Grade - Rank

The system of (military) ranking (with the choice of the army of reference), and additionnaly the medals, and further more the (global, international ) grading are great means to improve our 'virtual personnality' On Line...
But it would be more fun if it could be more visible, when you take a look to a player waiting on line. Or have a look to his personnal pages...
And in fact, I like the idea to have my rank and my medals down in my signature. Impressive to see the performance of great players like Brummbär or Rassmussen, no?
Or of course, Eric or Antoine, mais les concernant, on ne comprendrait pas qu'ils ne soient pas au top du tableau

If a newbie sees that you have a high rating and a lot of awards, will he be afraid to play you?

It's possible... I don't know that it would be fair to hide those things from a newbie because it could be a rude shock to play Brummbar (who is at the top of the ranking right now...no shocker there ) and then after the battle discover that he has all sorts of awards and such.
Having said that, it is beneficial for lower ranked players to play higher ranked people because if they lose their score only goes down a little bit (and the winner's score only goes up that same amount) because it was the 'expected' outcome, but if the new player wins, their score will go up a lot (and the expert's score will go down the same amount) because of their ranking.

Jesse is correct here and in fact, because it is this way, it might turn out that the higher ranked player may become hesitant to play newbies!

Sadly though, that is how it has been with T2R as well.
If you just want to have fun and don't care about rank, then of course, no issue.
But if you wish to "protect" that rank (aka nothingness), then that will always be the case.

The difference between Memoir and T2R is that in Memoir, you can choose a biased scenario to give the weaker player a fair shot. In T2R, everybody is playing on the same map. (In T2R, do they give weaker players free turns or extra cards as a method of handicapping?)
After you have a bunch of games under your belt, the next game's impact on your rating won't be huge. And if a player has one miraculously good game -- or an anomalously bad one -- his rating will settle back toward its true level after a few more games, anyway. Since Memoir has a luck factor, a strong player will lose to any opponent, in any scenario, at least occasionally. But in the long run, you can't fool the rating system.
Suggestion: For brand new players who are just learning the moves, there is a special category that I call "teaching games," where I might give helpful advice to my opponent. It might be useful to allow "teaching games," where ratings can be turned off. (Here's another case where an Undo function would be useful, too. Cultivate those beginners, because today's newbie could be tomorrow's heaviest player or toughest opponent!)
(I wouldn't limit a player's ability to decline challenges, since he may be waiting for a pre-scheduled opponent to show up. Also, I can think of one past opponent who had some serious behavior issues, and another opponent who was incomparably slow, who I would not want to play again. I'm also aware of some pairs of players who only play against each other.)

Just a quick note to say that while I haven't been posting in the last few days, I have been following the various discussions. Regarding the possible side-effects or shortcomings of various ranking methodologies, including those used for T2R or Gang of Four, we are of course aware of what they can be and have plans to address them. It's only a matter of time.

Maybe also a limit to the number of challenges available per player per month, and a limit to how often you can challenge the same player per month (I'd say once) to prevent abuse?

First of all, keep in mind that you can always create a non-ranked game if you'd like to "protect" your ranking.
This being said, and as it was suggested by other beta-testers earlier in this thread, it is likely that the system of Officer promotions and Achievements will become much more important in the mind of players than the pure ELO ranking. Because it's more fun, more visible, and better reflects the player's gaming experience than a raw numerical value.
And we think this is great this way. We even designed some specific Achievements to reward experienced players to guide newbies.
Regarding the question about the user's profile on the web, the answer is definitively YES, we have ambitious plans on this area. Just to name a few: show the officer insignia and title below his avatar in the forum, show his Achievements in his profile, have a full "career" page with his battles, dates of officer promotions, etc., show this kind of stuff in the M44 User Pages, have a special tag to show Achievements ribbons in one's signature, etc, etc. All this will be gradually rolled out during the next months.
It's going to be fun

I want to also say that my three combat ribbons are my proudest accomplishments so far - getting combat ribbons & rewards are going to be a bigger motivator to me than ELO.

We need to get you some more ribbons! I see that you're on West Coast time like I am, so let's figure out a time to get you some more battles against a person!
I'll PM you and see if we can set something up.

Just a question more on this subject: what are the creterias that leads to promotion? What do I have to do to achieve my next promotion?
Quels sont les critères concernant la promotion à un grade supérieur?
