Sword of Stalingrad - Gullies	Mon, 12 October 2009 21:56

DoW - It looks like you've got another winner lined up. I for one am looking forward to the new map and cards. I like what I've seen so far. I do find something a little concerning though... The initial map images show gullies running along the east and west ends of the map (Rats in a Factory side) and through large sections of the Sword of Stalingrad side. According to the card compendium gully hexes are impassible for all units from the sides and can only be transited via the openings. http://www.daysofwonder.com/memoir44/en/content/cards_compen dium/?id=terrain_44 On the Rats in a Factory side this will prevent the eight German units on the (German Left) edge from fully participating in the fray. The flip side of the map the Sword of Stalingrad will have a similar problem as it appears only train trestles are crossing the gullies. This will isolate the German left as there are no crossing points. I am going to guess that a rules modification will somehow allow the transiting of the gully hexes for this scenario. If not many units will be isolated. I don't recall bridge layers being used on the Eastern Front but I could be wrong... Actually the hexes that you see are not gullies, but balkas, a new special terrain. They are not impassable, but you have to stop when moving in AND when exiting a balka hex. Of course, it also provides cover. [Report message to a moderator]

I'd have liked it snow-covered, and grey, not green, and I cried when I got to the page and found that there were no new figs, and no Stukas... But you really can't please some folks... I hear you on the winter format but apparently this is covering the beginning of the siege, maybe July - September 1942. This will probably open the possibility for a October 1942 - February 1943 winter map with a lot of devastation. I too think this would have been a good time to introduce bombers and the Stuka... A missed opportunity but at least we get a new deck that opens what appears to be many new options. [Report message to a moderator]

Interesting word - where does it come from? can't say I've ever come across a 'balka' anywhere else (unlike a gully, say)...
