Question for Eric & team... Tue, 16 June 2009 14:32
Can you disclose future plans for Memoir releases - what's next in the production pipeline?

Many thanks

Insert sound of crickets here. Very Happy

Just kidding. Always excited to see what's next from one of my favorite game producers.

Sorry, but that's not very likely to happen. DoW has made it clear that they don't share their plans very far in advance of release. Whether good or bad, that's the way it is.

Eric has made it clear that they are working on a computer version of Memoir '44 but other than that, nobody has heard any plans.

I thought awhile back, DOW said that they were going to keep us better informed, through periodic updates via blogs?

I would be curious to see that reference because it would surprise me to hear that they changed their policy and I missed it. Smile

A while ago there was a call for DoW to share more information but you have to understand that they got burned when they did it before, so I don't think they're very eager to repeat that event. What we do know is that DoW is dedicated to putting out high quality expansions for Memoir for a long time still. The computer version is being worked on, and we'll likely see more Battle Map expansions.

Other than that, we'll have to wait and see. Cool

I understand the anxiety, but personally I'd rather be excited about future projects that have a 25% chance of not happening, than not know about them until the last minute Smile

Well, this quote from Eric should give a vague hint of thinks to come, but it doesn't offer any groundbraking news.

eric wrote on Wed, 25 March 2009 05:06

Yes, there are plans to release new Breakthrough scenarios online that use the countryside map that came with the Campaign bag in the not too distant future; and to release some new breakthrough Battle Maps with minis, further down the road.
But one thing at a time Cool

Bolding added by me.

And "further down the road" can be a long time.

Yes, Rasmussen, a breakthrough map of an island!! Or a large blank overlord map (the size of the "Tigers in the snow" map). These are my votes. I believe that I have enough plastic pieces, I am looking for scenario books (ok, or campaign books, even though I don't usually get to play but one game at a sitting!) or maps. I also want to take this time to say how great I think the scenario editor is.

Don't get me wrong, I'll buy it if Richard made an expansion that had an island with more water and lots of ships, but naval combat doesn't interest me as much. I like the land battles best, but to each his own! Cool

After dozens of M44 matches Im getting tired of assembling all those tiles over the map.

So , my vote is : Give us printed maps with terrain included...ok, it will make my tiles worthless but I can take that...will be more easy to set up a scenario and Im gonna play more in less time...

I think pre-printed maps in the standard size would get expensive, based on the price of the battlemap series.

Have you got the Battlemaps? That will give you four pre-printed Overlord scenarios. Playable one-on-one.

The campaign bag will also give you a pre-printed scenario in Breakthrough format. And a nice green bag for storage.

Don't know if you own them.

OR,stupid idea, maybe make units that are tiny? Then you can use the pre-printed maps in the scenario booklets. Voila, no terrain setup!

I dont think would be that expensive. Anyway, I dont think they gonna release it anyway...

I dont play OL . Its rare thing .
Yes, I have the breakthrough map. A half-dozen more would be good.

The DoW could sell them as required. You ask they print and voilá. Or make them available for download, so everybody can print them in a local bureau .

a hug.

I think a little time to set up the scenarios is half the fun,a chance to chat and get the beer in!

I would like to see a 'partisan / resistance' army pack. It would need to have interesting approach (battle for Warsaw, French resistance actions, etc) but it may be too tricky to make an attractive set (everybody loves their armour!). I would definitely love to see further Overlord Maps / pre-printed map and certainly don't mind paying £10 for one. Arnhem is a superb map.

You know...thinking about it , I DO would love to see a square map with a city in Center.

Take Caen ! battle. No need to medals . Just take it . Hold the city for one more round. A printed map .

I like your idea about partisans. They were more or less neglected in WWII history. Not not many know their important rule in the war.

Well, I'm not advocating naval battles. Just more ships to bombard the island. And I think that artillery or ships hitting caves should work something like hits on Tiger tanks. See this thread for more:

I'm all for another Campaign book. Have gotten much enjoyment out of the first, despite the editorial glitches. I'm happy with the smaller battles on the regular boards, and haven't been able to work up much interest in the pre-printed over-sized maps or OL.

I hope the first Campaign book did well enough to warrant more...!

While it could be okay to have one or two special maps made in the standard format, it would make little sense to create all maps that way - then we wouldn't need all the tiles we have bought, and they would lose a great part of their business.

The modular way of M'44 makes it easy to recreate just about any scenario imaginable, and that is one of the beauties of the system. It works in every theater in any scale.

But I can easily imagine a particular scenario that would need special counters or tiles, not yet available, that could be printed as a paper map for less money that it would cost make the cardboard pieces.

I would also like to recommend an idea for the DOW brain trust. How about an American Civil War expansion pack? You could have infantry, cavalry and artillery. You could have special rules for heroic leaders and elite infantry and a myriad of other ideas I'm sure they could come up with. The neat thing is that the board and tiles could be used for this also(hills, roads, streams, trenches, forests etc). Maybe a few tiles for fences and 19th century towns. A campaign book just of the Battle of Gettysburg would be terrific. The thing is, I'm just not sure I would be interested in an Italian, Partisan, or sea expansion pack. WW2 Campaign books are OK though. Is there any interest out there in the American Civil War? By the way, you could also do the same thing with the Napoleonic era.

I can't tell if you're joking, but I don't think you are. Smile

Richard has already created an American Civil War game with these same basic rules. It's called Battle Cry and you can read more about it on BoardGameGeek:

http://www.boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/551

Richard has also created a game called Commands & Colors: Ancients that you should take a look at:

http://www.boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/14105

These might be something you would enjoy, and although they aren't made by DoW I'm sure the companies that put them out did a fine job. Cool

Rasmussen81,

Sorry to say I wasn't joking. I didn't realize that Battle Cry used the same rules. Is this game out of print? I didn't see where you could buy it except for used versions. If it is out of print, would it be feasable (cost wise and legally) for DOW to sell Civil War figures, a few new tiles and a special rule book as an expansion to use with the MEM44 basic game. To me, except for new battle maps and campaign books(which I thoroughly enjoy), I don't know where DOW can go with the WW2 genre.

Hi Eric,

I don't know if Battle Cry is out of print. Some of the other guys might be able to tell you. I did find a new copy at Funagain Games, but it's not cheap.

It would not be cost effective or legal for Days of Wonder to start making Civil War stuff. They could buy the rights to the game and start looking at that option, but I don't imagine that will happen. You could always get your own Civil War figures from miniatures companies and use the Memoir stuff to make your own version, but I wouldn't look for DoW to go down that road.

I wouldn't write Memoir '44 off just yet. We know they are working on a computer version of the game (which might not interest you) but I would guess Richard has more ideas that we have yet to see. Very Happy

Ras, this is the web site to download free games. Another good one I've played is Peoples Tactics. I mostly like turn based strategy games. I don't think you'll be diappointed if you like those kind. Especially since they're free!
