Reporting from Cassino...	Wed, 20 January 2010 14:51

I've just started playing scenarios about the Battle of Monte Cassino made by Jesse (I did the same last year, but this time I'll make an AAR as well). Scenarios will be each played on their respective date: Breaking the 36th Texas Division on the Rapido River scenario just ended after a bloody, but ineffective American assault. Germans made use of the cover provided by Anti-Personnel mines and bunkers; only fragments of American units made it to the other bank of the Rapido. Good dice and good cards both helped the Germans to achieve victory. Battle's result: 6-2 German victory By the way, US VI Corps successfully established a beachhead at Anzio-Nettuno. Result: Operational stalemate at Cassino, successful establishment of an Allied beachhead behind German lines. More updates on February 15th... Sounds like fun! Thanks for writing AARs for the battles you play and I'm glad you're enjoying the different Monte Cassino battles. They were fun to research and interesting to make. When I was researching for Breaking the 36th Texas Division, the books kind of read like a horror story for those poor troops trying to get across the river. They didn't have the support they were supposed to on their flanks and they had to cross open terrain under heavy artillery fire (which I didn't include in the scenario because it made things impossible for the Allies). Once they got close to the river they stumbled into the live minefield that they thought had been cleared (their safety corridor markers had been disrupted by the artillery file). As the surviving troops started across the river, they were fired on from hidden positions and then if anyone got over to the German side of the river they were caught in overlapping fire from German machine gun emplacements! I've thought about making it into a campaign, but I don't want to rush things and I think it would be fun to have a campaign with a larger scope; I would like to include battle from around Italy so it would be a campaign that covers a larger piece of that history. We'll see what ends up happening. For now, it'll just have to be a series of individual battles. Cool

AD76/Mr. Bump... didn't you make a Italian scenario... If I remember correctly wasn't it in Breakthrough format with a rail gun? You should build it in the scenario editor and post it on your Page... [Report message to a moderator]

About Anzio beachhead in Breakthrough format. Can you guess which song I listened to before I decided to make it?

It doesn't have the great historic background info that Jesse provides, but it's quite fun to play if I may say so myself.

The Germans have to attack as they have a medal hex on the allied side of the board they must capture, while the allies must defend/hold the beachhead.

I guess the song which you listened to was Pink Floyd's "When the Tigers Broke Free". Am I right? Btw, I encourage all MM'44 players to try ad79's Anzio Beachhead. I missed the rules for German Elite Infantry (it wasn't mentioned in the special rules section), that's why the score of playtest is only 12-7. It would have been 12-10 at least. It is a very enjoyable scenario, and you can really see what Breakthrough means. [Report message to a moderator]

Thanks for the kind words Nemesszili. As noted it is a attacker/defender scenario where the Germans are trying to cross the map and capture Anzio, while the Allied forces are doing a fighting retreat if they can't hold the Germans at the frontline. I will edit in the rule about elite infantry in the special rules for clarity. [Report message to a moderator]

Reporting again from Cassino! Today morning, the USAF (with the force of 142 B-17s, 47 B-25s and 40 B-26s) razed the Monastery to the ground atop Monte Cassino, as a preliminary air raid before our second offensive on Cassino. The 28th Maori Battalion began advancing towards the Station, which fell quite easily. Then the Round House was taken by Engineers, but ferocious German counterattack stopped the assault (the German sniper was really annoying!). Slowly the Germans retook the Round House and cleared the Station. The battle ended as 6-4 German victory. General Alexander was outraged as we failed to break through. The battle was concluded as a German tactical victory and an Allied strategic victory, as on May 11th the last and decisive battle of Cassino took place with an overwhelming 6-2 victory for the Allies. Failed to report on March 15th (was our national holiday), but had much fun playing the other battles. Again pledging for a Campaign with these scenarios from Jesse.
