Our family love DoW games.

Memoir 44 is the best 2 player game. My son and I love this game.
With a 14, 12 and 7 year olds here is the order of games we play most

Pirates Cove
Shadows Over Camelot
Ticket to Ride (base game)
Mystery at the Abbey (7 year old hasn't played this yet)
Queen's Necklace (we have only played this a few times. it needs more play to determine if we like it)

The game my 7 year old daughter requests most is Shadow Over Camelot

We don't have the others yet. I am excited about Small World.

Memoir44 - Battlelore for 2 players

I love Smallworld and Pirates Cove for 5 players.

Queen's Necklace for 3 -4 players

And above all Shadows over Camelot with Merlin's Company

Family of 4 (Husband, Wife, Two teen daughters).

Our top 3:

Small World
Ticket to Ride - USA
Memoir '44

Small World just makes us giggle, as there are always some seriously crazy combos like Dragon-Master Ratmen or Diplomatic Skeletons, e.g. (Some are powerful, some are weak, but we always get at least one that is hysterically atypical for their established fantasy background).

Ticket to Ride we can play online (4 computers), or at the table, depending on our mood.

Memoir '44 - fun for when only 2 of us are available to play.

We also like Shadows Over Camelot, but don't play it as much as the other 3.

My wife and I have discovered that any of the Ticket to Ride games are the best for introducing non-gamers to the World of Board Games! They're easy to learn and fun to play, even if you don't know much about board games.

My personal favorite is Memoir '44 and I've been using it to teach history to my elementary students. It's the best game I've ever seen when it comes to creating interest in deeper historical themes.

Shadows over Camelot and Small World are wonderful games for groups who want to play a little bit of a deeper game.

Memoir '44. Although I'm a little biased because I only own Battlelore out of the Days of Wonders games.

Best 'boardgame' has to be Ticket to Ride, it has a bit of everything. Best 'game' I would say: Memoir '44, for its re-playability and historical aspects. As a final note which is the least best (or worst) DOW game? For me that would be Ticket to Ride card game.

And favourite non-DOW game anyone?

You can't go wrong purchasing any of these:

Ticket to Ride (and variants)
Memoir '44
Pirates Coves
Mystery of the Abbey
Shadows Over Camelot
Small World

Which one is best depends a lot on personal preferences. I personally like Memoir '44 the most, but I am into WWII. Then probably Pirates Cove next (but they are all great).

In my immediate family, TTR is probably the most widely acceptable of DOW games to all parties, although, I prefer most of the other games to TTR at this point in time. TTR is the most like a traditional board game and would probably appeal to most people. The others take gaming to a new level in my opinion (and have air of adventure) and you probably need to have specific tastes for each one to be appealing.

Sgt. Storm,

I have a gift card for my favorite online game store and I'm trying to figure out which game I want to get. I'm looking at Pirates Cove but don't know that much about it. I've downloaded and read through the rule book but it's hard to picture without having played it...so I have a few questions: Rolling Eyes

1) Can it be played with 2 players and is that still fun? I know it says 3-5 but my wife and I might be trying it alone sometimes and I want to make sure it's still fun for 2 people.

2) I read somewhere that it can becoming lop-sided where one player has lost several fights in a row and can't ever catch up with the others. Has this been your experience too?

3) Is the game fun after playing it several times? I want to make sure it'll be fun for a long time if I'm going to get it!

Thanks for the help and advice!! Cool

My favorite is Memoir'44 by far. I've played many scenarios. I have a soft spot for Queen's Necklace but don't get to play it much.

My favorite is M'44 as well, I have only 2 DoW games (M44 and TTR USA) but with M44 I have almost all of the expansions. It is just a very good game, it offers history facts as well as fun battles with luck and tactics. While TTR is quick to play with more people and easy and funny, M44 offers more in-depth strategy. So TTR is on a good second place. I am interested in other games of DoW like Pirate's Cove and Camelot but I have to save first Razz plus that TTR and Mem44 are higher on the wishlist Razz

To start with, my answers might be biased because (1) I really like pirates (arrrgh) and (2) I have probably only played this game about 10 times and haven't completely understood the best strategy yet.

1) My experience has been its more fun with 3 or more players. With 2 players, battles are not that frequent and you can usually avoid each other if you can read your opponent. But there is always at least one battle. But I think there are probably 2 player variations. For instance, each player could captain 2 ships and that would be like having 4 players in many ways. There were some variations on board game geek.

2) This is somewhat true. Once you have lost a battle, it is harder to get your ship back to shape for another fight and this is more likely a difficulty in 2 player games. With more players (or 2 ships per player I am guessing) this is less of a problem. But, I am not exactly sure this is that big a deal. I still like playing the game. You can get points (fame) by buring treasure and getting tavern cards, so it is not all about winning battles. That is, there is more depth to the game, which comes from having to build your ship and time your visits to islands.

3) I really like this game, but I am not a normal person (as my wife will tell you - e.g., I can watch boring movies like the Blue Max or the Long Ships over and over while others can't get through them once). And I haven't played it that many times, like I said, maybe 10. But I am always up for playing this game (more so than TTR).

It is somewhat hard for me to get my family to play it. My daughter (6) doesn't have the patience yet and my wife thinks it is a long game (it's not that long). My son will play it on occassion. So usually, we take it on trips or play on holidays.

There was also a pretty compelling looking variation posted on BGG that looked like it would spice things up. I haven't tried it out as it required printing a bunch of new cards. Also, there are some custom legenday pirates there that can make things a little more interesting.

Like I said, I like the game, and I think there is good depth to it. And it is a beautiful game. With 2 players you will have to be willing to experiment.

1) Not a lot of fun with 2 players as the fun in this game is battling each other on different islands. It just won't work. 3 players with 2 dreaded pirate ships works well and it is fun to play.

2) Yes it can happen. We solve it by sending the royal navy after that player therefore it balances but you depend on a player picking up the correct tavern card. Alternatively we just do it if the difference between ships stands out like a sore thumb.

3) Remains one of my favourite DoW games and it is great to play with younger gamers. For more mature players it may require some house ruling as we do in no 2.

Thanks for the advice and insight into this game! I appreciate all the information and it looks like I'm going to try and get it. Now I just need to convince my wife that our game shelf can hold another big DoW game, and that we need it! Very Happy

Wish me luck! Laughing Razz

Good luck,

I was a bit unsure when I picked it up at ESSEN last year but the girl at the stand convinced me to buy it and it has been one of my best purchases last year.

The Daddy of all DOW Games. It has introduced so many of my non gaming friends into the gaming fold.

Small world
Simple mechanic & great fun.

Pirates Cove
Family fun no matter what your age

Mystery Express
Another great family game

Colleseum
A bit more complex but enjoyable

For 2 players
It has to be Memoir 44
Unfortunately i've not yet had the chance to play the larger version for up to 8 players but i assume it's excellent

For larger groups
Smallworld (Especially with all of the expansions)
Pirates cove (Better for the slightly younger people)
Shadows over camelot (Excellect team game)

More traditional type board games
TTR Europe
TTR USA
TTR Swiss
Then the others

I also like the online versions of M44 and TTR
