The only thing that prevents me from acquiring and playing a triple Breakthru Overlord game is the size of the table required Rolling Eyes

What about the time required for a game that big?! Shocked

OK honey, I'm heading upstairs to play that tripple-Breakthrough-Overlord battle, I'll see you next week! Laughing

LOL! Laughing

Let us think: a 30 medal triple Breakthrough-Overlord would require a month? Very Happy

I reckon M44 is at it's best Overlord, and with more than 2 players...

You've seen the Heineken (?) ad, right, the one where the wives start screaming when they see the cupboards full of clothes -- then the husbands start screaming when they find the fridge full of beer...?

You fill the fridge with Heineken, set up the table (that's what would be time consuming, laying out all those terrain tiles!) , invite all your mates round and see which produces the bigger scream: the Heineken or the triple-BO...

By BO, I mean Breakthru-Overlord, you understand... Razz

A triple BO sounds cool, but which battle would you like to play?

Stalingrad, D-day, Market Garden, Ivo Jima?

Am I wrong in saying that my kitchen table could easily accomodate 3 Breakthrough maps side by side? But I need more basegames and Breakthrough maps to do it. I ONLY have one of everything. And someone would need to create a scenario.

You have to get a pool table with an insert (like a ping pong table top) to make it flat. I have one in my basement which is lately have been devoted to Memoir '44 (which makes it hard to play pool). I have two base games set up now and can fit a third.

I wrangled this one (permission to get the pool table) from my wife as a condition for me moving in to her house (along with never having to do gardening or mow the lawn). A sweet deal by the way!

Regretably, the map editor doesn't do Breakthrough Overlord, let alone a triple map Breakthrough Overlord (preferably winter...) Razz .

D-Day and the subsequent battles would be neat (though you'd need a fair number of all-sea hexes) !

The Bulge...?

All you'd really need is the extra boards and enough people willing to bring along the extra base games and whatever...

Who is it here on the forum that's got that history club, a ton of stuff and a bunch of willing young helpers for a Guiness Book of Records M44 game ?!

That would be me. Razz

Sadly we don't have a week for playing time...we only have an hour and a half! But I have all the sets (6 base, 6 Pacific, 6 Terrain, 3 Air, 5 bags, etc) so during the summer I could pull this off.

I don't always have time to just play regular battles, let alone a triple-Breakthrough-Overlord battle! Rolling Eyes

Using the editor, you could create 3 separate maps, which could then be used to lay the thing out...

Cleverly thought out, the 3 separate maps could be fought as 3 separate battles in a campaign; and/or as a single 3-map Breakthrough board...

I'd be reluctant to try this with paper maps but would probably do it with hard copies.

So DOW needs to get cracking on making hard copies of the breakthrough map available (along with that sea/naval expansion).

Good point, Sgt! Paper maps and all those terrain tiles...! You could try holding the maps down with masking tape...

Such a game -- three large Breakthrough maps, designed independently to be played as (1) the British and Canadian landings; (2) Omaha; and (3) Utah; plus the subsequennt battle for the build up (I'd have to scale it to see how far inland you could go...); and (4) as a massive 3-map battle -- would make a nice expansion/set of expansions and/or campaign.

Especially if it came with jeeps, half-tracks and SP artillery Razz

I guess you can't get EVERYTHING related to Memoir... because if you get 2 of everything, you might want then to have 3 of everything! Laughing

Not likely. many of us have two of everything for two reasons: the ability to play Overlord scenarios and to play those SFTF-scenarios that uses components from these extra sets.

Of course, if anyone should ever come up with some scenarios that uses MORE than two sets, I may reconsider. However, right know I cannot imagine any possible scenario I would like to play that uses that many men or components. If I wanted to play a monster game like that, I could always dig the old monster war games out of the closet!

If you're going to go for a record, you may as well smash it.

Overlord/Breakthrough maps for each of the 5 invasion beaches, Utah, Omaha, Gold, Juno and Sword. So thats 5 Overlord maps, with Breakthrough depth to allow for airborne assaults.

Also include Pegasus bridge and Point Du Hoc. Factor in a "what if" Hitler had woken up and ordered the Panzers to move earlier.

Tie it into a campaign that covers up to Falais.............

OK, were gonna need an aircraft hangar floor space, everyones M44 sets.............

I had a table that measured 8' x 8' (it is smaller now as I have cut it down a bit) just for a wargame that had nine 22 x 34 maps that linked together. Even then, one of the maps (of Spain) had to be located on another table which also contained several large game charts. The size of the table made it difficult for me to reach into the center when necessary and impossible for some others to do the same without the aid of a step stool.

But a move stick would just not work with the stacks of 1/2 counters (well over 2,000 of them) used in that large game. A good set of nimble steady hands is needed.

Could someone confirm what the actual dimensions in cm of three Breakthrough maps would be?

Imagine the newspapers would be full of it, the first D-Day experience completely with those nice little miniatures....Airborne and Commandos, Utah Beach, Omaha, the British and Canadians.....Pointe du Hoc....

From different books I read the Americans and British even built their own maquettes of the beach and surroundings, so the soldiers could identify their targets...

Something like this but than in 3D, I would happily devote my two base games to this biggest Memoir '44 ever...

imagine the command chain though:

- Eisenhower, Supreme CinC
- Corps Commanders, Beach CinC's (or even a level between, with division of Americans and Canadians...) So for every beach one CinC
- Then normal field generals etc.

around 15 people per side...

You could even say that Panzer armies for the germans have to be controlled by a different general.

When also playing with airrules...special air marshals....

Then how many figures on the board...massive...

Who will join? (Everybody in this community I presume....Razz)

OOh it's just a daydream...my apologies Laughing Laughing Laughing Laughing

One is 72cm by 91cm (fold to fold without rules). Hex edge to hex edge it's 70cm. So it would be 216cm by 91cm or 210cm by 91cm if you fold it a bit tighter.

Come on Jesse, it's not like teachers do anything over the summer anyways... LOL

But an Overlord Breakthrough could be an interesting idea.

Why stop there though, why not try a double Overlord setup?

This subject probably warrants a new thread...
