Online version? Mon, 27 July 2009 14:58
Having played quite a bit of Small World, I'm surprised there hasn't been much talk of adding it to the library of online games here... I think it'd be perfect, as none of the race abilities or special powers require acting out-of-turn. This also makes the game ideal for PBeM.

Are there any plans to make an online version of the game?

There was a flurry of suggestions about this soon after being released but DoW were understandably circumspect on the issue probably due to costs and because the game had not proven it's popularity yet.

I would buy an online version if it had bots.

But I'd rather buy a full expansion with many new races and powers first.

What some competent guy could do, would be a VASSAL module.
In the case of Memoir 44, this has been done, for an example.

Seconded - it's frustrating to run out of races in a 5 player game and have less than the 6 possible choices when you want to select a second (or third) race in the game...

I'd love to see an expansion as well, but I'd like them to take their time with it and make it a GOOD expansion Wink

As for the online version, I'd still like to see it, especially since I don't think it'd take a huge amount of programming to work... It'd probably be easier than ticket to ride, I'd think...

As for races running out on a five player game, you HAVE been recycling people's races when they go into decline a second time, right? It's true that the choices get a little sparse near the end of a 5-player game, especially since there's always those couple that are a bad combination or whatever and just don't appeal to you at all... But that's part of the game, I think. If you see a must-have combination, you should jump on it! Smile

Agreed...

I think the suggestion of someone banging it together in something like VASSAL is a possibility too, although I suspect once sales figures are in for the first six months or so, an online version may suddenly appear Wink

Well the competition just finished for the mini-expansion for Essen this year. That should give DoW plenty of extra ideas to work with for quite a while.

Just adding my two-cents.

MAKE AN ONLINE VERSION!!!

I love this game, but often times I can only get a 2-3 player game going amongst my friends (Work/School schedules and such)... plus I don't have THAT many friends who like board games, hahaha

Anyway... an online version of this game would be amazing!

A note for the Days of Wonder crew if they are reading: I'd pay for an XBox Live version Very Happy

Re:Online version? Thu, 04 February 2010 15:52
I would end up spending a lot of time playing an online version of Small World! I do know that Days of Wonder has been working on an online version of Memoir '44 (the game I frequent the most often) so maybe this game is in line after that. Rolling Eyes

Having said that, I don't know that it'll happen as quickly as everyone would like simply because DoW has limited resources and might put their energy into things like brand new games (like Mystery Express) that we don't even know about. But maybe someday we'll see an online version! Cool

That's cool... I downloaded it. It's pretty decent, except you have to basically do everything still. It's a barebones setup where everything is in, but the module has no rules or anything with it, so you still have to do everything by hand... which honestly almost takes just as long as the real game.

I have a feeling we'll see a full fledged version of this game in the very near future!

Way to go Small World community!

VASSAL is just an emulator, which allows online/PBeM play, between people who actually own the physical game.

To create a game with AI could have a negative impact upon the selling of the original game - and, for the least, would not be free as the VASSAL module.

Hi all,

First post and I'm weighing in to add my request for an online version.

I picked up the boardgame and played it with my daughters (8, and 12 - that's their age ... not their name Very Happy ) who rave about it.

I would love to play the game online.

Both myself and TRagedy (creators of the Small World Vassal Mod) will keep an eye on this thread so if anyone wants to post any feedback or suggestions on the mod please feel free.

It's a barebones setup where everything is in, but the module has no rules or anything with it, so you still have to do everything by hand... which honestly almost takes just as long as the real game.

You're right in so far as the module doesn't contain rules validation so it has no notion of what can move where, how combat works etc. As Robin says, it's simply a virtual representation of the physical board game.

Incorporating rules validation would take a fairly lengthy amount of time and it wasn't our immediate priority. Our main goals were to get a workable system that people could play online, visually does the board game justice and then add the expansions. We're almost there, we just need to bring in the leaders.

We also felt rules validation wouldn't add a great deal of value to the module as Small World is a fairly straight forward board game with a rule set that's easy to pickup. If the game was more involved with complex combat calculations etc then we might have thought differently.

Rules validation can also increase the likelihood of bugs where rules are not enforced correctly in all the given situations (which Small World has plenty of due to all the potential power/race combinations) so we concluded that the benefits didn't outweigh the costs.

Regarding the time it takes to play we've added some features that make playing somewhat smoother than the real boardgame.

- Pre-defined board setup including lost tribe placement.
- Return to Tray action on the tokens so taking out and putting back counters is less fiddly.
- The coin system is vastly improved so you can see at a glance the coins collected with a special money pouch for each player to place them in.
- Shuffle deck actions on the power and race stacks to make shuffling quicker.

As with most online games probably the most time consuming aspect is chatting via text but what we've tended to do when playtesting is use a voice comm application like Skype which speeds things up remarkably and gives more sense of a virtual face to face game.

We've also designed the module such that it's flexible and can scale so we might include some community member created powers, races and tokens at future point in time.

Hi all, I feel that there needs to be a multiplayer flash version on this website. Any flash game designer could make it no problem. As far as people who don't have the expansions; have you ever played MW2? The people who have the expansion can play it, but those who don't, can't and can only play with the expansions they have or the original game. I myself don't have any expansions, but I AM going to buy them and I would love to see them online.

Sorry about the long delay in updating Smallworld Vassal Module.
I do have plans to update with latest expansions and new coin management system. My life has just been to crazy. I hope to get some time soon to spend on it.

I would wet my pants if an online version would be made available!

(not sure that's motivating for them or not!) Smile

My gaming group is an hour away from me - so I cannot always play when I want to!!

Honestly - it makes sense - they did a lot of the coding already with the iPad version. Time to get it here too!

(and no - not xbox! way smaller market than people who have computer/internet access...) Smile (oh - and I don't want to resub my live acct.)

Ok - I'm babbling on... too much wine tonight... Smallworld Online please! (I would play like 32 games a day... seriously!)

Actually, because a computer and the iPad are such different devices (interface, controls, etc) and because the iPad doesn't use Java, the work they've put into the iPad version can't be used for a PC version...they would have to pretty much start from scratch. But who knows, maybe they'll do that and we'll end up with a computer version. I would play it!! Cool

I hear ya on that... But as a person who has helped create iOS games (we used Unity... so yes... a lot of the work was done I realize) we were able to use a significant portion of the work we did - towards the version that will be released for browser play.

If anything - HOW to go about a lot of the programming is already done. They have the brain work into developing an AI for example.

So yes - I very much understand the difference between the two platforms... (and yes I posted when I had a lot to drink last night... so that didn't help the post either...) But we cannot deny that a lot of the framework is already done.

That being said - it doesn't make us want an online version any less!!!! BRING IT PLEASE! Smile

As far as XBox live goes, there are a lot of boardgames that have been successful there, including Carcasonne, Ticket to Ride, Risk, and others... I would hazard to guess that the market would support Small World as well. I suppose part of that would depend on how well Ticket to Ride did, though Small World is a very different demographic, I think.
