I made and played a Breakthrough Overlord scenario. Fri, 18 December 2009 22:02
And it was fun!

I based my scenario on jdrommel's Prokhorovka Breakthrough scenario and just expanded and fitted it for the extra witdh.

I played well, but I had too few units on the table.
The battle was balanced until a score of 12-10 for the Russians and then the Russians steamrolled the Germans for a 24-15 win.
the large size of the battlefield really showed how the frontline shifted back and forth, before the Russians took control and pushed the Germans back.

I have uploaded some images of the setup to my gallery.
http://www.daysofwonder.com/en/mypage/378435/m44/gallery

I hope Richard comes up with some scenarios in this scale for a future battlemap as it was very fun.

Looks very promising!

I saw another picture of another Breakthrough scenario - what about that one?

And how did you manage to print another Breakthrough map? Very Happy

Well, one of the breakthrough maps used isn't exactly "official" Embarassed
and that was the reason I asked Days of Wonder for permission to post these images. Let's not say more about that "homemade" map.

The other scenario is about the Anzio bridgehead and hasn't been published yet. I have playtested that a couple of times, but have completely forgotten to post it.
It will require the Germans to capture Anzio to win and to do that they have to cross the Whole map. It is not 100% historically correct, but fun to play. It uses Tigers, Supply trucks and a special rule for "Anzio Annie gun"
If you want to play it, I can post it!

Sorry about this, my bad. There are no images of this scenario in my gallery.

It was probably just the image from the side you were referring to? All three images in my gallery is about the Breakthrough Overlord scenario.

The interesting thing about "homemade" maps, is that some people have tried making their own before and they've usually discovered that if they make it at a comparable quality to the ones we get from Days of Wonder, the price is actually more than it would cost to buy from DoW. Cool

I don't think DoW has too much to worry about from privately made products. Despite everyone's complaining, DoW items aren't overpriced for the product we get. Smile

You are right Jesse.

To explain a bit more, I made the my map to test the Breakthrough format and since I liked I bought the Campaign bag.
My map cost about the same as the Battlemaps to make if not more and the quality is vastly inferior to the DOW papermaps.

I think the value I have gotten out of that bag and map is good. I wish I had more of those bags. It is a great way to bring games to gamenights.

The problem is, that I still can't get my hands on the Campaign Bag... so I've decided to create my own instead!

Even though its quality should be inferior, or its cost could be higher, I still insist that I should create it. So how did you succeed in creating another Breakthrough map? Very Happy

Btw, if I would have the map, I would really like to test your Anzio scenario! ( I did see some similarities between that scenario and KippRyon's Anzio - The Crisis scenario ).

Hi Nemesszili

I am sorry you are unable to have things shipped to Romania, and I hope you will be able to buy stuff in the future.

And I hope you understand it, when I choose to not tell everyone how I made my own copy of the map. It wasn't what I asked permission for. I only have permission to post the images containing the map.

Again, so sorry I can't help you!

Stig Morten

Nice job Ad, what program did you use to make it? I would like to make one with a large island in the middle, maybe the shape of Iwo Jima?

Hi 50th

I used the Memoir'44 editor and made one Overlord scenario for the Russian side of the battlefield and one Overlord scenario for the German side of the battlefield. The middle hexrow ofthe battlefield will show up on both scenarios.

I worked out great to make the scenario this way, but you have to watch terrain tile usage for yourself because the editor can't tally up two different scenarios.

Is it still the case that you can't buy a separate breakthrough board? (comes with storage bag or something like that?)

I really like the idea of teh breakthrough format- would be nice to see some proper boards - maybe a coastal or winter variation would be good.

Still only available with the bag.

I think the size was a good one, but it might be best used for scenarios that had troops airdropped in to get action all over the battlefield. I think Market Garden would work in this size.

During my play the frontline flowed back and forth on all flanks and there were times when the Germans had the initiative in the center, but was hard pressed on their own right, and when the Russians finally broke throught the German lines, they steamrolled forward. So a good size for Memoir.

Hopefully DoW gives us some breakthrough boards with beachterrain. I think the landings on D-day would be cool in this format.

I think a mounted breakthrough map with countryside on one side and beach on the other would be cool. With a couple of the D-Day beaches as Breakthrough and the possibility for Overlord-Breakthrough D-Day scenarios.

How long did the "breakthrough overlord" solo battle take you? The amount of time I imagine it would take prevents me from trying something on such a large scale. Smile

That's the one thing that annoys me about the battle maps. They are very hard to get flat (and keep flat). If they had been printed on one side only I could have mounted them on card.

Anyone else have this problem?

It doesn't bother me too much when I play, but I have heard of other people using a big sheet of Plexiglas to keep the whole thing flat. If I was more motivated, I would use that. Cool

This battle took me 2 hours to play. And setup time wasn't too bad either. It didn't take much longer than the other overlord battlemaps.

But.

I have only one basegame worth of terrain + trenches from airpack on this one and about 60 units so setup time wasn't worse than Pavlov's house from Sword of Stalingrad.

If I get a second basegame and make a scenario with more terrain and units it will up the setup time, so maybe it is better suited as a battlemap?

Well, the official map worked better than my homemade as that had been rolled up for some time before it was used. Some tiles was sliding down the bumps in the map, but it is what it is and I can live with it.

As Jesse said, a sheet of plexiglas would be nice to have on top of all the terrain tiles.
