What to do when medal token are required for a victory Fri, 11 December 2009 03:29
Hi everyone - A question!

So here ist he situation. A scenario specifies that you need to have "6 medals with at least two medal tokens." You collect the six medals but only 1 is a medal token. Your opponent has 4 medals. Who wins?

Hi, Marc, and welcome to the Forum!

If I understand your question correctly, you're talking about a scenario that requires 6 victory medals, two of which must be from capturing objectives.

In that case, you keep playing until either you capture the second objective or the opponent reaches 6 medals.

Good luck, and have fun!

Thanks - That is what I figured. So now a scoring question. Lets say that I accrue 8 medals and still am unable to get both objective medals before my opponent collect his 6 medals. He is the victor of course but if I am playing the scenario as part of a campaign how do I score it. Of course my opponent will get an extra victory die to roll but what about the medal count? Do we both have 6 medals medals that we record on the campaign sheet? If so then it seems that the only benefit to my opponent is that they get the extra die during the victory role.

I'd score it as 6-6, your opponent would get the Victory Event roll, and follow the path (and special instructions) corresponding to your opponent's side winning.

Somebody who was involved in the development of the Campaign Book might be able to confirm or disconfirm that.

I would score it as 8-6, but your opponent gets the win and the extra victory roll doe.
The victory condition for you are 2 medal tokens and a total of 6 medals, so you haven't met your victory condition, but in campaign play you still tally up the medals.

I favor ad79 answer. Since the dead soldiers cannot be resurrected and they are medals they should count. If you can be clever enough, you should be rewarded for it. Delay taking the required objective until you have run up the score a bit. This is just clever play and should be rewarded.

Agreed. That's what makes playing scenarios as part of a campaign more challenging, interesting and fun than one-off games!

What do you think about this as a modification:

If the side that is required to reach 1 or more objectives as a condition for victory does not reach ALL of its objectives then it loses the number of medals equal to the number of objectives they had to reach. The side that stopped the opponent from reaching its objectives will be considered the scenario victor and thus will have an extra die to role during the next victory event role. In addition there are two penalties for the player required to win the objectives collects during the scenario:
1. Regardless of the number of medals he accrues his final medal count will be knocked down to 1 below the # of medals required to win the scenario.
2. He will also lose an additional medal for each requited objective he does not reach.
For example, let’s assume that the Allies do not reach the two objectives that are a condition of victory in a scenario requiring 6 medals for victory. During its quest to do so the Allies score 9 medals and both their required objectives during the scenario before the Axis scores 6 medals. The Allies score the victory but only receive 6 victory points instead of 9. If the Allies score 9 medals but do not collected the required number of objectives before the Axis reaches the 6 medals required to win the scenario and the Allies only collected 1 of their 2 objectives the Allies score would be 5 – 1 = 4 victory points for the scenario. If the Allies collect none of their objectives the Allies score would be 5 – 2 = 3 victory points for the scenario. Under this example the Allies would still get the extra Victory Points role during the next scenario and onwards during that campaign.
Note: For scenarios with objectives that are not required to win as a condition of winning the scenario there is still a penalty of 1/3 medal per objective they do not reach.

Personally, without any clarification from the scenario/campaign author, I would score it as 6-5, since clearly one side did not reach the required number of scenario "medals". You could argue about what is a medal, but I would say only the first 4 units eliminated are "medals" in this scenario for the side that requires 2 objective medals.

I would point out that this hypothetical situation would be really unusual, I think. It would be a remarkable (and unbalanced) game where one player could reach 8 medals without getting the needed objective medals while the other player still hadn't reached the needed number of medals! Rolling Eyes It sounds to me like the loosing player needs to stop texting his or her friends and start playing the game at hand! Laughing

I'm with that - eliminating texting during a match - haha!

Anyway a medal scored is a medal scored. This is especially true in the campaign scenarios where if you are playing a grand campaign every unit medal and objective medal counts. Those units who died trying to reach the objective are no less inportant in the grand scheme than the objective itself. Although according to the objective track for each campaign, these items may be scored differently, all medals scored will count!!
