Memoir '44 Battle Map Volume 4: Disaster at Dieppe
|
Mon, 12 July 2010 14:55
|
 |
Here comes the final installment in our first Battle Maps series!
the Disaster at Dieppe expansion features 2 large-scale ready-to-play Overlord Scenarios, 4 Standard Scenarios, 6 half-tracks miniatures and 6 Jeeps miniatures.
Disaster at Dieppe highlights the ill-fated raid on the German-occupied coastal town of Dieppe, code-named, Operation Jubilee; while The capture of Tobruk features Rommel in June of '42 as he relentlessly pushes his Afrika Korps after smashing through the British lines at Gazala in North Africa.
The Battle Map series is designed to encourage team play and accommodates up to 8 players; each map comes ready-to-play with all terrain, obstacles and unit positions pre-printed, making set-up a snap. Battle Map Volume 4 includes 6 half-tracks miniatures, 6 jeeps miniatures and 4 standard scenarios that are playable on a regular Memoir '44 board. The 4 Standard scenarios are: Raid on Barce and Rommel's Right Hook, featuring the new Willys jeeps as long-range patrol cars; and Panzers in the Atlas and Le-Mesnil-Adélée, featuring the new Sd.Kfz. 250 half-tracks. Also included are detailed rules for the long-range patrol cars and half-tracks.
Memoir '44 Battle Map Volume 4 requires one copy of Memoir '44 and the Operation Overlord expansion, or two full copies of Memoir '44. Purists wishing to use all figures of the proper color in the Overlord scenarios will also need two copies of the Mediterranean Theater expansion. It is expected to be available in September in both North America and Europe. Retail price is $18/¤16.

This set is looking very good. 4 standard scenarios is a very cool bonus in addition to the overlord scenarios.
I guess the Dieppe scenario will be hard for the Allies to win.

I am more excited about this than M44 online (as it will probably be out quicker!)
I just wish DOW would not tell us about these new things until nearer the release date. I now have to wait 2 months before I can get it.

That's funny!! Most people complain that DoW doesn't give them any hints about what's being worked on until so close to the release date! It just goes to show that you can't please everyone, I guess!

Immediate Thoughts:
1. Since I collect everything Memoir' 44 - I will get this.
2. Agree that the Battle Maps keep getting better.
3. Like the fact of having beach and desert battle maps.
4, The 4 extra standard scenarios are great.
5. I think this is the first official overlord with British troops. I have Operation Overlord and Mediterrian expansion but still don't have enough British troops for the overlord scenario. This is disappointing.
6. I am a WWII novice - Are halftracks more like armour or infantry. What will their attack range be more like?
7. Any guesses how will the jeeps be used?
8. Is it clear that the new units will be used in the overlord scenarios or just the new standard scenarios?
Love to hear peoples thoughts!

Didn't mean it as a complaint. It's just that now I know about it, I want it NOW
Appetite well and truly whetted
Buddy. A halftrack is an armoured troop transport. Allows troops to move faster, protects them and usually has a large calibre machine gun fitted. The jeep, by contrast, is a soft skinned vehicle, faster than a half track, carries less men than a half track, offers no protection.
I am guessing in the game they will allow greater movement than the current infantry 2 hexes. I am also guessing half track will offer protection from small arms fire (-1 die?). Depends how complicated DoW want to make it?

Would I be correct in assuming that the jeeps and sdkfz 251s would be two of the three missing troop cards? Will the cards also be included?

Actually, the 250 model. This was a smaller version of the 251. The 250 was often used in the recon role while the larger 251 was the main half-track troop carrier. Both types had several variations -- the 251 over 20 and the 250 had a dozen. A very interesting military line of vehicles.
|
Indeed, upon closer inspection it is indeed the 250.
Is it one of the missing troop cards and will they be included?

My thoughts would be
halftrack: moves like armour defends like armour (hits on tank & grenade) attacks like infantry
jeep: moves like armour, defends like infantry, attacks like infantry.
And of course I want this yesterday.
Be still my fast beating heart, you'll just have to wait, and wait, and wait ....

Could this be the Overlord game to be played that DoW hosts each year at GenCon?!?!!? If so, I am glad I have my ticket! My team is ready for action! They often have the new release for sale on the Exhibit floor!

Yes, half tracks and jeeps are two of the "missing" summary cards. Unfortunately they won't be included as stand-alone cards because doing just a couple of cards like these remains prohibitively expensive.
But these cards (and any others not yet released) will be included in the next expansion for the game (sorry can't say which one or when yet).

Thanks. Know you wouldn't be able to provide any additional information. This is more than enough for now. Glad to hear there 'll be more memoir later on and that those cards will one day be released.
PS: Still hoping for a machine gun SWA (fire at 3-2-1 stars hit on infantry).

Jeeps to attack like Cavalry (but without the Armour Overrun)? Or not at all but play a long range 'scouting' role with a 'spotting' die roll bonus?

As I play overlord battle maps at conventions, I can't wait. My next con is in November, so I'll have it by then. I love the battle maps, keep those coming, and with half-tracks and jeeps too!? Thank you DoW for an early Christmas present. I'm always amazed by everything you put out for M44. Anybody from Missouri? Look me up at Command Con '10 in November.

Available starting from September 2010. If you look carefully enough at Brycie35's El Adem scenario and at images on BGG about the scenarios, you may get clues about the half tracks and jeeps!

Ah, Thanks. So jeeps are quite clearly defined in their role in one scenario. Looks interesting. Regarding half-tracks however, I can only glean a small bit of information, enough to make me wonder WTF and to also question any relationship to the aforementioned scenario from the front.

I'm also confused about why we're supposed to look at Brycie35's scenario and what that has to do with the official rules for new minis! Maybe I missed something...

Other than that, I can't discern anything and clearly this difference leads me to believe there is no connection to the El Adem scenario.

I see what you're looking at on the Tobruk map on BGG (I can see the same thing) but I guess I'm confused why we're looking at the El Adem scenario as we speculate about the rules for these new figures...

Yeah, I'm the 'black sheep' again... I saw that it can fire only at 2 hexes , but in the El Adem scenario it can fire at 3 hexes. I didn't tell you, that these are precisely the rulings for half tracks, I said only, that we could get a clue about it.

Ok, finally succeeded in 'decoding' the small letters on BGG, so here are the rules for jeeps:
1. 1-3 figures, per scenario
2. Treated as Infantry, for all purposes
3. Move 0-4 and battle 3-2-1
4. On successful Close Assault, may Take Ground but not Overrun
5. Enemy re-rolls all battle dice that score a hit
6. One hit is confirmed for each re-roll that it is a Grenade; other re-rolls are ignored
P.S. Maybe it was unnecessary to talk about Brycie35's El Adem scenario, because half tracks in it don't have much in common with the half tracks in this expansion...

I've seen jeeps even in the Dieppe scenario, so they aren't present only in the desert as LRDG. I saw these rules for jeeps on BGG on the expansion's page.
