razz

As for decent players: you'll find games being opened with titles like 1300+, 1400+, 1500+ etc. These indicate the rating required to join, so you'll be assured of a certain minimum standard. They will usually be "private" games with a password either given or implied (could also be 13(00), 14(00), 15(00) etc.)
At the moment i see you are close to 1400 so you could either open games yourself like this yourself or for instance ask if it's okay if you join a 1400+ game with 1380. Most of the times that'll be fine.
Of course there are also completely open games where you can see the rating of the opener and decide to join such a game if you feel like it.

And, finally, but most importantly: HAVE FUN !!
