Mines? Mon, 03 May 2010 12:03
I have a question about mines.

I have all the army expansion packs, air power and terrain pack. Now I've not been very tidy with my tokens, and I now have three different sets of mine tokens (I think):

One set of 5 with only the skull and bones, numbers 0,1,1,2, and 4.
One set of 10 with a lighter skull and bones and "Achtung Minen", numbers 0,0,0,1,1,2,2,3,3,4
One set of 14, with a darker skull and bones and "Achtung Minen", numbers 0,0,0,0,1,1,2,2,2,2,3,4,4.

Looking at this now, it seems I misplaced a 3, and have two sets of 0,0,0,1,1,2,2,3,3,4 and two sets of 0,1,1,2,4.

Scenarios often say that one of the players should place the mines blind, but I'm not sure from which set of numbers should be drawn.

Personally I have all my mines chucked in together, and just draw from the whole bag - i don't find it makes that much difference to the scenario, and if you want to even things out, you can always use the same set of mines (re-shuffled) when you play for the second time (playing the opposite side.)

The only time I can see it making a difference is in the scenarios where you have to find a 0 mine in order to clear a path and gain an objective medal (one of the med. theatre ones i think.)

Looking at the Support Card on mines it seems that there are different size sets in each of the expansions.
The terrain pack contains 7, Eastern Front 4, Pacific has 8, and I guess the rest is from the Med.Theater.

However, I don't really see how this maps to the different sets that I have...
I'm just wondering what the reasoning is behind the different sets.

The reason why each Country Expansion (Russia, Britain, Japanese) has it's own set of mines is because many folks only buy one expansion. In this way, they can play all the basic scenarios that come with that expansion without having to dig around for mine pieces from another expansion.

I am conjecturing that the number of mine pieces vary with each expansion based on the number of pieces needed for each group of accompanying scenarios. This is the simplest logic for this variation.

Terrain Pack - 10 mines - only 6 mines maximum needed for scenarios
Eastern Pack - 5 mines - only 5 mines maximum needed for scenarios
Mediterranean Pack - 8 mines - only 8 mines maximum needed for scenarios
Pacific Pack - 5 mines - 7 mines needed for the Peleliu lLandings scenario
* the Pacific Pack is the exception to this, however, this is an OVERLORD sized scenario, all others scenarios in this pack need only the maximum of 5 mines.
