Expansion Order

I was wondering what is the best order in which to get expansions for memoir 44.
Should I start with operation overlord or the terrain pack?
(I dont have (or plan on getting anytime soon) the extra board, with the snow/dessert)

This question comes up a lot, and there are a couple pat answers. You can pick them up in the order they were made (terrain pack, EF, PT, etc.). Or you can look for the real "game-changers" first, like the Air Pack and Tigers in the Snow.
The best option, though, IMHO, is to decide what interests you the most. If you love books and movies about the Eastern Front, say, then pick up the EF expansion and the Swords of Stalingrad map pack. If the North Africa campaign fascinates you, get the Mediterranean Expansion. If the air war fascinates you, get the air pack. If you're getting amped up for the Spielberg/Hanks produced "The Pacific" coming out on HBO next month, maybe you should start with the Pacific Theater.
Follow your interest and you can't go wrong.
The only exception is that whatever you get, you will probably want the Terrain Pack expansion sooner rather than later. A lot of those tiles quickly became mainstays in other expansions.

It depends on what scenarios you want to play, or if you want to design your own scenarios. If you want to design your own, or play scenarios that were later in the war, then yes, the terrain pack is the way to go. If, on the other hand, you want to play scenarios from earlier in the war, or those in Africa, then get the Mediterranean Front. If you like the Pacific battles against the Japanese on countless Pacific islands, then the Pacific Theater is for you. (My personal favorite). Or if you want to play scenarios in Russia like the battle of Stalingrad, then the Eastern Front is for you. I like them all. I have them all, except the campaign bag.
And don't forget, if you have more than one friend you want to play with, get the overlord expansion. Playing on teams of four is a great way to play, especially at conventions.

To be useful, the document could explain a "typical" order of purchase but explain the reasoning behind each selection. Anyone interested in working on this? It could be a great addition to someones User Page and would be easy for us to provide a link for new players.

I second this idea.
I'd start it myself, but I still don't have all the expansions. But I did just add the Air Pack, Mediterranean, Tigers, and Sword of Stalingrad (more on my impressions of these in a later post when I've had time to try them). Already had the TP, EF, PT, and winter/desert map.

My friend and I are doing the following buying order:
Air pack, because it adds extra depth. We want it and it adds in to almost every future buy. We've got this now
eastern front+winter map, because we plan on playing the eastern front a lot
Terrain pack, to unlock all possible terrain
And when we have all this, we have all we need to play the
Campaign book: soviet campaign
Overlord will be around the time we find enough like minded players to do a big battle

Sounds like a good plan.
Just to complicate matters for you. Overlord is very fun 1 on 1. You don't need the full 8 players to enjoy it. But, the more the merrier.
