Removing Wire

Two Allied infantries advance toward a 2-figure German infantry. The first steps on a mine and the second moves into wire. The first unit rolls 2d and destroys the German unit. Can the second now decide to remove the wire? Or must the decision about wire be made during the movement phase?
I've always taken for granted that the decision must be made during movement but, when I checked, I found that the rule is in the paragraph on Battle: "Battle: ... An Infantry unit that is eligible to battle may remove the Wire instead of battling."
Can that decision really be made after seeing how the other attacks turned out?

i should say that it's possible to remove wire after the others have battled, no restriction to that because it's in one phase
like in a real life situation, if a unit approached a wire, they can wait until the other friendly group open fired and when their friends said cleared, they just simply cut the wire and advance, otherwise they can concentrate on attacking the hostiles
and how about if an engineer steps to a mine, can he decide later after his teammates has battled, whether he wants to battle or remove mine ? i also should say, yes he can
what do you guys think ?

When it comes to engineers entering mine fields, there is no choice. The rules say, "An Engineer unit that moves onto a Minefield hex and is eligible to battle must clear the Minefield hex instead of battling."

Attacks are resolved in the order you choose, so if you wait with the unit in wire, and the Germans get elliminated, you can either 1. attack another target or 2. remove wire.
So yes, you can wait and see, and then decide.

One idea is to turn the wire 90 degrees in the hex as a reminder that the infantry have the option of removing instead of battling. This helps when deciding the order in which your units battle.

Knowing the answer and using it to your advantage strategically in gameplay are two different things!!
